Lesson 2: Mitosis Virtual Lab Educator: Melissa Fisher Grade Level(s): 9th/10th Time: One period (40 minutes) Content/Problem: This lesson focuses on the Living Environment content of Reproduction, more specifically, mitosis, which is considered asexual reproduction. This lesson fits into the larger scope because it will teach how organisms’ cells are able to grow and reproduce. Living Environment Standard 4 K4: 4.1d The zygote may divide by mitosis and differentiate to form the specialized cells, tissues, and organs of multicellular organisms. Pedagogy Which Characteristics of Effective Instruction are you planning on targeting? þ Student Centered Classrooms þ Teaching for Understanding Assessment for Learning Rigorous and Relevant Curriculum Teaching for Learner Differences These characteristics were picked because the lesson will be focusing on a classroom that is mainly student-centered with student collaboration and critical thinking and will be teaching for understanding of the content using technology. This lesson closely follows Domains 1, 2 & 3, of the NYS Charlotte Danielson’s Framework for Teaching (2013). Technology What are the Technology Literacy areas you will be targeting within your lesson? Creativity and Innovation þ Communication and Collaboration Research and Information Fluency þ Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making Digital Citizenship þ Technology Operations and Concepts Technology will be used to communicate the content to the students and used by the students, which in turn will promote collaboration, critical thinking and decision-making when students are in small groups. This lesson closely follows standards 2, 4 & 6 of the ISTE (National Technology Standards). Essential Concepts and Skills What are the Essential Concepts and Skills that you will be specifically targeting? þ Learning and Innovation Skills þ Information, Media and Technology Skills Life and Career Skills This lesson will be focusing on learning, information, media, and technology skills. Students should know how to use a computer to conduct a virtual lab on mitosis, and use their knowledge to promote critical thinking and collaboration skills. Prior Knowledge Students will already know the stages of mitosis and know how to use a computer, while working effectively with their peers. Objectives Students will be able to effectively follow directions on conducting a virtual lab on the computer. Resources/Websites Materials: • Computer (laptop) with Internet access • Notebooks • Writing utensils Website: Mitosis Virtual Lab found at: http://glencoe.mheducation.com/sites/0078695104/student_view0/unit2/chapter9/virtual_labs.ht ml# Procedure • Students will use a computer in small groups to complete a virtual lab on mitosis. • When the lab is finished, students will answer some analysis questions in their notebooks. Assessment Students will share their lab analysis answers with the class.
