May 2013 In this issue….Winter Warmers ! Letter from the CEO, Mr Andrew Lovell Thank you letters: Strathyre Home for Girls Vele Secondary School Tsepo Trust Award– Diamond Arrow 2013 Johannesburg-Durban Soccer Match Valentine’s Day Celebration CANSA Shavathon Meet Your Wellness Ambassadors Golf Days AFCON Final Soccer Match BDE Awards CSI projects: Tembisa Hospital Lakehaven Children’s Home Rekopane Centre Kopanong Welfare Letter From The CEO Following on from this, we again had very successful golf days in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Port Elizabeth. The support we got from our customers is testament to the loyalty of same to our business and of course to this crazy game of golf that many of us so enjoy! Andrew Lovell, CEO Hi there to all our Purple Family It has been a while since our last communiqué and much water has passed under the bridge! Winter is now upon us and has crept in almost unnoticed after an extended summer! Fortunately our winters are short and generally kinder than those in other parts of the world. Having said this, I am sure all Southern Africans much prefer the warmth that summer brings and will no doubt share in wishing winter away! As to be expected, the past months have not been ―boring‖ and will now reflect on some of the highlights of same Perhaps one of the more significant highlights over the last period has been the ―Diamond Arrow Award‖ by PMR for 2012. Our business in Zambia was again placed first ahead of all other Courier and Express Companies in Zambia! Well done to the team there and we look forward to them retaining this award in 2013! Our primary marketing event remains to be our involvement in the Nedbank Golf Challenge held annually at Sun City on the first weekend of December. Our marketing team again outdid themselves and they were showered in praises from our customers, guests and employees who clearly had a good time. This year we enjoyed the company of Jerry Leary (Regional President of FedEx EMEA), David Binks (Senior VP of Operations FedEx EMEA) and Mike Higley (Managing Director of FedEx International Operations). Their very presence here reaffirmed FedEx’s commitment to our business and the continent of Africa as a whole! We as a business realize the importance of giving back to our community. It is always difficult having to choose just where to be involved and to what extent as our resources are understandably limited. Regardless of this fact, it is always encouraging when we do get involved that the recipients acknowledge the time and value of our involvement. Over the last few months we have received letters of gratitude from Strathyre Girls Home, Vele Secondary School, Tembisa Hospital and The Tsepo Trust. We have also been actively involved with Lakeview Children’s Home, Rekopane Centre and Kopanong Welfare. All very worthy causes! Various team building activities took place over the last few months. These include a challenge soccer match between our Durban and Johannesburg offices where Joburg came out on top. Better luck next time Durbs! A Valentine’s Day celebration was held at the Meadowdale branch in Johannesburg and the turnout of ―red‖ was awesome with each department trying to outdo the other! The pictures tell a story! Our marketing team ran an internal competition for tickets to attend the AFCON Final at Soccer City. The event included tickets to the game, lunch at the famous Chaf Pozi in Soweto and of course the exhilaration of watching our very own Bafana Bafana in action! All those who were fortunate enough to have won a ticket had an absolute ball as they enjoyed the camaraderie and banter that flowed. Our year end is just around the corner and with this in mind, I would like to thank all of our Purple Family for their efforts in making the year a success in somewhat difficult times. It remains for me to emphasize to all of our people the importance of always striving to exceed our client’s expectations and in so doing, making their experience with all facets of our business ―simply outstanding‖. This along with a mutual respect for our fellow employees and a willingness to support each other through thick and thin will truly make our business grow in leaps and bounds and with that comes opportunity for all. Our annual support of the Cansa Shavathon was again something special. On a ―relaxed‖ day, our people took to each other and allowed the creative juices to flow. I have to say that some of the effects of the hair Until next time painting were a little scary! There is no doubt that the painting skills of some of our folk were a little wanting but despite this a good laugh Kind regards was had by all! Andrew Lovell As we all know, our business is driven by people and without same, we would simply not be able to function. Taking this one level higher, there are so many of our people who give of themselves more than just work. We have various functions and activities throughout the year and it is very gratifying to see just how our people step up to the plate and get involved. By way of example, look at our ―Wellness Ambassadors‖ who give freely of their time in this very worthwhile cause! I thank you for your selfless contribution and trust that your interest in our business and people will never wane! Page 2 Thank You Letter Page 3 Thank You Letters! Whilst the rain hampered many of us on the course, it clearly could not stop the fun for the golfers. We would once again like to thank our customers for making this day so successful. By: Gary Hamilton Durban Golf Day FedEx Durban Golf day was held at Beachwood Country Club on the 5th March 2013. The beautiful Durban weather made it a fun filled day for the Golfers. A special thank you to the Durban Sales team for making it a memorable day for the customers and ensured they were well taken care of. The weather was so beautiful; it was such a pleasant day full of enjoyment. By: Nicky Oberholzer Page 10 AFCON Final Soccer Match I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to FedEx for allowing us to be part of a momentous African soccer experience. With South Africa as the hosting nation of the AFCON cup 2013, right on our door step, as selected members we were proud be part of what will be defined in future, as a historic African event. Our outing started off at the infamous ―Chat Pozi‖ situated at the old Soweto power station. Although none of us had the heart or the courage to bunji jump from the east tower, those who did, provided much entertainment while we sat down for lunch. We were in high spirits and looking forward to the opening ceremony and the match. However the rain started pouring and thus delaying the formal opening ceremony as well as the match. Although the opening ceremony proved to be a spectacle, the performance of Bafana Bafana kept us on our toes during the first 45minutes. For me it was the first time visiting the Calabash (Stadium) and I was in awe of its breath-taking magnitude and the stadium’s architectural foundation and design. This was proof that South Africa has the ability to provide the skills and knowledge to build a future for its people, and through determination and hard work, nothing is unachievable. We had an experience of a lifetime and certainly many stories to tell our family members at home. To everyone at FedEx who made this possible, especially Lindiwe Xaji, we are indebted to you forever. To the directors and managers; thank you for sponsoring this memorable outing. Not only have you reiterated the importance of employee recognition, but to some of us you’ve opened a door that we never knew existed. We thank you! Page 12 Corporate Social Initiative (CSI) in Tembisa Hospital On the 22nd March 2013 we went to Tembisa Hospital to celebrate Easter and to spread some love with the kids. On that day we had toys, Easter eggs and the Easter bunny handed out Easter eggs to the kids. Nurses, doctors and parents of the kids were very happy. We gave parents hope that their kids will be fine. Although it was my first time, interacting with families that are affected by illness, I believe that it is the first of many that are to come. I now know how it feels to be admitted to hospital and the only people that you see are the doctors, nurses and members of your family. It was refreshing for parents to see us and we were welcomed with open arms and felt like we are all one big family. I really enjoyed spending time with kids, playing with them, assisting nurses with the kids by bathing them, changing their nappies, etc. I encourage mothers whose children are admitted to hospital to be strong for their children’s sake and to always believe that God will heal them, no matter how sick they might be. Giving a word of hope to the children and their parents, adopting a positive attitude is the first step to healing. I have learned that there really is no better cure than adopting a positive attitude and praying to God. In addition to that I have learned that the best form of giving does not only apply to money or tangible things, but rather giving of yourself, giving a warm hug, a friendly smile or a moment to listen to the cares and concerns of another; that is the best gift to give to someone in need and it does not cost a thing…….. By: Palesa Maleke Page 13 CSI– Lakehaven Children’s Home (Durban) Nashley Govender and Melanie Goolam visited the above Children’s Home on the 28 March 2013 as part of our Easter Drive. The above home houses about 100 children between the ages of 6 years to 16 years. These kids are either abandoned or taken off the streets. The Durban team undertook on a cash or kind donation , collecting non perishable foods which included non-perishables products , soups, peanut butter , jam, Easter eggs and biscuits. With the cash contributions we received , we bought items such as rice, oil and bags of vegetables and sugar. In addition to the above , we also handed out FedEx soccer balls to these kids and I must say they were more than overjoyed. Just a simple gesture put a smile on these kids face and both Nashley and I felt so moved and our initiative was really worth the effort. By: Melanie Goolam Page 14 CSI - Rekopane Centre Good day to all On the 19th of April 2013; Team Hope (comprising of FedEx employees) visited the Rekopane inclusive development centre. The centre is home to just under 40 disabled children aged between 2 to 14 years. Many of these children are unable to stand up straight and are therefore restricted to the beds and others to wheel chairs. Rekopane is run without any Government aid and thus makes it difficult to the effective and efficient running of the centre. Team Hope was contacted few weeks ago to assist with food supplies, as the store room and freezer were empty. Within the week of the call the family, friends and colleagues arranged five vehicles packed with food, winter clothing, blankets, educational toys, camp cots and ten wheelchairs. Upon arrival the children greeted us with hugs and smiles, what an awesome feeling it was! We will be visiting the home on a monthly basis, should you and your network of friends like to Sponsor food, clothing, blankets or spare your time to care for the children that need to be loved, please feel free to contact Arveen Singh. Thank you By: Arveen Singh CSI - Kopanong Welfare On the 28 April 2013 a wellness ambassador, i.e. Lawrence Shilowa, delivered goodies to Kopanong welfare in Tembisa . It was a great joy for children to received food, toys and blankets from FedEx employees and employees.
