In his article, drawing from the Montreal School theory of coorientation, Koschmann reconceptualises ‘collective identity’ “from a communication perspective by theorizing it as an authoritative text that emerges from the text-conversation dialectics of coorientation and is facilitated by communication process of intertextuality and distanciation.” Analyzing and interpreting data gathered from field observations and in-depth interviews, Koschmann shows how collective identity “emerges from communication processes that comprise organizational forms and are central to their existence.” The members of the selection committee were Dan Lair (Chair), Jennifer Gibbs, and Debbie S. Dougherty. The committee commented, “… we found Koschmann’s article to make significant contributions to our understanding of how the CCO perspective can inform the study of collective identities and of the importance of such identities in enhancing the efficacy of interorganizational collaborations. As such collaborative efforts are likely to become increasingly prevalent in an era marked by diminishing resources, Koschmann’s article is well-positioned to make enduring and significant contributions to the field.” Management Communication Quarterly | About The Journal | The Editorial Board | Manuscript Submission Newsletter 通 訊 • Aug 2014 Home MCQ Notes MCQ’s current average time from submission to first decision is 69 days. Featured Articles from our May 2014: 28(2) issue Building Blocks of Individual Biography? Non-Governmental Organizational Communication in Reflexive Modernity — ANDREAS MYNSTER AND LEE EDWARDS In this article, the authors used rhetorical analysis to illustrate how communication within a non-governmental organization (Amnesty International Denmark or AID) “simultaneously serves organizational self-interest and provides a set of symbolic tools for individuals to use in the process of constructing biographical certainty.” Analyzing the quarterly magazines and ‘letters of appeal’ sent to members, subscribers, and supporters, the authors concluded that, “AID’s member communication constructs a view of the world centered on moral binaries and invites members to identify with the moral position that AID represents.” ... cont. next page Management Communication Quarterly | About The Journal | The Editorial Board | Manuscript Submission 2 Newsletter 通 訊 • Aug 2014 Home Leader-Member Conversation Quality (LMCQ): Scale Development and Validation through Three Studies — GUOWEI JIAN, XIAOWEI SHI AND FRANCIS DALISAY In this article, the authors developed and validated a Leader-Member Conversational Quality (LMCQ) scale to measure the quality of conversations between leaders and members in the workplace. By using the theoretical construct of interactional richness to conceptualize LMCQ and conducting a series of three studies, the authors created a nine-item instrument with the ability to assess conversation practices quantitatively. The LMCQ provides researchers with a measurement instrument that is “theoretically grounded and taps into the leader-member communication exchange.” The authors assert that the LMCQ would also enable the assessor “to propose concrete suggestions for changes necessary in improving conversational practice.” The Current Issue Articles Building Blocks of Individual Biography?
