Attention! 2016 Cohort Access to UIC Student Recreation Facility Is Now Available with Your UIN. Those of you who have met with me and have been approved for GAT, have been assigned and received notice of your University Identification Number, you have an offer available from the UIC Student Recreation Facility at 730 S Halsted Street. If I have contacted you with your UIN you have been added to a list which was forwarded to the recreation facility and you will now have the opportunity to attend the facility at no charge, twice each semester. If you decide to become a member of the facility you will have the opportunity to join at the UIC Student Semester Rate of $120 which you will be required to pay in full when you sign up. To take advantage of the free visits be sure to bring your government issued ID. You will also be required to complete a participation waiver in order to gain access to the Student Recreation Facility. Page 3 Transfer Assistance Center—SSB The GAT Office is now located inside the Transfer Assistance Center (between admissions and registration). Look inside the window to see if my sign says in or out or refer to my schedule on the front page of this newsletter to see when I will be around. When I am in, the Transfer Center is available to all of you to come in and utilize the space as needed. We only ask that you sign in and out. This is meant to be a quiet study space as well as a good place to meet other transfers. Come in and relax. Enjoy the space. Show UIC that Transfer Students deserve and need a space all their own. I look forward to seeing you all again soon at the new Transfer Center. Patricia UIC Wellness Center The Wellness Center office houses a Resource Center with a range and variety of health and wellness information, including brochures on issues covering everything from stress and nutrition to relationships and abstinence. The Resource Center is open to the entire UIC community. It is a place to get quick information or to research a class project. Visitors are invited to browse the collection of health and personal growth information. Peer Wellness Workshops are available for residence halls, student groups, classes, and community organizations. These programs, facilitated by trained wellness peer educators from the student organization WAVES, cover the latest information on alcohol, relationships, contraception, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI), HIV/AIDS, stress, and much more. Free Consultations with a Health Educator The Wellness Center offers confidential consultations with a health educator. Staff can provide consultation and referrals for topics including: substance use, sexual well-being, general nutrition, safety, and more. These can be scheduled or on a walk-in basis. To schedule a session, contact the Wellness Center at 312-413-2120. Wellness Wednesdays Booth Each week, the Wellness Center comes out of the depths of the Student Center East (formerly CCC) to bring health information to you! Wellness Wednesdays is a service that provides the UIC community with a wealth of health-related information, on topics ranging from lung cancer and tobacco use to alcohol and sexually transmitted infections. Take advantage of a wide variety of brochures, pamphlets, and, as always, free condoms. Stop by the Wellness Wednesdays booth every Wednesday from 11:00 A.M to 1:00 P.M. next to the Pier Room in the Student Center East, to see what the Wellness Center has to offer you! Campus Events Unity Walk Walk for Unity. Walk for Fun. Walk for Wellness. This event is a celebration of the diversity of our campus and brings the campus together through a fun walk through the UIC neighborhood. National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week This event promotes responsible drinking, stresses personal responsibility, provides practical safety tips, and positive choices students can make to protect themselves and their friends. Great American Smokeout - This event encourages smoking cessation, by providing students with information on the harmful effects of smoking, and on proven strategies for smoking cessation. World AIDS Day This event is intended to provide students with information and resources on HIV/ AIDS, including testing information and sites, and encourages students to take a personal responsibility to stop the spread of HIV. De-Stress Days This week long event is held during finals week each semester and is intended to help students unwind and de-stress during their finals and provides students with energy foods, pencils, stress relievers and tips. Safer Spring Break This event, held the week before students leave for Spring Break, provides students with the tools to stay safe during their vacations in an interactive and fun format. Wellness Jam This event is a wellness fair that focuses on educating students, faculty and staff about ways to address the eight dimensions of wellness. On and off campus agencies, student groups and departments provide participants with a variety of wellness information. For those of you who want to get a jump start on the application process feel free to begin completing the application by going to Dec 18 at 1pm http://www.uic.edu/depts/oar/undergrad/apply_transfer.html or open the hyperlink on the Apply Now button below. Be sure to complete the UIC web application (not the common application) by clicking on the box that says “Apply Now”. Remember, as long as you have maintained the 3.0 gpa (3.5 gpa for nutrition), you are guaranteed admission. You will still need to include a personal statement and any other written requirements by your individual UIC college. Your deadline to apply is February 1, 2015 The deadline to submit supporting documents (your transcript(s) and fee waiver form) is February 15, 2015. Please wait until your final grades are posted for this fall 2014 semester before sending in your transcripts (January is a good time). Transcripts can be ordered online through Parchment and sent electronically to UIC. They already have our email address so no need to worry. You may also have your registrar print out a copy and you can either mail it or drop it off to us a the Admissions Office in SSB. Please be sure they are unopened. For those of you who have a few credits from other institutions please be sure to submit these transcripts as well. There is no way around this. You must include ALL coursework even if you feel it will not transfer. Without this information your application will be considered incomplete. Note: You may receive emails from UIC stating that the deadline to transfer is March 31. This does not apply if you intend to apply under the GAT Program. The GAT application deadline will always be February 1. Page 8 Dec 4 at 1pm GAT Students past and present are welcome to join us for our bi-weekly meetings every first and third Friday of each month. Meeting will be begin in the Transfer Assistance Center (SSB) at 1pm. Meetings will include planning future gatherings, campus activities, learning about campus programs, the formation of a new student organization, volunteer events and most importantly the opportunity to get to know each other.
