Cabinets
Industry Study with Forecasts for 2018 & 2023
Demand for cabinets in the US will be spurred by a strong rebound in residential building
construction and by design trends that promote the use of more cabinets.
US demand to reach $16
billion annually by 2018
US demand for cabinets is forecast to
rise 6.6 percent annually to $16.0 billion
in 2018, driven by a strong rebound in
residential building construction. Kitchens and bathrooms will continue to claim
a large share of square footage in new
housing, boosting demand for cabinets
as these rooms are the areas of a home
where cabinets are most often installed.
Builders will install more cabinets in
these rooms -- such as by adding
cabinets in kitchen islands or his-and-her
bathroom vanities -- to provide aesthetically pleasing storage solutions. Further
gains will be spurred by an acceleration
in residential improvement and repair
spending.
Design trends to aid rapid
gains for kitchen cabinets
Among cabinet types, kitchen cabinets,
which accounted for 81 percent of total
demand in 2013, are expected to post
the most rapid growth through 2018. In
addition to the rebound in residential
building construction, advances will be
spurred by design trends that call for
homes to have larger kitchens with such
features as islands and breakfast bars.
These kitchens are often equipped with
more and larger cabinets to provide
ample storage space. Many of these
cabinets will offer value-added amenities
that enhance convenience, such as pullout shelves, storage racks, easy-to-open
doors and light-emitting diode lighting.
Kitchen
($16 billion, 2018)
Bathroom
Other
Stock cabinets accounted for the largest
share of kitchen cabinet demand in 2013.
These cabinets see widespread use due
to their low cost, ready availability, and
ease of installation. Stock cabinets will
remain the leading cabinet type installed
in kitchens in 2018; however, demand for
custom and semicustom cabinets will
rise faster going forward.
Demand gains for bathroom cabinets will
be spurred by design trends that call for
multiple bathrooms. While smaller in
size than kitchens, bathrooms feature
cabinets -- such as medicine chests or
vanities -- that provide storage space for
personal items and cleaning supplies.
Demand for other cabinets such as home
office, home theater, and garage cabinets will be supported by interest in them

as engaging storage alternatives to open
shelving and free-standing furnishings.
Nonresidential market to
hold solid growth prospects
Demand for cabinets in the nonresidential market will be fueled by solid growth
in office, commercial, and institutional
construction expenditures. Hotels, office
buildings, and health care facilities use
cabinets to provide secure yet attractive
storage solutions. Also, a more favorable
economic outlook will support consumer
spending, spurring demand for store fixture cabinets. The small nonconstruction
market for cabinets will be boosted by
rebounding production of recreational
boats, business jets, and RVs.

Advances will also be spurred by continuing interest in having
more and larger cabinets -- especially in kitchens -- to increase storage
space. Builders and homeowners install additional cabinetry to provide
more storage space for kitchen equipment, cookware, crockery, and other
items. Not only are these cabinets larger in size but many consumers opt
for cabinets with amenities that improve convenience, such as pull-out
shelves, storage racks, and soft-touch doors that are easy to open and
close. Cabinets with these features can be sold at higher price points
than standard models, boosting value gains. Style trends that call for
multiple bathrooms in houses will also support demand for cabinets.
While there is not as much space for cabinetry in bathrooms as there is
in kitchens, most bathrooms often feature a medicine chest for storing
medications and personal items or vanities for cleaning supplies and
other items. As more bathrooms are installed in houses, unit and value
demand for cabinets will increase.
The residential market accounted for 78 percent of cabinet demand
in 2013. While a growth from the level seen in 2008, residental builders
