IN DEDICATION
the trustees and staff of the Greenwich Village society for historic preservation were saddened by the death
of trustee Arbie thalacker in January of 2012. Arbie was elected a trustee of the society in 1993 and served as
president from 2009 to 2011. throughout his many years of service to the organization, he offered his expertise,
leadership, and passionate commitment to the preservation of the Village.
Arbie chaired the society’s preservation committee for many years. this committee works to safeguard our
neighborhoods’ landmark and zoning protections, expand landmark districts where appropriate, and ensure that
new development is compatible in scale, character, and design with its surroundings.
Arbie also provided his legal expertise in service to the society. he guided the society through the complexities
surrounding the creation of the neighborhood preservation center as a cooperative building for historic preservation organizations. he also facilitated strategic planning sessions for the Board of trustees that led to improvements in the governance of the organization.
in 2005, Arbie and his wife deborah Garrett opened their late-Federal style townhouse on commerce street
for GVshp’s Annual house tour. Arbie made himself available all day to chat with anyone who was interested
in the storied history of his home and the rich historic details that he had devoted so much effort to preserve.
the trustees and staff of the society have deeply felt his absence, but will remember his wisdom, personal
warmth, and dedication to the preservation of the Village with great joy and gratitude. it is in fond remembrance
that we dedicate the 2012 house tour to Arbie thalacker.
NEW YORK STUDIO SCHOOL, 8 WEST 8TH STREET
no. 8 west 8th street has been home to the new york studio school of drawing, painting and sculpture since
1967. the building itself has an extraordinary history; art has been continuously created within its walls for much
of the 20th century up through today. the site is actually an amalgam of eight original buildings: four townhouses
and four carriage houses. the buildings are a national historic landmark, part of the Greenwich Village historic
district, and were included on the 2012 world Monuments watch.
the buildings, dating from 1838, were purchased by Gertrude Vanderbilt whitney beginning in 1907. Mrs.
whitney was not only an artist, but she was also one of the greatest patrons of the arts in united states history;
she combined the space to create her own private studio, residence, and gallery. in 1931, following a complete
remodeling of the interiors and exteriors, the buildings reopened as the whitney Museum of American Art,
which remained here until 1954.
Virtually intact from the whitney period, the site beautifully accommodates the needs of the new york studio
school. the nyss was formed in 1964 in direct response to the pressing need for an atelier-based school where
aspiring young artists could learn how to paint, draw, or sculpt without distraction. to this end, the school has
established a studio-based curriculum that parallels an artist’s normal working day. under the direction of the
current dean, Graham nickson, the school’s curriculum has been expanded to include a two-year Master of Fine
Arts program, a three-year certificate program, and the internationally renowned drawing Marathon. the school
also offers evening and saturday classes, and summer sessions as well as an acclaimed evening lecture series
and a full roster of gallery exhibitions, which are open to the general public free of charge.
nyss has taken extraordinary pains to preserve this building’s history, most recently in the stabilization of and
preservation plans for the whitney studio. the ornate fireplace and bas-relief ceiling in the original whitney
studio were commissioned by Mrs. whitney in 1918 and created by artist robert winthrop chanler. the various
symbols and figures on the ceiling are still appealing despite many repaintings over the years, and the blazing
fireplace and chimney piece remain a focal point. this historic room will undergo an extensive restoration,
conserving the plasterwork and restoring the colorful finishes.

KATE BOSTOCK SHEFFERMAN & JESSE SHEFFERMAN I 55 JANE STREET
Kate Bostock and Jesse shefferman have lived in Greenwich Village for a decade and thought they would never
leave their beloved lower Fifth Avenue residence. however, renovating a townhouse was the perfect way to gain
more space for their young children in a neighborhood they love. indeed, as a trustee of the Greenwich Village
society, Kate’s affection for the area extends well beyond the walls of their 1846 Greek revival home.
Although many historic details were stripped from the home over the years, Kate and Jesse worked with
architecture firm hottenroth + Joseph to create a space that respects the needs of a modern family yet embraces
the history of the house. the renovation, completed by dhe company, uncovered and restored some treasures
which were hidden for years, including the classical front door surround and sidelights with interior hinged doors.
interior designer elizabeth Bauer helped the couple blend modern and traditional décor elements, juxtaposing
the couple’s collection with new pieces. Artwork by david hockney, minimalist robert Mangold, and chicagobased william o’Brien were already part of Kate and Jesse’s collection. An early 20th century Bokhara caucasian
rug complements the modern brass chandelier in the library, where French baked oak wood floors lead to the
l-shaped extension, an earlier renovation to the house where the couple added accoutrements for entertaining.
the sculpted staircase, designed by david hottenroth and relocated to the rear of the home, provides for an
open entry on the parlor floor. this new layout also allows for three windows in the master bedroom, casting
more natural light on the Venetian plaster walls and antique dresser and table holding cherished family
photographs. Modern touches include the ikat covered wing-chairs and carrera and linea marble in the master
bathroom. one floor up, the children’s level is playfully decorated with colorful wallpaper from Mally skok design
in aqua and pink. A set of botanical prints, which was one of Kate’s first purchases as a single working person in
new york city, hangs in the guest room.
the basement kitchen is used for the family’s everyday meals, but also seamlessly transitions to a formal dining
area for evenings when the couple entertains. on nice days, the party moves outdoors to the garden, imagined
by landscape architect robin Key, a Jane street neighbor. perhaps Kate and Jesse’s favorite party story is 55 Jane
street’s biggest claim to fame: 55 Jane was John shaft’s apartment number in the original 1971 eponymously
named movie.

ELISABETH DE KERGORLAY I 19 WEST 12TH STREET
the bold and eclectic design of this grand townhouse just off lower Fifth Avenue is a true reflection of its owner,
elisabeth de Kergorlay. in designing the interior of her Greek revival home, elisabeth brought in pieces, old and
new, from her own collection originating both from europe and the united states. the house, constructed in
1845, was originally three stories high and belonged to a wall street attorney; in 1920, it was converted to studio
apartments.
entering the front parlor is a visual feast: the restored crown molding, full-length windows and the antique mirror
over the mantle—once belonging to elisabeth’s mother—mix effortlessly with the bold prints of the sofas and
the contemporary Murano glass chandelier, whose twin hangs in the dining room. Amongst the numerous pieces
of artwork, “shopping Bag” by contemporary dutch photographer hendrik Kerstens and a painting by African
artist Barthélémy toguo stand out.
cooking for friends and family is an important part of elisabeth’s life. this is certainly evident at the garden level
where the open kitchen and large oval dining table encourage interaction between both spaces. Modern bright
red cabinets are juxtaposed against rustic Belgian wood floors. elisabeth loves how the stainless steel countertops,
an unusual choice for a residential kitchen, reveal just how much she uses her kitchen.
the second floor guest room features an impressive display of dutch, italian, and French old Master drawings
that was collected by elisabeth’s father over a 50-year period and gives this room a traditional feel. this formality
is playfully turned around in the hallway, as pink and cream runners visually direct you from room to room and
black and white stripes add texture to the walls.
the top floor of the house is elisabeth’s own sanctuary. her daring use of print and color enlivens the bedroom,
and the dark wood floor is brightened by a custom-made French rug. skylights, which were part of the late 1930s
top floor addition, are a welcome source of natural light. through the closet, a luxurious master bathroom is
finished in calacatta marble, lending the space a serene feel. the terry cloth chaise lounge next to the window
is one of elisabeth’s favorite nooks; she can be found reading there every morning. when she craves a more
expansive view, the roof garden, with views of lower Manhattan, provides a captivating vista.

MOLLY & WILLIAM GILMORE I 34 GROVE STREET
on a charming tree-lined street stands the transitional Greek revival/italianate row house that has been owned
by the Gilmore family for decades. Built by linus scudder in 1851-52 as part of a row of six, the home’s tall parlor
floor casement windows and the ornate cast iron stair railing are typical of the italianate style.
the recent history of this townhouse is truly a family affair. it was purchased by william’s father, robert w.
Gilmore, as an investment property in the 1960s. william proudly remembers that, until recently, every
tenant had been either a family member or a friend. After william and Molly married in 2010, they looked forward
to living in the house and starting a family. the Gilmores hired linda yowell of linda yowell Architects to convert
the parlor and basement floors to a larger duplex apartment for the young couple. the resulting renovation
successfully blends both the old and the new.
the Gilmores’ commitment to their home’s past is most evident in their careful restoration of the stunning cast
plasterwork in the parlor. the ceiling moldings, some of which had to be painstakingly recast, include grape leaf
and rosette motifs; the dramatic hanging arches with elaborate pendants are truly spectacular. Molly and william
chose late Victorian gas-style chandeliers to complement the plaster medallions at the center of each room and
re-introduced the intricately-paneled doors to this floor after they had been hidden in the cellar for years. the
middle and rear room of the triple parlor are divided by pocket doors with etched glass panels. Family heirlooms,
such as the gilded pier mirror and the framed historic maps of new york hanging on the wall, add another layer
of family history to the home.
the kitchen off the back parlor, though a new addition, integrates itself into the character of the home by using
materials found elsewhere: the quartzite countertops relate to the parlor fireplaces, the bead board cabinets to
the downstairs stair wall, and the bluestone floors to the pavers in the rear garden.
Modern design choices in the master bedroom level are meticulously blended with historic details, including
historic pine floors and an original brick and brownstone hearth in william and Molly’s master bathroom. the
large rear garden was designed by landscape architect robin Key of robin Key landscape Architecture, whose
work is also featured at another home on this year’s tour: 55 Jane street.   

DOUGLAS & CHRISTINA KEPPLE I 67 BEDFORD STREET
walking through the Greek revival townhouse of douglas and christina Kepple feels as if you’ve been instantly
transported to a relaxing getaway. christina, who grew up outside Boston and fell in love with the historic charm
of Beacon hill, knew that the west Village was the ideal place to call home when douglas asked her where she
wanted to live. their search ten years ago led them to this 1836 house, which was originally 2 ½ stories and
looked similar to its neighbor just across the street. Architect heather Aman of heather Aman design worked
with the Kepples to convert it back to a private residence after it had been an apartment house for over 80 years.
the carefully restored façade includes the re-introduction of the raised stoop entry.
historic interior details, however, had long been lost. christina collaborated with her friend raj tolaram of raj
tolaram interiors to create a traditional style home infused with modern elements. the neutral décor beautifully
contrasts the punches of red brick and green flora that peak through the windows, an effect that’s enhanced by
the off-white oak floors at the upper stories. the top level, a 1920s addition, is a natural spot for entertaining
with its built-in wet bar and hollywood ties: actor harvey Keitel is said to have lived on this floor when it was an
apartment and dudley Moore stayed here during the filming of Arthur. in the front room, “passed life” by new
york-based artist drew tal combines photography and digital media to create a captivating conversation piece.
the restoration of the house became a labor of love for christina, who pored over design magazines and spent
hours finding just the right fabrics and furniture. her efforts clearly paid off in the gracious third floor master
suite. the bedroom provides a soothing symmetry capped by a custom-made louis XVi canopy bed while the
spacious bathroom is elegantly finished with light marble. Bird and floral window treatments in both rooms
provide a burst of color and playfully connect to the trees just outside the windows.
douglas and christina’s flair for entertaining extends to the parlor floor. Venetian plaster walls reflect the light
cast by ornate chandeliers and antique finish mirrors, and full-height French doors run the length of the rear wall
to bring the outside in. they invite guests down to the bluestone garden, which was designed by landscape
architect Mac carbonell of Verdant Gardens design.

LESLIE AND ROBERT RYLEE I 56 WEST 9TH STREET
As long-time admirers of this pristine Anglo-italianate brownstone townhouse, homeowners leslie and robert
rylee were thrilled to finally call it their own two years ago. they had previously lived at the adjacent no. 58,
which, along with this house and no. 54, was built as a row in 1853. the rylees, who moved in earlier this year,
were drawn to the house for their growing family and for the chance to design a house that suited them perfectly.
At just 17 ½ feet wide, the interior is surprisingly spacious thanks to the exceptional depth of the house as well
as leslie’s trained eye as a designer and parsons graduate.
A partner of GrF Group–a local architecture and design firm that specializes in designing “new old houses” using
traditional building techniques and salvaged materials–leslie and her partner worked with Amber
construction to bring back the stately character of the home which had been badly neglected. when the rylees
bought the house, the only original interior elements that remained were the casings, crown moldings and
mantels in the living room on the parlor floor, and the staircase.
different color schemes add dramatic presence to each room. the lime green lacquered paint and the plaster
crown in the dining room create a vibrant backdrop for the subdued antique furniture. two amusing portraits of
a married english couple over the buffet have been part of the rylee’s collection for over a decade. Just outside
the windows, a charming playhouse for the couple’s children sits at the end of the bluestone garden.
At the garden level, leslie and robert felt that moving the kitchen from the back to the front of the house made
more sense for their family. the couple is perhaps most thrilled with the kitchen table where they enjoy meals
with their children, something missing from their previous home. Grasscloth wall coverings and floors with
painted geometric patterns, seen elsewhere in the home, provide extra dimension to the space.
the family’s love of animals is clear throughout the house: the living room showcases a henri Maik painting of
zebra and deer and the library mantel holds a chinese horse, a gift from a friend. staying true to her mantra of
using salvaged materials to capture the grace of a bygone era, leslie meticulously pieced together a vintage 150piece Murano dandelion chandelier that now casts an intricate shadow on the library’s ceiling.

BARBARA SALOVICH & CARL PUCCI I 33 PERRY STREET
Architect carl pucci purchased this former commercial stable in 1982, attracted to the building’s rich history
and architectural detail. it has since served as his firm’s office space and a home for his growing family.
Built in 1897 for charles pearsall and designed by henry Andruss, Jr., the building features the arched openings,
decorative stonework, and deep roof cornice typical of the romanesque revival style. it originally housed wagons
on the first floor, a ‘runway’ ramp up to 28 horse stalls on the second, and a hoist to the third floor tack room.
no. 33 was converted to residential use in 1926. Architect harris V. hartman created the massive arched entry
door and new first floor window, laid out high-ceilinged apartments, and introduced the many extant arts and
crafts features—wrought iron work, tile and mosaic details, leaded glass and casement windows, and plaster reliefs.
carl designed the duplex apartment that he and Barbara currently occupy. on the main floor of the apartment,
Barbara’s concert grand piano fits easily into the gracious living space, scene of her frequent recitals. the large
1920s steel casement windows open to the neighboring gardens and stained glass panels of the nearby seventhday Adventist church. the original hoistway is now a book-lined archway and a salvaged fireplace mantel adds
further warmth.
the master bedroom, combined from two rooms, features a 1920s plaster relief over the fireplace, a modern
round interior window (after a louis sullivan design), and the original arched windows overlooking perry street.
the kids’ wing on the second floor mimics the original wood detailing with over-scaled cherry doors and
built-ins in the cozy tV area.
the cherry stair, carl’s design, leads up past a stained bottle glass window to the roof deck and Barbara’s
spectacular roof garden. wisteria and climbing roses cover the cedar- and aluminum-beamed pergola. seating
areas are scattered among flowering trees, hydrangea, Japanese pines, and whimsical statuary. the grill, basketball
hoop, and putting green complete the relaxed family oasis.
in the ground floor studio, carl and his staff work amongst wrought iron ornament, stained glass, and a grand
north facing garden window. As you exit, note the hand-painted entry ceiling and the transom’s wrought iron
“33” scrollwork.
“to find this kind of space in the Village is unexpected. it is wider, deeper and taller than typical townhouse
living,” says carl. “i believe true architecture ages well, enduring changing needs and lifestyles. this is a house
well lived in.”
