Planned Parenthood Mid-Hudson Valley Annual Report 2013 MISSION: Planned Parenthood Mid-Hudson Valley empowers individuals to make independent, informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive lives by providing access to high quality, evidence-based and medically sound health care and educational services, and by promoting and advocating for public policies to make those services available to all. Planned Parenthood Mid-Hudson Valley’s services allow each individual to manage his or her fertility regardless of income, marital status, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, national origin or residence. 178 Church Street Poughkeepsie, NY 12601 845.471.1530 www.ppmhv.org 02 04 08 10 13 14 Message from Our Chair & President 10 Highlights of the Year Education & Outreach Medical/Patient Services Data Financial Data Donor List Message from Our Ruth-Ellen Blodgett, President and CEO; Ellie Charwat; Cecile Richards, President, Planned Parenthood Federation of America and Martin Charwat, Board Member Moving Forward, No Matter What. In 2013, we provided services to 13,300 patients through 23,153 visits. We reached an additional 23,728 individuals through our education and outreach programs. In addition, we guided many of our clients through the process of accessing health insurance through the provision of the Affordable Care Act. For many, this is the first time they have had such insurance. But what sets Planned Parenthood apart from most health care providers is the dedication and generosity of our supporters. Through a substantial grant from a loyal family foundation, we were able to reach hundreds of families in the African American and Hispanic communities in the mid-Hudson Valley. Both Latina and African American women have significant disparities in health outcomes such as mortality rates for cervical and breast cancers. This grant resulted in a 500 percent icrease in women from these communities seeking screening and preventive services from PPMHV for the very first time. Additionally, a family of longtime donors established a fund to provide long-acting reversible contraceptives, such as IUDs, post-abortion for women who cannot afford them. Long-acting reversible contraceptives are the most effective method to prevent an unplanned pregnancy. Thanks to these donors, many women in the mid-Hudson Valley now have the opportunity to ensure full control over their future reproductive choices. We’re here for the women and families in our community because of your support and dedicated belief in our mission. I cannot thank you enough for what you do—whether through charitable support, patient escorting, hosting an event or writing letters to the editor. We appreciate your partnership in making sure women, men and young people can get the care and information they need to be healthy and reach their potential. Thank you for standing with Planned Parenthood. Most Sincerely, Blake Rider Chairperson Planned Parenthood Mid-Hudson Valley 2 Annual Report 2013 Ruth-Ellen Blodgett President/CEO Planned Parenthood Mid-Hudson Valley Planned Parenthood Mid-Hudson Valley Board of Directors 2013-2014 Chair Blake Rider Vice Chair Fred Cook Treasurer Helen Ullrich Secretary Shannon Wong Members Martin Charwat Leah Feldman Julia Goings-Perrot Ira Hochman Cathie Hunter Stephen Katz Kellyann Kostyal-Larrier Cynthia Lowe Irwin Rosenthal Barbara Sarah Mimi Tannen Cary Fowler; Amy Goldman Fowler, Co-Chair and Rob Dyson, Co-Chair, 80th Anniversary Soirée. Everyone chipped in $5 each and got several pies. A PPMHV Medical Assistant took a slice of pizza and cup of water for a 14-year-old patient who looked very hungry. Later, she brought her another slice. On her lunch break, she did not take any pizza and was busy working. It turns out that she felt she had taken her share and given it away, so she wasn’t going to have lunch that day. Of course, there was plenty and we all chided her for not eating! But this demonstrates the dedication our staff has for all who need us. “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” ~Winston Churchill 2013 Financials 2013 WE CARE ABOUT OUR PATIENTS Medical Services 2013 PATIENT DEMOGRAPHICS Revenue Emergency Contraception Patient Fees $4,633,764 Contributions $790,845 Government Grants Pap Tests $2,635,539 Other $356,362 Total Revenue $8,416,510 Expenses Breast Exams/Care STI/STD Testing & Treatment Patient Services $5,553,231 Management & General $1,798,253 Education & Outreach $895,513 Public Policy & Advocacy $222,257 Fundraising $219,026 Total Expenses $8,688,280 Expenses 2013 WE CARE ABOUT OUR PATIENTS STI/STD Testing & Treatment 17,757 Emergency Contraception Kits 2,863 Pap Tests 3,185 Education & Outreach 10% Revenue Management & General 21% Other 4% Breast Exams/Breast Care 4,514 Total Patients 13,287 Total Patient Visits 20,014 Abortion Services Total Visits 3,139 23,153 12 Annual Report 2013 Patient Services 64% Patient Fees 55% Government Grants 31% Patient Fees 55% Fundraising 2% 55% Public Policy & Advocacy 3% Contributions 10% 55% 13 Anne Conroy and Phebe Banta, Award recipient of the Lucy Cohan Humanitarian Award Donor List Private donations are essential—for keeping our doors open to all in need, for developing creative and innovative education programs, for furthering preventive reproductive health care.
