NURSING ASSISTANT / HOME CARE AIDE Nursing Assistant / Home Care Aide PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The Nursing Assistant Home Care Aide program focuses on safe and effective performance by the student in providing care in the home and/or in a health care setting. Emphasis is placed on in-home (personal care) and nursing assistant duties. Concepts pertaining to the psychosocial aspect of care giving are covered along with Anatomy and Physiology, Medical Terminology, and how to perform specific skills such as bed making, patient bathing, hygiene techniques, and body mechanics in a health care setting. The program also covers theory and practice of skills for home care settings. This includes in-home environmental and patient safety, the delivery of personal care, patient mobility, and the proper use of assistive equipment such as wheelchairs and lifters. Home care skills are practiced in a home / apartment laboratory setting to allow hands-on experience for students to develop proficiency in home care skills. Required clinical hours for nursing assistants are spent in a longterm care setting providing hands-on care to residents. The curriculum has been developed in accordance with the Health Care Finance Administration under the OBRA 1987 Guidelines. The course is coordinated and instructed by a Registered Nurse.
