Taking a hands-on approach, students will become skilled in the use of the Windows operating system, and Microsoft Office 2010. These competencies include the operations of word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software. All learning will be in a lab environment where students will directly apply instructions using individual computers. Course Objectives: After completing this course, the student will be able to: 1. Identify the parts (hardware) of the computer. 2. Understand Windows and manipulate windows. 3. Manipulate files and folders in a Windows environment. 4. Create and format a document in MS Word 2010. 5. Insert bullets, numbers, and symbols in MS Word 2010. 6. Add borders and shading to text in MS Word 2010. 7. Copy, cut, and paste text within all software programs. 8. Manipulate margins, page orientation, and views within all software programs. 9. Utilize WordArt, Clip Art, and the Drawing toolbar within Word 2010. 10. Save and Open files within all software programs. 11. Identify key components of each software program’s user interface. Copy formulas, use various number styles, and formatting techniques in MS Excel 2010. Hide and unhide columns and rows; move and copy cells within MS Excel 2010. Format font, size, and color of text in MS Word and Excel 2010. Utilize various statistical formulas within a spreadsheet. Create Charts within Excel 2010. Create a field, record, and table in MS Access 2010. Manipulate tables by adding, deleting, and sorting records. Create relationships between two tables. Create forms and reports within Access 2010 utilizing the Wizard functions. Query tables for specific information. Create a professional presentation utilizing MS PowerPoint 2010. COURSE REQUIREMENTS Students will be required to: 1. Prepare for each session, take notes, cooperate in the teaching/learning process, and complete assignments. 2. Read textbook assignments as scheduled 3. Complete in-class assignments 4. Complete exams, quizzes, and homework assignments on time If a class is missed, it is the responsibility of the student to contact the instructor, and complete, and submit assignments to the instructor by the next class session. If the assignments are not handed in by the next class session, a zero will be recorded for the assignment. There will be no make ups for examinations unless approved in advance by the instructor. Only one make up exam per student, per semester is allowed. We cover an abundance of material in class and your success depends to a great extent on your attending every class and on your being prepared for class. The decision to not attend class rest entirely with you, the student. If a class is missed, the student is: Responsible for all material covered in class Expected to be familiar with the material covered in the missed class and therefore able to follow the material covered in subsequent classes that build on the material covered in the missed class Expected to turn in the homework due on the date of the missed class, on time. Being absent from class does not eliminate the need to complete and turn in homework on the assigned due date There are no “excused” absences. Not attending a class for any reason will be recorded as an absence. Attendance is taken each class; each student’s attendance record becomes part of the official academic record. BCA 120-03 Syllabus Page 2 Arriving to class on time and remaining in class for the entire class is also necessary for an optimal learning experience. Students may incur point penalties for consistent late arrivals and/or leaving class prior to the completion of the class. Penalty assessments are at the discretion of the instructor and are deducted from the final grade at the end of the semester. A maximum of 5 points will be deducted. Consistent and repeated late arrivals/early departures from class may be considered inappropriate/disruptive conduct, and may be referred to the CMCC disciplinary staff for disposition. Use of Cell Phones in Class: Cell phones are not to be used in class and texting in class is not permitted. The Instructor reserves the right to confiscate a phone for the duration of the class if phone use continues after one warning. Children in Class: Children are not permitted in the classroom.
