only downside with this phone is that

4. Xiaomi Mi 3
5. HTC Desire 610
6. ASUS ZenFone 6
he Xiaomi Mi 3 was officially sold
in Malaysia just a couple of
months ago, but the phone has
already taken the country by storm. At
RM889, it’s considered to be the most
affordable smartphone with specs that
reach well into the premium section. It’s
powered by a 2.3GHz Snapdragon 800,
2GB of RAM and even has a 13MP camera
for some ultra-sharp images. To top it off,
it supports the latest Android 4.4 (KitKat)
OS. The only drawback of this phone is its
lack of 4G LTE connectivity.
s one of the few mid-range
smartphones to use a nanoSIM
card configuration, the HTC Desire
610 has some rather impressive specs. It
has 4G LTE connectivity and an
expandable microSD card slot that
supports up to 128GB of additional
storage. It’s also got a 1.2GHz quad-core
Snapdragon 400 processor and 1GB of
RAM, so it’s not a slouch either. Last but
not least, it runs on HTC’s Sense UI, on top
of the latest Android 4.4 (KitKat) OS.
Unfortunately, this phone does not have
Full HD resolution.
f you’re looking for a smartphone
that runs on a processor other
than Qualcomm’s, then the ASUS
ZenFone 6 may just be the phone for you.
It’s one of the few Android smartphones
that makes use of Intel’s Atom Z2580
dual-core processor. Apart from that, it
has 2GB of RAM and dual-SIM slots. It also
runs on the Zen UI, which is based on
Android’s 4.3 (Jelly Bean) OS, and will be
upgradable to the latest Android 4.4
(KitKat) OS.

°Similar, Yet Different
The Difference Between Original and
Authorized Products
hen buying a new mobile
phone, we often hear the
terms AP and Original. In
general, AP sets are cheaper and
are usually talked about in a
hushed tone, but what do the
terms AP and Original actually
mean?
Authorized Products,
better known as AP, are
genuine products made by the
manufacturer. They are not copies
nor are they refurbished sets.
What makes them different is
that they are not distributed by
authorized distributors.
Because AP sets are not
distributed by authorized
distributors, retailers are able to
purchase them at a lower price,
which in turn lets the retailers sell
them at cheaper prices. We’re
looking at pricing that’s roughly 10
to 30 percent cheaper than that
of an Original set.
W
3
4
5
VIBES • AUG – OCT 2014
6
However, it’s important to
understand that AP phones
do not come with an official
warranty, which means that
repairing an AP phone could be
a hassle and cost more in the
long run. They also may come
from a different region, where
the phone’s frequencies may be
different and some features may
be locked.
Identifying which phones are
Original and which ones are AP
is simple and takes only a little
know-how:
• The first way is to check if your
SIM card works with the phone.
Some phones are locked and will
only function with SIM cards from
specific carriers and/or countries.
• The warranty is provided from
the seller. If the shop closes down,
there’s no way to claim warranty.
ORI
VS.
• An AP phone generally costs
less than an Original set.
• Repair services will be provided
by third party service centers,
instead of from the manufacturer.
• The software of the phone may
or may not be updated.
AP
If there’s a holographic sticker
from an authorized distributor
(e.g. Zitron, Ingram Micro, etc.).
• Finally, you can dial *#60# on
the phone. A 15-digit number –
the phone’s IMEI number – will
appear. If this number matches
the box it came with, it’s an
Original set.
• Remove the back cover of the
phone and its battery (if possible).
