UNIT DESCRIPTION
This unit provides students with the technical skills to design, develop and publish an interactive website or
interactive desktop based application (information kiosk, interactive screen-based installation work etc.) This is
done through the lecture-based presentation of technical examples that are supported by in-class exercises.
Students are taught how to employ current web-based standards such as HTML5 and CSS and introduced to
the possibilities of scripting for interactivity using JavaScript. This series of seminars also covers the specifics of
media preparation with lectures dedicated to image and video production for online delivery. Students apply the
knowledge gained in this unit to the design and development of their major project. !

On successful completion of this unit of study, students are expected to:
Design, build and implement a portfolio website.
Effectively evaluate and use a range of current web-based technologies to create creative
interactive works.
Effectively prepare a range of media for presentation in online and interactive environments.

The university allocates credit points (usually 6) to each unit of study in your degree program. 1 credit point is
approximately equal to a minimum of 1.5 to 2 hours of student effort (i.e. time spent engaged in activities related
to that unit of study) per week. In 6 Credit Points, this time is split between face-to-face time (for example, 2
hours), and independent study time (7 hours). (i.e. a total of 117-156 hours for the semester). You should regard
the outside class and personal study time allocations as a reasonable indication of the amount of time that is
expected for satisfactory performance in the unit of study; however you are encouraged to spend additional time
in order to perform at a higher standard.

PORTFOLIO WEBSITE
!
You are asked to design and build a portfolio website that will act as your online
presence at Sydney College of the Arts and beyond. The series of web pages
should contain details about your background and skills as well as provide space
that highlights the work you are doing in the Master of Interactive and Digital
Media degree along with previous creative work. As such, the site should be easy
to update and provide scope so that information, images and other elements can
be added as needed. The site is to be built using html and CSS layout.
Interactive functionality can be handled through JavaScript. The approach you
take for this project is totally up to you. You can hand code the entire site yourself
in a text editor or alternatively you can use Dreamweaver’s layout tools and
behaviours. Alternatively, you may wish to use a pre-existing CMS architecture
such as Wordpress for your site and customise the design,layout and interactivity
through the use of CSS & JavaScript.!

MAJOR PROJECT – INTERACTIVE WEBSITE/ APPLICATION

Description of task
For this project you are asked to design, build and implement a html/css3/
JavaScript interactive application. This can take the form of a complete website, a
standalone application, an experimental artwork or interface. The project is to be
built using html and CSS layout. Interactive functionality can be handled through
html5 & JavaScript. The approach you take for this project is totally up to you. You
can hand code the entire site yourself in a text editor or alternatively you can use
Dreamweaver’s layout tools and behaviours. Alternatively, you may wish to use a
pre-existing CMS architecture such as Wordpress for your site and customise the
design, layout and interactivity through the use of CSS & JavaScript.!

The development you undertake for this unit can be implemented as part of
another project. You are encouraged to develop your work for this unit as an
integrated part of your Major Project for MMDE5001. However, you can if you
choose develop a separate project. It is expected that you consult with your
academic advisor when choosing a topic and approach. It is asked that the
development of this project be accompanied by paper based plans and working
documents to be presented at assessment. Assessment for this assignment will
take place in Week 15 when you will present your work to an assessment panel.!

The final grade a student receives is based on the standard of his or her own performance across all the tasks
set for a unit. Assessment tasks are designed so students can demonstrate how well they have achieved a unit’s
outcomes.
