OLIN RESEARCH POOL
Guidelines for STUDENTS/PARTICIPANTS
In order to increase student exposure to research, the Olin School requires the students
taking introductory courses in Marketing (MKT 370), OB (OB 360), and Strategy (MGT
100) to complete 3 hours of research over the course of the semester. Understanding
and participating in research is a valuable way for you to receive first-hand experience
with academic research. In addition, your involvement in research will help faculty and
graduate students at Olin continue to develop state-of-the-art marketing thought, which
is ultimately brought back into the classroom.
You can earn your 3 hours of credit by participating in 3 hours (or 6 half-hours) of
research studies. Your 3 hours of participation will be worth 3% of your class grade.
Study availability and signup is available at http://researchpool.olin.wustl.edu (students
can participate in any study, but only once per study). Studies end the last week of
classes.

FAQ’s and More Details
Where do I sign up for studies? How will I know my login/password?
• Go the Research Pool website: http://researchpool.olin.wustl.edu
•
A username and password will automatically be e-mailed to your wustl account at
beginning of semester. If you did not receive this information, please contact
researchadministrator@olin.wustl.edu
How/When do I sign-up for studies?
• Studies are spread throughout the semester, but we strongly recommend you sign up as
soon as you can to make sure you receive your credits. Those that wait until the end of
the semester may find they are out of luck.
How many studies can I participate in?
 You need to complete 3 hours of research for each of the following classes in which you
are enrolled: Management 100, Marketing 370, and OB 360. Most studies are 30
minutes long, but some are 60 minutes long. You can participate in any study you like,
you may NOT participate in the same study twice.
How will my instructor know I participated?
 No worries. We’ll take care of that. The list of students who participated will be given to
the instructors at the end of the semester – so make sure to write your name correctly
and follow all the instructions. Also note that you need to complete a FULL TWO hours
of research to be able to fulfill the research requirement. You can check the Research
Pool website after you have completed the study to make sure you earned your credit
8/2010
and whether you need to participate in further studies. Credits are posted within a few
days of completion.
What if I am in multiple classes that require research participation?
 You only need to complete 3 hours of research for the entire semester. That is, if you are
taking both Marketing and OB this semester, you will only need to complete a total of 3
hours of research requirement.
What if I don’t show up to my reservation?
 You can miss 1 study with no penalty. If you fail to show up for a second time, you may
not be allowed to participate in future studies. However, you can cancel your reservation
at anytime. If you cannot make the time you signed up for, then we ask that you
CANCEL your reservation at least 24 HOURS before to avoid being penalized. You can
cancel the reservation on the same website that you signed up for the study. Note that
being significantly tardy to a session may end up meaning the same as not showing up.
What are my other options for receiving credit?
a. Participate in three (3) hours of research-related activities (data collection, proof-reading a
manuscript, or entering and analyzing data), with a faculty member whom they identify and
get written approval by the 5th week of class. This research work should be completed 30
days before the last day of class. Students should not receive pay for these three hours.
OR
b. Critique three (3) research papers and writing a 4-page report that will be evaluated as
satisfactory/unsatisfactory by faculty. These papers (and the evaluating faculty) are listed at
the website below. Students are required to have contacted the evaluating faculty and
received approval to participate in this research critique before the midterm. The report is due
30 days before the last day of class. Details on papers that can be critiqued can be found on
the following link: For information about papers, go to this link:

Who do I contact with questions?
 Email the research administrator researchadministrator@olin.wustl.edu for general and
technical questions.
 For questions about individual studies, e-mail the researcher directly
 For other concerns, e-mail the faculty supervisor, Prof. Steve Nowlis at
