Essay

Please include an essay of approximately 500 words that highlights your accomplishments and intellectual interests. Please describe any extracurricular or volunteer activities, especially those related to your academic pursuits.

The growing information available on the effects fossil fuels have had and continue to have on the global environment has inspired me to enter the renewable energy field. Gaining energy independence via renewable resources is a step I see as necessary for the survival of our species. Although I am not yet certain which particular portion of the renewable energy field I would like to join, it is becoming increasingly clear as I discover more about these sciences and myself.

One of the ways in which I have learned more about solar technology, is by joining Matt Law's Water Splitting Research

Group. Since the beginning of this school year, I have learned an immense amount of information about the science behind solar technology, peaking my interest in the field. In this coming quarter, I will take on a project of my own, in hopes to gain more independent laboratory experience. Throughout the rest of my college career, I plan to also explore wind, and wave energy technology, in an attempt to discover which of these fields is the best fit for me. After gaining a

PhD, I would like to greatly contribute to my chosen field via research, and eventually incorporate my knowledge into industry.

Throughout high school and early college, my passion for tutoring has grown to be a major portion of my life. Then, at the beginning of this year I stopped tutoring so that I would have the time to both perform research and take 18+ units.

However, the past school year has also been void of my passion for science. I have found no satisfaction quite like when a student struggles through and understands a difficult topic. In retrospection, I have come to the conclusion that teaching students fulfills my life in a way that most other passions cannot, and is a necessary component of my future.

Due to these reasons, I am planning to earn a PhD in either mechanical or materials science engineering, and become a professor. Becoming a professor would suit me well, because of my love for both teaching, and research. I believe that this combination of teaching and research is what will create the most fulfilling future.

Special Qualifications for scholarship(s):

Deborah and Peter Pardoen Memorial Endowed Scholarship:

I am eligible for this scholarship because I am an undergraduate Mechanical Engineering Major with good academic standing. I am both committed to and passionate about my major.

Dr John R. Miltner Annual Scholarship

I am a good choice for this scholarship because I am an undergraduate student with a GPA of 3.91, and significantly contribute on campus. I am a LARC tutor, that takes pride in helping his students reach their highest potential. I am also a mentor to my friends and peers. As I have been lucky enough to have mentors in my past, I see mentoring as an immensely beneficial relationship- one in which both parties learn about themselves and alternate perspectives.

Engineering Dean's Excellence Scholarship

As a mechanical engineering major, I find that my dedication to classes must often take precedence over my other commitments, in order to receive high grades. For me, attending UCI is likely the best opportunity I will ever have to explore the academic world, and learn as much as I possibly can. For these reasons, I purposefully seek out environments that will challenge me, and teach me best. One of my said commitments is performing research in Matt

Law's Lab. Over the past two quarters, I have learned more about water splitting technology than I possibly could otherwise. This is why I am committed to academics, and similar opportunities. I am also committed to my sports team,

UCI Men's Ultimate Frisbee, as they are a large part of my community here on campus.

Reward Opportunity Advancing Distinguished Students (ROADS)

I am well qualified for this scholarship, because I plan to dedicate my life towards the betterment of renewable energy technology. Over the past two quarters, I have performed research on solar water splitting technology in Professor Matt

Law's lab. I also have good academic standing (GPA of 3.91)

Schools First Federal Credit Union Scholarship

I am well qualified for this scholarship because I plan to become a teacher in the future. I have recently rediscovered the

importance of teaching in my life, and plan to continue to teach in the future.

UCI Alumni Association Distinguished Anteater Award

I am well qualified for this scholarship because I am extremely involved on campus in many different ways. Firstly, I participate in research in Matt Law's lab. Second, I teach the Physics 7 series through UCI's LARC. Third, I participate in an on-campus sports club: UCI Men's Ultimate. I am committed to the betterment of this campus.
