Behind the colorful airplanes and equally colorful and fun staff, Southwest has a rich history and a vibrant future. Founded in the early 1970’s, Southwest initially served three markets: Dallas, San Antonio, and Houston. By 2003 Southwest had risen to the top of the monthly domestic originating passenger rankings. Southwest operates more than 3,100 flights a day coast-to-coast in 68 cities, with new service to Panama City Beach, Florida beginning in March of 2010. Southwest is the largest U.S. carrier based on passengers carried as of June 2009. As a result, over 100 million Customers each year are exposed to Southwest’s commitment to Positively Outrageous Customer Service. The efforts of Southwest’s 35,000+ Employees generated 2009 operating revenues of $10.4 billion and net income for 2009 of $99M. The performance marked the company’s 37th consecutive year of profitability. Innovation has been a constant component of Southwest’s success. Southwest was the first airline whose frequent flyer program gave credit for the number of trips taken and not the number of miles flown. Southwest also pioneered senior discounts, Fun Fares, Fun Packs, a same-day air freight delivery service, ticketless travel, and many other unique programs. At Southwest Airlines, Diversity is more than a word; it is an expression of our operations in every way. A diverse workforce keeps Southwest strong and innovative, and we seek to mirror the communities we serve. Our People are our greatest strength, and they are an amazing group of Employees from different backgrounds and countries. This means more richness in the diversity of ideas, knowledge, and actions, which has made us the only consistently profitable airline in the world and which helped create the powerful corporate Culture for which we are known.
