Includes photographs, manuscripts, news clippings, and audiovisual for the Presidium Shirley Pollock, recordings The Presidium: Sylvia Crasnick, Ruth Getzoff, Jo Kierman and Gloria Stone Brandeis University has acquired the personal papers of Lenny Bruce, the late comedian and free-speech advocate known for his biting, often obscenity-laced satirical commentary on American society. The collection, held by Bruce’s daughter, Kitty Bruce, includes photographs, manuscripts, news clippings, audiovisual recordings and other material. A generous gift from the Hugh M. Hefner Foundation made the acquisition possible. Sarah Shoemaker, associate university librarian for archives and special collections, says the papers and materials span approximately 10 linear feet and will require processing and review. They will become part of the Robert D. Farber Archives and Special Collections. “This is an exciting collection that touches on many subjects, including freedom of speech, censorship, social justice and Jewish humor, and it is a great fit for Brandeis,” says Shoemaker. “We are grateful to both Kitty Bruce and the Hugh M. Hefner Foundation for giving the collection a new home at Brandeis, where it will be available to researchers.” Bruce’s nightclub performances in the early 1960s resulted in his multiple arrests for obscenity, including once following a Greenwich Village show in 1964 that led to a trial in which he was convicted on obscenity charges. Bruce appealed the verdict but died of a drug overdose on Aug. 3, 1966, before the appeal could be heard. In 2003, New York Gov. George E. Pataki pardoned Bruce posthumously, making the trial a landmark freedom of speech case. It was the first such pardon in New York’s history, and Pataki called it “a declaration of New York’s commitment to upholding the First Amendment.” Brandeis will host a retrospective on Bruce and his life in 2016, 50 years after his death. 2 Co-Chairman Bernie Schneier Bernie Schiffer Presidium: Sylvia Crasnick 310.553.8899 scrasnick@gmail.com Treasurer Bob Margolis Ruth Getzoff 310.470.1017 rgetzoff@verizon.net Secretary Louis Bernstein Interest Groups Ron Zane, Al Schwartz Jo Kierman 310.271.2667 or 323.933.2668 F Trips Al Wilner Gloria Stone 310.801.4711 or 310.277.3259 gloria.stone@sbcglobal.net Shirley Pollock, Advisor 310.659.8883 shrlmar@roadrunner.com Newsletter Richard Cohn Telephone Alan Gottschalk Vice Presidents: Book Fund: Dania Khandaker (Folios, LRJs,Collections) dkhandaker@brandeis.edu Beverley Wiener (Tribute Cards) 818.386.0134 grandmabeverley@gmail.com Membership: Joan Satt 310.657.8257 jsrecycle@sbcglobal.net Beverley Wiener 818.386.0134 grandmabeverley@gmail.com Special Interest Trips: TBA Study Groups: Rehla Schneier (Book Groups) 310.827.4930 bschneier@yahoo.com IN THIS ISSUE: 1 2 Fund Raising Irv Kierman David Kavner SAVE THE DATE HOLIDAY ODYSSEY & UNIVERSITY ON WHEELS PRESIDIUM MESSAGE LENNY BRUCE Membership Lou Bernstein Steering Committee Louis Bernstein Abe Cohen Richard Cohn Harvey Ganz Arnie Geffner Al Gomer Murray Gomer Alan Gottschalk Dick Harmetz John Harris Harold Igdaloff David Kavner Irv Kierman Bob Margolis Bernie Pollack Gerry Sallus Harold Savinar Bernie Schiffer Bernie Schneider Al Schwartz Sam Shaffer Leon Vallens Al Wilner Ron Zane 3 LIST OF OFFICERS AND UPDATE INDEX 4 INSTALLATION PHOTOS THEATRE 40 PHOTOS 5 BRANDEIS NEWS 6 SUSTAINING THE MIND & STUDY GROUPS/MENS GROUP 7 BOOK FUND TRIBUTES 8 CALENDAR OF EVENTS T H E U P D AT E Jean Cohen (Current Issues) 310.397.6209 jcohenlwv@aol.com IS THE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE Cookie Rosenbaum (Film) 310.553.1336 Cookiemom25@yahoo.com BRANDEIS NATIONAL COMMITTEE, LOS ANGELES Secretaries: Marilyn Rouse (Corresponding) 310.860.0733 rou35@aol.com WEBSITE: WWW.BNCLA.ORG Roberta Kampner (Financial) 310.277.6322 ducksgalor@sbcglobal.net UPDATE EDITOR: Shirley Pollock Jave Tripp Esther Cooperband (Recording) 310.393.6168 estherrc@yahoo.com Treasurer: Flossy Liebman 310.824.4126 grammyflos@aol.com TABLE OF CONTENTS Brandeis Men's Group LA OFFICERS FOR 2013 - 2014: PROOFREADERS: Ruth Getzoff Sylvia Crasnick Beverley Wiener SEPTEMBER - NOVEMBER 2014 | BRANDEIS UPDATE | 3 Installation at Bagel Brunch THEATRE 40 4 Decoding sleep, mapping quasars: A day in the life of undergraduate scientists By Leah BurrowsAug. 4, 2014 Abby Knecht gets into the lab around 9 a.m. She chats with her colleagues, catches up on recent scientific journals and preps the Total Internal Reflection Fluorescence microscope for her single molecule experiments on DNA transcription. It’s a typical summer morning for many graduate students across the country, except Knecht ’15 isn’t in graduate school — she is one of dozens of Brandeis University undergraduates who’s traded white beaches for white lab coats to work alongside faculty, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows researching epilepsy, mapping quasars, decoding sleep cycles and uncovering the chemical mysteries of cell differentiation. Knecht and her fellow student-scientists are designing research projects and writing research papers for publication with some of the university’s most distinguished scientists. “I really feel like I am treated like a graduate student,” says Knecht, who works with Jeff Gelles, the Aron and Imre Tauber Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Pharmacology. “As an undergrad, I am treated with respect, and I am free to work on my own experiments.” “I often give my most speculative projects — those with the highest risk and highest reward — to undergraduates,” says physics professor Seth Fraden, PhD’87. “These undergraduates often surprise me by finding creative solutions. My lab’s two current research tracks, protein crystallization and Turing’s chemical basis of morphogenesis, were both started by undergraduates.” July culminates in the annual SciFest, where student-scientists present their research to faculty and peers. This year, 86 students, including 64 Brandeis undergraduates and 21 summer visitors from around the world, presented their research in the sunny lobby of the Carl A. Shapiro Science Center. Funding for undergraduate research comes from many sources, including the Provost’s Undergraduate Research Fund; the Jerome A. Schiff Undergraduate Fellows Program; the Division of Science Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships; the National Science Foundation; the National Institutes of Health, and the Materials Research Science and Engineering Center Research Experience for Undergraduates. “Working on pioneering research alongside grad students and postdocs gives undergraduates a chance to see what a life of research is really like, and it challenges their imaginations,” says Jim Haber, professor of biology and director of the Rosenstiel Basic Medical Sciences Research Center. Time in the lab is transformative. “You can’t really learn something until you have to do it yourself. I see things that I’ve learned in biology class every day in the lab,” says Adam Jones ’15, who spent the summer in professor Michael Rosbash’s lab. “I’m more excited about research now than I’ve ever been.” Three Brandeis University students recently presented research findings on nail salon air quality at the 2014 International Conference on Environmental Science and Technology in Houston. Margaret Back ’16, Morgan Dashko ’15 and Tasneem Islam ’15 reported that workers in 15 nail salons in the Greater Boston area were exposed to high levels of harmful chemicals which are common in nail polishes, polish removers and acrylic and gel nails. The students’ findings were from a study they conducted with colleagues in Professor Laura Goldin’s Environmental Health and Justice Program, which is offered through the Justice Brandeis Semester (JBS). The Justice Brandeis Semester program is part of Brandeis’ commitment to creating and supporting intensive learning experiences with enduring impact, a central goal of the university’s strategic plan.
