Message from the Chairman and President For example: although Acadia lost $390,000 from its 2013 operations budget due to sequestration, the park was able to move ahead with important projects for natural resource protection (see page 3) and youth engagement (page 5). Projects like these—like efforts to control potentially devastating invasive plant species in the park—can’t wait for a better funding cycle a few years down the road. They need to be aggressive now in order to succeed, and Friends of Acadia’s flexibility and committed donors allowed Acadia to move forward instead of losing ground. Similarly, maintenance crews for Acadia’s historic trails and carriage roads could rest assured that essential upkeep wouldn’t be skipped, thanks to conservation grants and thousands of hours of volunteer and Youth Conservation Corps labor (page 10) that Friends of Acadia provided last year and every year. Friends of Acadia’s efforts in 2013 weren’t all about forestalling disaster; we’re equally proud of forward-looking work to ensure a better future for this magnificent place. Work like the launch of the Acadia Centennial Task Force (page 9), which aims to generate a yearlong, community-powered, and energy-building celebration of Acadia’s 100th anniversary in 2016, or Friends of Acadia’s advocacy efforts (page 10) that encourage federal policies to ensure a stronger national park system for the next hundred years. And while we’re asking Congress to get the park system’s fiscal house in order, we’re glad to report that Friends of Acadia’s own house is in good shape, finishing 2013 with a positive operating budget and an all-time high for membership—recording 3,725 members by the end of the year! That’s almost four thousand individuals, families, and businesses who love Acadia National Park and trust Friends of Acadia to use their membership dollars to make a real and lasting difference for this magnificent place. Thank you for your confidence and your support. As we write this, it is late spring in Acadia and the forested slopes of Champlain, Beech, and all Acadia’s mountains are clothed in a delicate gauze of reds and greens reaching down to fringe Acadia’s pink granite shores. May you experience the best of times—right here, right now—while enjoying the inspiration of Acadia this year. Edward L. Samek, Chairman of the Board Storm surf at Otter Cliffs David MacDonald, President and CEO 1 “A more Wild Acadia will not only better protect the park today, but enable the park to be resilient to the global changes that it will face in the future.” Former Acadia National Park Chief of Resources David Manski A granite boulder once visible at the bottom of a lake can no longer be seen from the surface. A snowshoe hare tries to pass by a familiar wetland but can’t push through the undergrowth. A brook trout seeks a cool stream to lay its eggs but instead finds a warm and silty pool. A couple bring their young child on a hike they themselves loved as children, but are dismayed to find a washed-out trail and the summit bare of the delicate alpine vegetation they remember. Ensuring a Wild Acadia In Acadia National Park, now approaching 100 years old, all these situations are possible as changes in the Earth’s climate and changes in human activity in and around the park put subtle but unremitting pressures on Acadia’s natural resources. In 2013, Acadia National Park and Friends of Acadia established Wild Acadia, a set of restoration, outreach, and research initiatives designed to establish a more intact and resilient natural landscape in Acadia, to help withstand new environmental challenges today and throughout Acadia’s next hundred years. One of the centerpieces of Wild Acadia’s inaugural year was a multi-pronged attack on invasive plant species in and around the park. Some exotic plants, if left unchecked, will take over a landscape—wiping out native flora and with them the complex community of life dependent on those native plants. Acadia’s close proximity to developed sites and private homes throughout its history makes invasive ornamental plants a particular problem. Through an exciting new partnership with Canon U.S.A., Friends of Acadia supported the expansion of Acadia National Park’s exotic plant management team. The team treated more than 97 acres and surveyed an additional 305 acres for species like oriental bittersweet, bush honeysuckle, glossy buckthorn, and garlic mustard—documenting the plants removed, number of acres restored, and methods of management. The team updated the exotic plant management plans for all 27 major invasive plant species and leveraged 200 volunteer hours to make possible the hand-pulling of invasive plants on 17 acres of park land. Canon has renewed its support for 2014 so this important work can continue. In parallel with this effort, a grant from Nature Valley via the National Parks Conservation Association supported invasive plant management work outside Acadia’s boundary, coordinating community volunteers to remove invasive species from private lands in Manset, Southwest Harbor, Seal Harbor, and Bar Harbor; documenting invasive plant colonies in Mount Desert Island communities; and holding public outreach events about invasive plant species. Volunteers help to clear away invasive Japanese knotweed along the Great Meadow Loop. To develop a closer relationship with one or more national parks as we grow—to explore and relax in a magnificent natural playground, to discover a tide pool or a mountain with a park ranger, to live for a time in the shadow of one of America’s most beautiful places—can have a positive impact on our entire lives in many ways. But what about children who live far away from national parks and don’t have the resources for a regular pilgrimage? How will they grow up feeling attached to our national parks and public lands? Bringing Acadia to Kids Nationwide One way is through the Teacher-Ranger-Teacher (TRT) program at Acadia National Park. Teachers from Maine and across the country spend six weeks in Acadia during their summer vacation, learning about park resources, working with park education and interpretive staff, and developing unique lesson plans they can bring into their home classrooms. It’s a highly effective program, bringing the park experience—and the teacher’s own excitement—to schoolchildren near and far. Unfortunately, in this time of tight budgets it’s a program that is being cut back at national parks around the country. Fortunately, support from a private donor allowed Friends of Acadia to fund seven TRTs at Acadia in 2013. They represented communities as near as Eastbrook, Maine and as far as Colorado Springs, Colorado, teaching in grades from pre-kindergarten to high school and subject matter from computer science to chemistry to the arts. While at Acadia, the TRTs led activities at Family Fun Day, participated in the BioBlitz at Schoodic, and assisted with the Sand Beach “Super Sand Sleuths” and other interpretive programs. The lesson plans they wrote—on making nature-based documentary films with students, incorporating field-based data from Acadia into climate change studies, and combining park field visits with classroom art and science activities—were distributed to other TRTs nationwide. After the TRTs returned to their home schools in the fall, they shared their Acadia experience with their students and, with FOA funding, brought their students (and in one case, their whole school) on a field trip to Acadia or another park. Friends of Acadia will be able to continue funding for the expanded TRT program in 2014. The original donor’s continued enthusiasm helped inspire others to support the program through the 2013 FOA Benefit Auction, and eight TRTs are already looking forward to their summer in Acadia. But as of December 2013 “landowner” has been crossed off that list. When FOA purchased an option on a 369-acre property in Trenton in 2004, it was to move forward the last missing piece of the original Island Explorer vision: an off-island welcome center, transit facility, and administrative/maintenance building to give the Island Explorer a permanent home and encourage more car-free visits to Acadia National Park. Although partners—including the National Park Service, Maine Department of Transportation, Downeast Transportation, and the MDI League of Towns—were behind the project and worked together to identify the best location, only Friends of Acadia had the flexibility and donor support to buy the entire parcel when it came on the market. Stewarding Acadia’s Gateway In the following decade, Friends of Acadia pieced together a jigsaw puzzle of plans, partnerships, permits, and projects in order to be good stewards of this large tract of forest and wetland in the heart of Trenton. It started with fundraising efforts to acquire the property, leveraging a challenge grant from the Butler Conservation Fund to attract additional gifts from Mr. T.A. Cox, the Maren Foundation, the Shelby Cullom Davis Foundation, and many others. The Maine DOT immediately purchased the acreage needed for the Gateway Center, and Friends of Acadia continued as an active partner throughout the center’s first phase, including helping to plan the building’s floor plan and get LEED certification. FOA purchased the office equipment and furniture, and the Island Explorer’s maintenance and administration facility—a LEED-Gold certified building—was inaugurated in spring of 2012. Meanwhile, FOA began gathering interest and partners to find a meaningful use for the remaining 217 acres. With the help of motivated Trenton residents, FOA began planning a walking trail through the heart of the property. The group scouted routes, developed trail use guidelines, secured permits, raised money, installed interpretive signs, and constructed a 1.8-mile loop trail with major funding from the Davis Conservation Fund, Nature Valley, the National Parks Conservation Association, and Yawkey Foundation. The trail was inaugurated in spring of 2013, providing Trenton residents and visitors with a lovely place to walk, through diverse woodlands to the heath that runs through Trenton’s interior. The final piece of the puzzle was to ensure long-term conservation and stewardship of the trail and property. The portion of the Gateway Center land where the trail originates had already been preserved through wetland mitigation covenants, and FOA wanted to ensure that the “back two hundred” also would not be developed. In December 2013 Friends of Acadia donated a conservation easement and stewardship fund to Maine Coast Heritage Trust, already a trusted FOA partner; and several days later, FOA donated the land to the Town of Trenton. Trenton’s recreation committee will manage the Trenton Community Trail with assistance from Friends of Acadia as needed. The property will be open for public use in perpetuity as the “Trenton Community Forest.” April Mims from the National Parks Conservation Association (left) and FOA president David MacDonald cut the ribbon to inaugurate the Trenton Community Trail. Facing page: Pink lady’s slippers, a rare native orchid, abound along the Trenton Community Trail. 7 Accomplishments PROTECTING SCHOODIC The latest chapter in the story of Schoodic Woods is a very happy one for this 1,400 acre property abutting Acadia National Park. In the fall of 2013, landowner Schoodic Woods LLC donated a conservation easement on the land that will restrict future development and timber harvesting and sets the stage for the construction of a campground and a network of paths linking to the park. In addition, the easement will assure protection of more than a mile of spectacular shoreline as well as critical wildlife habitat, and eventually allow for public access on the land. The easement was secured through an option purchased by Maine Coast Heritage Trust with major funding from Friends of Acadia. FOA has long been a partner in efforts to protect this vital landscape, once threatened with clear-cutting and other development that would have fundamentally altered the remote feel of Acadia’s mainland district. The easement and associated development plan have been hailed by both park officials and Schoodic residents as a potential boon to Acadia National Park visitors and the local communities. MONITORING JORDAN POND With support from Canon U.S.A.’s Wild Acadia partnership, Friends of Acadia hired a water-quality scientist and purchased equipment to allow Acadia National Park to establish an advanced water-quality monitoring program at Jordan Pond, Maine’s clearest lake. More than 7,700 waterquality measurements were taken July through September of 2013, compared with 219 measurements taken in the previous 71 years. The detailed information will to enable park managers to make better decisions about lake protection measures. A VOICE FOR ACADIA In July 2013, Friends of Acadia president David MacDonald testified before the full US Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, speaking about the critical need for adequate federal funding for national parks and about the many positive impacts the parks offer the US economy and the American people. In particular, MacDonald explained that private individuals have a strong desire to contribute toward Acadia’s well-being, but their enthusiasm for giving back decreases when they feel the federal government is not meeting its responsibility to fund the parks. “Our donors are not inspired to invest if the government is disinvesting,” he said. He also spoke to Acadia National Park’s great appreciation for volunteers working in the park. ACADIA’S CENTENNIAL: CELEBRATE OUR PAST, INSPIRE OUR FUTURE Friends of Acadia and Acadia National Park launched the Acadia Centennial Task Force in 2013 to encourage community support and celebration of Acadia’s centennial in 2016. The Task Force includes a mix of FOA board members and staff, park staff, and community members. Initial accomplishments included crafting the centennial slogan, launching a national logo contest, and forming working groups on such topics as marketing, licensing of the centennial logo, and how to involve the many organizations, professional communities, and businesses that have connections to Acadia. In October, the Centennial Task Force rolled these ideas out to an initial group of those entities, the “Acadia Centennial Partners” who have committed to participate in a yearlong celebration in 2016 to honor the history of Acadia’s founding and inspire the next century of park stewardship. Friends of Acadia was able to direct the private donation toward urgent work on the upper portion of the trail and the Acadia Youth Conservation Corps helped park crews with the project, which resulted in a beautiful stretch of curving, pink-granite-lined tread paralleling Deer Brook. Work will continue on the lower portion of the trail as FOA and the Park Service identify additional funding. THE IMPORTANCE OF CULVERTS As part of the Wild Acadia initiative, the park is working to replace undersized culverts in Acadia’s road systems that have been causing flooding, washouts, and a variety of hurdles for spawning brook trout and other native fish. In September, with funding from Friends of Acadia, park maintenance staff replaced one such culvert on the east side of Eagle Lake, gaining a fish-friendly flat bottom and a diameter that will accommodate even the largest storms. Hilary Krieger, employed by FOA as the park’s environmental compliance intern, gained significant experience managing the project from start to finish. A RECORD QUEST A record 198 teams signed on to the 2013 Acadia Trail Quest, representing families and groups from 15 states plus several foreign countries, as well as dozens of towns from the Acadia region and throughout the state of Maine. Equipped with a list of trails and challenges, a park pass, and a trail map, teams were challenged to complete 12 hikes on Acadia’s historic trails and FOA’s village connector trails. Kids and parents alike had what one team called “an amazing experience.” 10 EVALUATING INNOVATIONS In the Acadia Youth Tech Team’s third successful year, an exciting new step was the hiring of evaluation fellow Sara Greller, who worked with team members to test the effectiveness of AYTT innovations in ranger-led programs such as “Stars Over Sand Beach,” “Touch Tank Talk,” and the Peregrine Falcon Program, asking whether they enhance the visitor experience and whether they help rangers to deliver the programs. In addition to establishing specific protocols as well as an evaluative mindset within the team, Greller was able to complete some initial analysis, which will continue in 2014. BETTER COMMUNICATIONS MAKE BETTER FRIENDS Friends of Acadia’s communications took several leaps forward in 2013, with the launch of a fully redesigned website—including improved online donation tools, the Cobblestones blog, online event registration, tools and information for FOA members and Acadia visitors, and much more; the expansion of the Friends of Acadia Journal and addition of several new features including the “Where in Acadia?” photo puzzle and “Why I’m a Friend of Acadia” essay series; the first full year of the E-News, our monthly email newsletter; and the hiring of a seasonal communications assistant to add digital video to our outreach toolkit. Response has been very positive, with members feeling more engaged and staff more able to reach out in a timely and effective manner. Dorr Society recognizes members and friends who have documented provisions for Friends of Acadia in their estate plans. The Dorr Society honors George Bucknam Dorr, whose dedication to preserving Mount Desert Island helped create Acadia National Park. Each year Friends of Acadia hosts a special appreciation event for the Dorr Society. In late July, members boarded the Bar Harbor Whale Watch’s Miss Samantha bound for the Hop, an islet just a “hop, skip, and a jump” from Long Porcupine Island. On the pebble beach that connects the two at low tide, Acadia’s cultural resources manager Becky Cole-Will presented a short history of Native American life on the park’s outer islands. After some relaxed exploration, guests reboarded the Miss Samantha for a picnic lunch and field notes by naturalist Zack Klyver, who pointed out harbor porpoises, seals, an immature eagle in its nest, and a natural stone arch on the cliffs of Long Porcupine. If you have made provisions for Friends of Acadia in your estate plans or would like information about joining the George B. Dorr Society, please contact Lisa Horsch Clark, director of development and donor relations, at 207-288-3340 or lisahorsch@friendsofacadia.org Anonymous (7) Brenda Beckett and Howie Motenko Bob Bell Frances Bodell Kathleen and Charles Bonneau Shirley Boyd Polly Chandler and Greg Chanis The Mary M. and Dwight E. Howie Motenko and Brenda Beckett exemplified this in 2013, creating an adventurous community to “paint” Acadia’s carriage road bridges with flashlights while Howie took striking nighttime photographs of the iconic structures. Howie and Brenda then organized the final images into an exhibit at the Northeast Harbor Public Library, and donated the proceeds from sales to FOA. In addition to the donation, their project created terrific “buzz” and good will in the community and brought more than 150 people outside to experience Acadia at night in wintertime—building connections with the park that won’t soon be forgotten. Fifteen-year-old Aaron Yeiser uses birch bark, sticks, and other natural materials to make remarkable scale models of the antique cars—many of which were state-of-the-art back when Acadia National Park was created—on display at the Seal Cove Auto Museum. For the past several years, Aaron has given Friends of Acadia half the income from each model he sells (they’re available for $10 each at the museum). 19 We thank Trailblazer donors who have chosen to contribute monthly via credit card or direct deposit. To become a Trailblazer, call Friends of Acadia at 207-288-3340. We make every attempt to provide an accurate listing of donors and volunteers. If we have omitted your name or if other changes should be made, please contact us and we will correct your record immediately.
