The Bachelor of Science in Nursing is a four-year non-direct
entry program.
The pre-professional year provides necessary prerequisites, which
is then followed by three years of concentrated nursing classes and
clinical practice. You can apply to the College of Arts and Science for

Independent Studies and Online Classes
What are Independent Studies Classes?
Class Syllabus
They used to be called correspondence classes and are ideal for
anyone who wants more flexibility in choosing when to work on
their class. A class guide directs you through your readings and
assignments. You will have access to your instructor by phone or
email. Many independent classes are supplemented with additional
learning materials such as print packages, CDs, DVDs, and some
online resources. When registering, independent studies classes have
a section number beginning with X.
A class syllabus is provided for each class and provides important
information about

These classes are offered entirely online and may be supplemented
with interactive components such as audio, video and animation.
Online classes often have a large discussion component that relies
heavily on your input at specific points during the class. When
registering, online classes have a section number beginning with W.
What materials are required for
my classes?
For independent studies classes: a print package including class
information and materials is shipped to you approximately 10 days
before the start of a class. For registrations after August 15 (Term 1)
and December 15 (Term 2), class materials are shipped as soon as
possible.
For online classes: All resources are available online. The class
syllabus becomes available one week before the start of term.

Final Examinations

date, location and time of your final exam.
Outside of Saskatoon: If you wish to write your final examination
at a site outside of Saskatoon, you must submit an Application for
Final Examination Form. Please go to ccde.usask.ca/exam-info for
information and the form.
Materials fees: any fees for materials are assessed when you register
for a class. Materials fees are non-refundable unless materials are
returned, unopened and before the first day of class.

Who teaches the off-campus classes?
All instructors, lab demonstrators and tutors meet academic
requirements and are approved by the University of Saskatchewan.
Your instructor could be someone from your community or someone
who travels from site to site.
When do classes start?
The University has two regular academic terms.
• Fall term: September to December
• Winter term: January to April

How do I register for a class?
Step 1
Apply to the University of Saskatchewan
First, you must be admitted to the University of Saskatchewan
before you can register. The process is quick, convenient and secure.
Visit usask.ca/admission to apply online.
Or, visit your nearest regional college where staff can help you with
your application. This service is available at the following sites:

Once your application is approved, a username (NSID) and temporary
password will be sent to you. You can then log in to the university
system (PAWS) and register for your classes.
How are classes delivered?
1. Log in to paws.usask.ca with your NSID & password
• Face-to-face lectures by instructors, which is just like being in
a classroom on the U of S campus. When registering, off-campus
face-to-face classes have a section number beginning with C.
• Online classes are delivered through a web-based class
management system to provide interactivity with your instructor
and peers. Some off-campus sites offer computer facilities. When
registering, online classes have a section number beginning with W.
• Televised classes consist of televised or videoconferencing
lectures and interactive discussions with your professor. Locally
based tutors or proctors are on hand at sites with six or more
students. Specially developed print packages guide you through
lectures, readings and assignments. When registering, televised
classes have a section number beginning with V.
• Independent Study classes are print-based, home study classes
that provide more flexibility in choosing when to work on your
class. A printed class guide directs you through your readings and
assignments. You will have access to your instructor by phone
or email. When registering, independent studies classes have a
section number beginning with X.
2. Follow the registration process outlined on pages 21 to 22.
3. Use this guide and the classes listed under your nearest regional
college and enter your class selections.

Do you want to pursue a degree in medicine, health, education, social work, law or the arts? Get
started with first and second year classes at the University of Saskatchewan. Many professional
colleges require at least one or two years of pre-study. Here, you can complete your first year in
Agriculture & Bioresources, pre-professional Nursing year or your first two years in Arts & Sciences.
Explore a wide range of classes and experience the benefits of smaller class sizes. You will have
on-site access to academic advising and U of S supports. Our programs are housed in the
Academic Centre of Saskatchewan Polytechnic, Prince Albert Campus, where you have
access to state-of-the art labs, tutorial centres, a library, and fitness facilities.

closer to home. Smaller class sizes and support from family make it easier for you to make the transition
into university studies. Classes are available in North Battleford via lecture and distance delivery. The
other location offering satellite-delivered programming is Meadow Lake. A wide range of student
support and services are provided. All students registering for their first time as a full-time student in a
qualifying certificate, diploma or university program delivered at NWRC are automatically eligible for our

Northlands College is the regional college of Northern Saskatchewan and is an official off-campus site for the College
of Arts and Science and College of Nursing. Northern residents have access to numerous university classes at four
Northlands College university sites. Students can take pre-professional studies in the College of Arts and Science to
gain the prerequisites needed to apply into a variety of professional colleges including Law, Business Administration,
and Social Work. Northlands College university students can also choose to complete a full Bachelor of Arts in Northern
Studies or Bachelor of Science in Nursing without ever leaving northern Saskatchewan. As well, Northlands College

Parkland College provides a comprehensive full-time, face to face instruction, first and second year Arts and
Science program , targeted Bachelor and Master’s level programs, a three year degree in Sociology, the first
year in almost every program (except Engineering), and is a site for the Bachelor of Nursing degree.

the largest off-campus University program, offered through a regional college in Saskatchewan. Learn where

Your registration date for online registration depends on your year of
study. Class registration for Fall and Winter Terms begins in June. To
view your registration date:

Before you can register for classes, you must first be admitted to the
University of Saskatchewan. Apply at your nearest regional college or
online at explore.usask.ca/admissions.
Tuition is based on credit units. Each class you take falls into one of
these tuition categories:

International Student Tuition
International student fees are assessed at 2.6 times the rate of
Canadian students. International students fees for certificate
programs are assessed at 1.5 times the Canadian rate.
Tuition Fees for Senior Citizens
Tuitions for some courses may be waived for people age 65 and
older when enrolled on a part-time basis during the Fall and
Winter Terms. This waiver is for tuition only, and does not include
materials, laboratory fees, student fees and any other associated
costs. Contact Student Central at 1.877.650.1212 or email

Student Fees
All University of Saskatchewan students pay fees, which go toward a
variety of supports services including the University of Saskatchewan
Students’ Union (USSU). Student fees are assessed per term based on
full- or part-time student status. Off campus students can opt in to
Health and Dental Plans. Learn more at students.usask.ca/money/
tuition.php.
Fees are added to your account when you register for classes. To
view your account status, log into PAWS and select ‘Academics’ then
‘Tuition and Fees’. All statements and tax forms are available in PAWS.
Payment Due Dates for Regular Session
• Fall Term 1: September 30, 2015
• Winter Term 2: January 30, 2016
Tuition and fees for multi term classes are divided between both
terms: the first half is due by the Term 1 due date and the second half
is due by the Term 2 due date.

General Information
Late payment fees equal to 1.5% are charged (19.6% yearly) on
overdue accounts.
Balances that remain past due are charged on a monthly basis until
the balance is paid in full.

Since this service is mail-based, you are advised to request library
materials at least three weeks in advance of your assignment due date.
You can expect a five-day turn around. When returning materials,
please allow for a minimum of one-week for mail delivery. Prepaid
postage labels are provided in your package.
Check your library account in PAWS regularly to see your status on
item requests, due dates, and renewals.

have access to free writing support. The Writing Centre will help
you improve essays, reports, and other academic writing. Fill out

with a student card. Photographs and verification can be arranged
through your regional college and at the Prince Albert campus.

Exam schedules are released in October and February. Schedules will
be sent through your university PAWS email account.

Common Visiting Student Application Guide
Common Visiting Student (must be a student at U of S, U of R or Saskatchewan Polytechnic)
As a Common Visiting Student you are able to take courses that
are presented in an alternate mode of delivery at a partner
institution, with the exception of those classes taken in the Spring
and Summer Terms.
A visiting student is eligible to take classes at the U of S with a letter
of permission provided by their home institution with the intent of
transferring earned credit back to the home institution. A letter of
permission is required for admission.
