Describe the life cycle of a cell. __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ 2. Why is mitosis important? __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ 3. What is the result of mitosis? __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ 4. Why is it important for the chromosomes to be duplicated prior to cell division? __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ 5. Why is it important for the nuclear membrane to break down during the prophase stage of mitosis? __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ 6. What is the difference between mitosis and cytokinesis? __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ © Copyright NewPath Learning. How is mitosis in a plant cell different from mitosis in an animal cell? __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ Interactive Practice Activities: Virtual Lab Investigation: Comparing Mitosis in Plant and Animal Cells Overview In this virtual lab investigation, you will study the process of mitosis using the images of prepared slides of onion root tip and early whitefish embryo. These images show dividing cells in various stages of mitosis Problem How is mitosis in plant cells different from mitosis in an animal cell? Procedure: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Turn on the lamp of the microscope by clicking on it. Drag an onion root tip slide on to the microscope stage. Click on the eyepiece to view the slide. Click on the coarse and fine focus knobs to focus the image. Click on the microscope objectives on the lower left corner to change magnification. Focus again if necessary. Click and drag the slide around the field of view to examine it. Locate cells in various phases of mitosis. Draw and label a cell undergoing each phase of mitosis in a data table. Repeat steps 2-7 to examine additional slides of onion root tip until you have identified cells in each mitotic phase. Repeat procedure to examine and compare whitefish embryo cells undergoing mitosis to the onion root tip cells. © Copyright NewPath Learning. One of the three columns – term, description or illustration - is chosen at random. Use the buttons to move the other two columns until the correct cards are shown, then click to check your answer.
