ABOUT VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH UNIVERSITY
As one of only 28 public universities with academic medical centers to be designated by the
Carnegie Foundation as a Community Engaged Institution with very high research activity,
Virginia Commonwealth University has cemented its reputation as one of the nation’s top 50
public research universities.
Located in Richmond, Va., VCU boasts more than $248 million in funded research, as well as 33
graduate programs ranked nationally by U.S. News & World Report. VCU offers comprehensive
undergraduate, master’s, doctoral and first-professional programs — enrolling more than
31,000 students — and encompasses one of the largest academic health centers in the U.S.
VCU and the VCU Health System have been honored with more than a decade of national
recognition by U.S. News & World Report, including being ranked a No. 1 hospital in Virginia for
the past two years. The university and its medical center also regularly receive recognition by
local, regional and national guides to the best hospitals, best doctors and best places to work,
and professional societies and journals.
Through collaborations with local businesses and
industry and government agencies, VCU has sparked a
surge of economic development for the region. For its
record of successful university-community
partnerships, VCU received the Carnegie Foundation’s
community-engaged designation and earned a spot, for
the seventh consecutive year, on the U.S. President’s
Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.
