COACHING AND GAMES DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME 2013-2014 ■ COISTE ÁTHA CLIATH ■ FORBARHTA NA GCLUICHÍ IMPROVING OUR GAMES THROUGH TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT DUBLIN COACH EDUCATION PROGRAMME Coaching is a process that allows learning and growth to occur and ultimately improves the performance of the player and in turn the team. To be a successful Coach requires a knowledge and understanding of the process as well as the variety of styles, skills and techniques that are essential. No doubt there are different approaches needed to coach weather at elite level compared to coaching at grass roots however the core coaching principles of teaching, encouraging and passing on the skills are largely the same. Effective coaching is not just about developing skills and improving performance it is about building good relationships with players, parents and other coaches. The skills of communication therefore are a central component to good coaching. Through coaching we ask players to reflect on their performance, and ask how they could improve; we ask them to think for themselves and come up with solutions for the future. Coaches too should learn to reflect on how they perform as coaches, this is a 2 powerful learning tool. Reflecting on your own practice is now a method of assessment on coach education programmes and forms part of the continuous process of learning. In the past year further developments have taken place in coach education with the launch of the Digital Online Education System (DOES) This Learning & Development Community Portal aims to support the role of those actively promoting Gaelic Games both within the Association and across the educational sector. The website, found at learning.gaa.ie, will be used to publish e-learning content and resources from the Association’s Coach, Referee, Player and Administrator Development Programmes, as well as providing an opportunity for registered users to share and learn from one another. This booklet details the Dublin County Board Coach Education Programme for the coming academic year 2013/14. It is designed to support all coaches working at child youth and adult level through specifically planned courses and workshops incorporating recognised principles of best practice in the field of coaching. The Games Development programme for this year provides the best possible supports in relation to Coach Education and CPD workshops and courses covering a wide variety of training. COACHING & GAMES DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME 2013-2014 Planning for Success - Young Gaelic Player Pathway The purpose of the player pathway initiative is to help guide coaches, managers, teachers and parents who play an active role in the development of young gaelic footballers and hurlers. The player pathway is a systematic approach adopted by Dublin G.A.A. to maximize player potential and increase the enjoyment of all our players. It provides a framework for the development of skills, physical focus and game sense capacities that coaches can follow stage by stage. There are five key age groups or stages in the pathway outlined which have detailed player characteristics and describe the practical elements that must be coached during these ages. High Performance workshops: A number of high performance workshops will be delivered again this year which are designed to help managers and coaches make a greater impact on their teams training and general performance. Website: Stage Age (Approx.) Emphasis Learning to master the ball 4-6 years Should be about fun and participation with key emphasis on physical literacy and core movement skills with the ball Learning to use the ball well 7-9 years Major skills learning phase where all the basic skills in football and hurling are learned Learning to play together 10-12 years Emphasis on understanding how to play and work together as a team Learning about positions 13-15 years The principles of play and applying good game sense increase Learning to perform 16-18 years Combining all aspects of performance including, decision making, higher physical demands of the game and coping with competition The games development website now has some new features, our online shop with over 10 different coaching resources including books, plans and DvDs. Information on all of the courses and workshops can be found there too at www.dublingaagamesdevelopment.ie.
