Wisnia rabbi@bethchaim.org Pledge to Vote Today From January 15 through April 30, 2015 – the American Zionist Movement will hold open voting for all American Jews to determine the United States’ delegation to the 2015 World Zionist Organization Congress. Every five years a new Congress meets in Israel with representatives from every Jewish community all over the world. At this meeting policies are decided, money is allocated, and the future of the Jewish community is shaped. Each and every Jew has the opportunity to vote in this election. Please go online and vote for the organization and the platform that most aligns with your personal views. This will shape the agenda of the next WZO Congress by electing representatives who align with the party platform you choose. I am supporting the ARZA platform, and if enough of us vote for the ARZA platform, I will be appointed a delegate to the Congress to push the ARZA agenda. By pledging at the website, and then voting after January 15 you will support ARZA-Representing Reform Judaism slate in the 2015 World Zionist Organization elections. Visit WWW.R E FOR M J EWS4I S RAE L.OR G for more information and to register. This is what we stand for: s Women’s Rights & Gender Equality We strive to create a Jewish world in which gender equality is the rule – where men and women can pray, work and live together as equals deserving of the same respect and honor. We envision and work for an Israeli society in which all denominations are treated fairly and with respect – and all of us are seen as Jews, regardless of our level of observance. Lasting peace, security and stability for Israel, the Palestinians and the surrounding Middle East region is possible and although the road may seem long, we are building the path to that peace every day. There is much at stake if we want to determine that the values we hold dear will become reality in the Israel that we love. By signing up and voting ARZA-Representing Reform Judaism in the 2015 World Zionist Organization, you’ll stay up-to-date on registration and voting logistics, and you’ll receive useful information about the elections to pass on to your family and friends. Please note that there is a $10 poll tax which covers the cost of the elections. Go on the web to WWW.REFORMJEWS4ISRAEL.ORG and vote in the Zionist election for the ARZA slate. I am running as a candidate to push the ARZA agenda and make Israel pluralistic. If we get enough votes and seats at the next Zionist congress, I will be your representative. Please vote ARZA in the WZO election. Tikkun Olam: Repairing the World My tikkun olam story began in high school. Like many teenagers today, I was required to perform a certain number of hours of community service. I chose to volunteer with the Head Start Program, working one afternoon a week with low-income children in Trenton who needed help to enter kindergarten. Most of my students were Hispanic, so I was able to practice the Spanish I was learning in class while spending time with children, thereby combining several of my passions at once. I found this experience to be so rewarding that I vowed to make tikkun olam an integral part of my life. In college and rabbinical school I tutored English to Ethiopian immigrants in Israel, and I volunteered in soup kitchens. When I lived in New York, I developed a new appreciation for the hunger and homelessness I witnessed every day. Now that I am a rabbi, I have the opportunity to work with other committed people who wish to do tikkun olam and repair the broken world in which we live. At this time of year we remember Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who gave his life to make the world a better place. Abraham Joshua Heschel, one of the greatest rabbis of the 20th century, marched for civil rights with Dr. King and claimed that in doing so, he prayed with his feet. Let us follow these leaders’ example and do our part to end hunger, homelessness, poverty, ignorance, and other injustices that plague our society. Our tradition teaches that you are not obligated to complete this never-ending work, but neither are you free to ignore it. This is my tikkun olam story. What is yours? We’ve recently implemented an energy controls system that ties together our 14 heating and cooling units. It allows us to monitor temperatures throughout the building, schedule occupied and unoccupied times and best of all, we can do this (securely) from any internet browser inside or outside of the building at ANY time. Our HVAC vendor, Tustin Mechanical Systems has a division dedicated to businesses that have the desire to improve their operational efficiencies and save money through smart usage. The savings can be seen instantly, and the return on investment is approximately three years. In simple terms, this means we are already seeing savings in the utilities line of our budget, and the system will pay for itself in a relatively short window of time. No more heating or cooling rooms of the building without a specific reason, no more wasting energy, and substantial more savings! In addition to the Tustin Energy Controls system, we also installed three brand new, high efficiency, state funded heating and cooling units this past summer. We worked with Tri-State Lighting and Energy to apply for and receive state funding of these units (Multi-Purpose Room, Library and Chapel). We paid a third of what we would have paid had we gone directly through an HVAC vendor. Again, energy efficiency and MAJOR savings. We have partnered with Absolutely Energized Power Systems (www.aepowersystems.com) to evaluate our interior and exterior lighting solutions and make planned improvements. Full disclosure: their owner, Dan Lichtman, is a member of our synagogue. Dan generously donated and installed the super bright, energy efficient, LED flood lights that illuminate our gorgeous stained glass windows. His company is also not charging us labor for installation of solutions that we choose to implement. To date, we are testing motion detectors in offices, LED replacements for hallway and classroom lighting and fairly soon, we are also evaluating LED lighting for the parking lot lights and exterior lighting affixed to our building. We are very fortunate that New Jersey has a fantastic rebate program that provides instant savings on these solutions as well. The majority of the cost of our utility bills is made up of lighting, heating and cooling (not much different than your homes). Beth Chaim is vigilant in our approach to operational efficiency. With the details above, you can see that doing it the way we always did was not saving us any money. By staying on top of current technology and solutions, we can assure our members that we are doing everything we can to take advantage of savings and reduce our carbon footprint. All of the solutions presented in this article started as discussions in the House Committee. If you have feedback or “bright ideas” you would like to share, please join us for our House Committee meetings. Email or call the office to make sure the date and time are the same as they are on the calendar in this bulletin. “That’s great!” you say. “It’s good that Beth Chaim is doing all they can do to reduce expenses and help the environment.” But that’s not all we are doing; there’s more! Friday, January 9 and Friday, February 6 Join us at 6pm for pizza and salad ($5 donation per person) Then stay for a hands-clapping, singing, dancing, Shabbat-rockin‛ service for our youngest folks and those who love them. For more information, or to indicate your attendance plans, please contact Anne Berman-Waldorf, educator@bethchaim.org or 609-799-9693. www.bethchaim.org Educator Page 5 Anne Berman-Waldorf educator@bethchaim.org We Have Much To Offer With all due respect to T.S. Eliot who chose April, I believe that January and February are the cruelest months. The weather is cold. The skies are dark. Winter has become tiresome…. people are cranky….it gets me every year. The alarm is not my friend, leaving my warm and cozy bed is an effort and, once out, I just want to spend my days in jammies with a fire in the fireplace. I know that I cannot be alone in my feelings about the deep, dark days of winter. So what to do? Judaism tells us that, as individuals, we are important but our real power, our true impact, is found when we join together with others and form a community. Groups of people impact real change – in ourselves, in others and in the world. As Jews, we gather to pray. The act of sitting with others, speaking common words, sharing common songs and tunes is uplifting and powerful. First idea – elevate your soul by coming to synagogue to welcome Shabbat. Have little ones? Join us for Tot Shabbat on Fridays January 9 and February 6. We begin with dinner at 6pm, followed by a hands-clapping, finger-snapping Shabbat experience. The evening is over by 7pm. Looking for a musical Shabbat experience? Come to Beth Chaim at 7pm on January 30 and February 20. Our Religious School students, under the direction of Cantor Binder will sing in January; in February – it’s a reprise of our ever popular Rock Shabbat. The other Fridays in January and February, come at 8pm. The sermon is interesting, the evening is soothing – and there are cookies! Shabbat is when we find God among us as we come together in song and prayer. Second idea – lift your spirits by coming to Beth Chaim to share and celebrate. Join us on January 10 for “Merlot and a Movie” (see page 1). The evening begins with wine and conversation (wine never hurts); we will end Shabbat with Havdalah and then see an Oscar-winning short film that presents a light-hearted view of the current situation in Israel. Explore the boundaries of the West Bank through music and dance….and then continue the evening with dinner at KC Prime. There is no cost for the evening (except for dinner, we’ll make the reservation but you pay your bill!) but the payoff has the potential to be great – visit with old and new friends, share food and wine….what could be bad! Third idea – fill your head with knowledge. Take advantage of the many educational programs the congregation offers – weekdays and evenings – come and learn to knit with Sisterhood, learn about Maimonides on Sunday mornings or celebrate the power of Jewish Woman-hood on Wednesday evenings. Pirke Avot encourages us to “find a teacher, find a friend.” I encourage you to do both by taking advantage of the programming and fellowship found at Beth Chaim. Strong Jewish Women 3 Evenings of Girl Power for Mothers & Daughters in grades 4-6 Wednesday evenings, 6:30-7:45pm January 14, February 18 & March 18 $54 per family Join Rabbi Adena Blum and Anne Berman-Waldorf for three evenings focused on being Jewish and female in the modern world. Each evening will include dinner, discussion and activities. For more information, or to RSVP, please contact Anne Berman-Waldorf, educator@bethchaim.org or 609-799-9693. www.bethchaim.org Page 6 Pre-School Hyla Nusbaum earlychildhood@bethchaim.org Happy 2015! Winter is here and it might be cold outside but not inside at Beth Chaim Pre-School. Our classes resume on January 5 and we welcome some new friends and families to our school. We have added karate on Thursdays at 12:45pm to our list of physical activities for indoor fun during the winter. We will begin our winter sessions of soccer on Mondays and basketball on Wednesdays, both at 12:45pm. It is not too late to sign up for any of these programs. Please call 609-799-8811 for information. Although it is only the beginning of 2015 we are beginning our registration for September. We still have a few openings for the remainder of this school year. The earlier you register the better! We will first offer registration to our current children and their families and then open it up to the public. By February we will also begin our camp registration. Let me know if you have relatives or friends that would like to participate in our wonderful programs. Everyone is welcome! Please join me on Friday, January 9 and Friday, February 6 for our Family Tot Shabbats. They begin at 6:00pm with a pizza dinner. It continues with a short family service geared toward the young child. This teaches our children to come together as a community to learn Shabbat traditions. Come meet new people and celebrate together! When you are in the synagogue building you should feel free to walk down the hallways to view our creative bulletin boards. Our teachers are the best! They provide our children with a warm, safe, nurturing, and stimulating environment. They are involved in continuing education on a weekly basis. We provide monthly workshops to stay current on all early childhood happenings. We also bring in guest speakers for current updates. We now offer hot lunches twice a week! There is Mac and Cheese on Mondays and Pizza on Fridays. There is always something healthy like fruit or vegetables to go along with the hot lunch. The parents and children love our special lunch days! Stay safe and warm this winter! In one way or another your life is rooted in Jewish experiences connecting you to the Jewish community. Chances are you already support local Jewish charitable organizations, but have you included these organizations in your will or estate plan? It is easier to do than you might think! By leaving a legacy, you can assure that the traditions and institutions like BETH CHAIM, that mean so much to you today will exist for future generations. Congregation Beth Chaim, along with 11 other partners, are participating in the Life and Legacy program being administered by the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Mercer (JCFGM) that receives matching grants from the Harold Grinspoon Foundation (HGF). This partnership promotes after-lifetime giving to benefit local Jewish day schools, synagogues, social service organizations and other Jewish entities. Through training, support and monetary incentives, Life and Legacy motivates Jewish Organizations to integrate legacy giving into their philanthropic culture in order to assure Jewish tomorrows. By making a Legacy commitment you can: and grandparents. grandchildren. support Jewish life. All of us, regardless of age, wealth or affiliation, have the ability to leave a legacy. Your legacy gift of any size can be customized and structured to fit your lifestyle, family and financial needs. Please join me and consider leaving a Life and Legacy Promise today for tomorrow! We had 30 attendees who had a fun evening playing, eating, and schmoozing. Most importantly, just from this event, $310 in gift cards was donated to JFCS so parents could purchase Chanukah gifts for their children. It was wonderful to see all of the energy and community that was created by the Shop and Shmooze event as well. Sisterhood represented the Beth Chaim Gift Shop and we all shopped and schmoozed with our fellow vendors and the attendees. We look forward to the energy that was generated by that wonderful event continuing throughout the year. Sisterhood provided additional Chanukah shopping with the Beth Chaim Gift Shop in the lobby in December. Lots of dreidels, gelt, menorahs and candles changed hands. We are always available for your Judaica shopping needs, just get in contact with us. Now that the holidays have past, everyone is getting back into their routines for the winter months. Staying snuggly warm at home has its benefits, but consider coming out to spend some time with your Beth Chaim friends at the many events being held at the Temple. I resolve to get out of the house more, connect with people in person (facebook is fun, but so is laughing together over a cup of coffee) and learn something new as a group. Sisterhood has several events to keep you connected with old friends and new. Road Trip!!! On Sunday, January 25 Sisterhood is hosting a bus trip to NYC to see Theater (see page 13). This is a limited engagement and seats are limited, so please be in touch with Gayle Weisberg to reserve your place. Our Annual Chai Tea and Knitting for a Cause is on Sunday, January 11. You don’t have to knit to enjoy an afternoon with us. We will be collecting donated new socks, in addition to our handmade hats and scarves. Monday, January 26 will be a with our Beth Chaim Baker, Leah Best-Damron. Watch your email and the Beth Chaim eNewsletter for more details. On March 1 Sisterhood will again be visiting the Art Museum (see page 12) for a docent led tour. Space is limited, so please RSVP to Marlene Brown to reserve your spot. There’s so much to do and more scheduled for the spring. So please join me in my resolution to get out and participate as much as possible in 2015! Happy New Year! This is really starting to sound like “The Future.” Somehow, we made it, and should celebrate yet another year around the sun together. Many people use the New Year to pick up a new hobby, to make some resolutions, or to break some bad habits. We at the Beth Chaim Men’s Club have some advice: add us to your 2015 “To-Do” list. We can promise you that you’ll look better, feel better, be happier, and be more connected to Beth Chaim, and more. What other “New Year’s Resolution” can promise you all that? I am also extremely proud of our members that were part of the “Joel’s Joggers” team which participated in the “PurpleStride” 5K to benefit pancreatic cancer research and in memory of Joel Selikoff. As a team, we exceeded our fundraising goals, and the organization itself was able to raise over $300,000. One of our members finished 2nd in his age-group. Also, even though I was being passed by sprinting children, I was able to finish in 19th in my age-group, which I thought was very good. In all fairness, they were very athletic kids. We had a flurry of activity during the closing months of 2014. Not only did we have our breakfasts, and nights out, we celebrated Halloween by participating in a walking “Ghost Tour”. This well-attended activity allowed us to spend some time with some of the famous and infamous dearly-departed residents of Princeton. Considering the cold and fog on the night that we were walking through town, I was a little freaked out by the stories (but, please don’t tell anyone). For Chanukah, benefited the JFCS “LIGHTS” program. We have also held our blood drive, and volunteered at the TASK Soup Kitchen. We have successfully completed our first book club. As you can see, we always have something going on, and something for every man of Beth Chaim. In the coming year, we have some really exciting things planned. By the time you read this, we will be deep into our planning for the Purim carnival (see page17), and hopefully digging out of a mild-winter. As you look to all of the things that you are looking to change in 2015, I’d ask that you consider changing one easy thing: what you do on one Sunday morning per month. On that Sunday morning, rather than do the things you do now, why not consider coming to join us for a breakfast? Men’s Club is the means to accomplish your New Year’s goals. You’ll make new friends, manage stress, get more educated, and volunteer more. The only thing we can’t promise is that you’ll get more fit, because the bagels and lox at our meetings are delicious. That part is going to have to be on you, but we’ll be there to support you all through the year. Unfortunately, there’s still a lot more to do. Because of this past winter’s unexpected and unusually harsh weather, several of our trees were damaged beyond saving. We’ve already removed 4 trees and 5 or 6 more are scheduled for removal. In their place we hope to plant beautiful new, vibrant, flowering trees which will not only improve the Temple’s aesthetic but will benefit this and future generations. Did you know that trees properly placed around buildings can reduce air conditioning needs by 30% and save 20%-50% in heating costs, according to the USDA Forest Service. And, in anticipation of Tu B’Shevat 2/4/15 (Israel’s Arbor Day) YOU CAN HELP…. $250 or more toward the purchase of new trees and have your generous donation highlighted with a special dedication of your choosing in our Beth Chaim Bulletin. Just send us your check and desired dedication and we’ll take care of the rest! We thank you in advance for helping to make Beth Chaim shine! www.bethchaim.org Page 21 Good & Welfare The Board and Trustees of Congregation Beth Chaim wish to extend their sincerest condolences to the families of the following individuals upon their passing: Joseph Russell, father of Ilene Cashman Isadore Nahoum, father of Ira Nahoum Howard Stiefel, brother of Elliot Stiefel Clifford Altfeld, brother of Cindy Bright Phyllis Balaban, mother of Mark and Alan Balaban Cynthia W.
