“Stealing Fire: Prometheus in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein” a CLASSICS GRADUATE STUDENT COLLOQUIUM by Marissa Gurtler Friday, April 19 1:30 p.m. LSB 246 In Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus, both Victor Frankenstein and his Monster are representations of Prometheus. Frankenstein literally steals fire to create his Monster, while the Monster steals knowledge. Mary Shelley's treatment of the Promethean myth also extends to Pandora, when Frankenstein refuses to create a female companion for his Monster, and the related account of Races/Ages of Man, as the Monster realizes his disconnection from mankind.
