Automotive technology and electrics
give you all the skills you need to test,
repair, maintain and build cars and their
systems. Plus you get a large chunk
of practical experience in our fully
equipped workshops.
Our motorsport facility is conveniently
located in Pukekohe for those wishing
to enter the motorsport industry as part
of a pit crew. With the Pukekohe Park
Raceway a short drive away, trainees
can take advantage of the action and
race their specially modified vehicles at
the end of their training.

MIT Otara
Learn how to create artwork on the bodies
of vehicles as well as refinishing skills to
meet the requirements of industry, including
preparing metal or plastic for spraypainting,
minor filling, priming, colour coating, polishing
and buffing. You will then be ready to work
on repairs, refinishing, custom paintwork,
graphics, finishing and other specialised
coating applications, or go on to study the
National Certificate in Vehicle Refinishing
Technology.
One year

MIT Otara
Take on the challenge of restoring cars to
their original condition. Learn how to restore
a vehicle by removing the damaged parts
of a car body, beating them back into shape
then placing them back on the vehicle, as
well as how to replace damaged panels with
new ones. You will then be ready to work on
collision, chassis and corrosion repairs, vehicle
certification, classic car restoration and motor
body building, or go on to a traineeship in
the industry or further study. Panelbeaters
have a wide range of automotive skills and
knowledge.

You will learn at one of the largest and most innovative automotive
and vehicle technology schools in New Zealand, where the
majority of our students find employment in the trade, here and
overseas. Our workshops at MIT Otara have the resources and
equipment necessary to get the practical skills for your chosen

skills recognised.
Develop your general skills in vehicle and
electrical technology to meet the standards
of the industry. Then go on to learn specific
skills and gain a competitive edge with
a specialisation in your choice of light
automotive, automotive electrical
or motorsport.
On the Light Automotive strand; you will learn
about the location, function and operation of
major vehicle components and systems. When
you graduate you will be ready to work as a
trainee automotive technician carrying out
repairs under supervision.
On the Automotive Electrical strand; you will
develop the skills to successfully carry out
jobs such as electrical testing, calculations,
fault analysis, fault repair and fitting electrical
components to a vehicle. When you graduate
you will be ready to work as a technician
under supervision.
The Motorsport strand; is based in Pukekohe,
where you will gain the skills to modify a
vehicle under supervision for participation
in motorsport. When you graduate you will
be ready to work as a technician under
supervision and begin an apprenticeship
with the Motor Industry Training Organisation
(MITO) or if you want further training you can
go on to study higher level certificates.

automotive technology and autotronics
including motorsport.
The Light Automotive strand; qualifies
you as a technician, able to work without
supervision. You’ll learn the diagnosis, repair
and service procedures for most of the major
vehicle systems including engine and cooling,
fuel and emissions, chassis and drivelines,
heating, venting and exhaust and electrical
systems. We will ensure you are ready to work
unsupervised as a technician in the industry.
Successful students will gain Level 3 and Level
4 units towards the National Certificate in
Automotive Engineering (Level 4).

The Automotive Electrical strand; is the next
step in your automotive electrical career
and will get you up to speed as a reliable
assistant technician. You will build on your
knowledge base or industry experience, and
develop skills to conduct electrical/electronic
testing, carry out electrical trade calculations,
carry out electrical/electronic diagnostics and
analysis, overhaul electrical components and
rectify electrical faults, and fit electrical and
electronic components to a motor vehicle, all
under supervision. You will be ready to work
in the automotive electrical industry as an
assistant technician or in specialist areas, such
as satellite control of machine hydraulics or
vehicle position control.
The Motorsport strand; is the next step in
your motorsport career and this programme
will equip you with the knowledge and skills
needed to work in the world of managed
motorsport events. You will build on your base
of knowledge and skills required to modify a
vehicle for participation in motorsport, as well
as learn about pit crew protocol. You will also
have the opportunity to move into other areas
in the automotive engineering, automotive
electrical, motor body and vehicle refinishing
trades.
Based in Pukekohe, this innovative and flexible
programme is designed to give you experience
in a range of trade disciplines within the
automotive industry, and to equip you with
sufficient knowledge and skills, to prepare
under supervision, an automotive vehicle
for participation in motorsport. You can take
advantage of the action and race your specially
modified vehicle at the test day/s at the end
of your training. You'll be ready to work as a
technician under supervision in the motorsport
industry, or you can also further your training
with a national certificate.

Develop basic construction skills and
knowledge, then apply them on a real-world
building project.
Create a solid foundation of carpentry
skills and knowledge, then apply them on
a real-world building project.
Learn to use a range of hand tools, portable
power tools and machines under supervision,
select and correctly install the appropriate
building materials and fastenings, interpret
simple drawings to obtain building dimensions,
and dispose of waste material with
environmental considerations.
Have you completed the MIT Certificate in
Entry to Carpentry (Level 3) or do you have
one year’s industry experience? Expand
your use of hand tools, portable power tools
and machinery. Learn about the materials
and processes relating to the structures and
envelopments of a single-storey, threebedroom timber-framed house and how to
install appliances and fixtures. Apply your skills
on-site by working on the construction of this
type of house.
Apply your skills by working on the
construction of a non-consented timberframed building and be able to describe
the steps needed to build one. Develop the
necessary safety awareness for employment
on a building site.
When you have completed the certificate, and
undertaken all on-site training, you can apply
for the National Certificate in Carpentry
(Level 4), or begin work in the building
industry under supervision.

Open up your opportunities in the growing
plumbing and gasfitting industry, and you could
shorten your apprenticeship by up to one year.
Develop basic skills in residential plumbing
and gasfitting, including hot and cold water,
sanitary and gasfitting supply systems,
drainlaying and roofing. Obtain unit standards
in health and safety and further your knowledge
of the Building Act regulations, and plumbing
and gasfitting codes and standards.
As part of our courses we regularly take
students on industry visits which include
Watercare water treatment plants, and Apex
for valves, Methven for tapware, Rheem
and Rinnai for manufacturers, Buteline for
pipework and Marley for piping and drainage
systems. This means you keep pace with
current plumbing supplies, appliances,
installations and new technologies.
Our fully qualified team will prepare you to
be industry ready as an apprentice or trainee
plumber and could provide work experience
with local plumbers, drainlayers, gasfitters
or roofers.
