(1.) What is a hero? Would you know one if you saw one? One way to define a
hero, according to the dictionary, is "a person noted for feats of courage or nobility of
purpose". One person who fits this description is the mythological character Hercules.
(2.) Hercules is a hero because he performed many heroic feats while completing twelve
dangerous tasks. (3.) Three of his heroic qualities include bravery, intelligence, and
strength.
(4.) To begin with, (5.) Hercules is an extremely brave man. One of the hardest tasks
he has to perform is killing the Lion of Nemea. After he discovers the lion has skin that cannot be
pierced by arrows, Hercules succeeds by (6.) "choking the beast to death" . He does this with his
own bare hands. Hercules has to be brave in order to do this.
(7.) Next, Hercules also has some intelligence. Though he is not known for being smart, (8.)
Hercules figures out that the easiest way to clean the Aegean stables is to redirect a river
through them. This proves to be the quickest and most effective way to wipe away all of
the dung. This shows that Hercules is no dummy.
Finally, (9.) Hercules has incredible strength. His strength is most visibly shown when he
takes Atlas's place holding up the world. (10.) He steps in and takes the world on his shoulders for a
short time, as Atlas goes to retrieve the golden apples for him. Atlas is supposed to be the strongest
man in the world, yet Hercules is capable of doing the exact same job as he does. Hercules' incredible
strength is apparent in performing this task.
In conclusion, (11.) through completion of his many trials and tasks, Hercules proves that
he is a brave, intelligent, and strong hero. He killed the lion with his bare hands, figured out
solutions to complex problems, and accomplished what no other human could do on his own. There
should be no doubt that Hercules is one of the greatest heroes of all time.
