Course Description
There’s more to creating a Web site than writing HTML code and uploading files. A good Web site
must be designed before it can be created. This one-semester Fundamentals of Web
Development course is structured to introduce students to both Web site design and
development. The course will introduce students to the basic Web site design principles. Students
will use these principles to design and evaluate their own sites and to evaluate other sites.
Students will learn development languages such HTML and CSS. In addition, students will be
introduced to two software programs: GIMP, an image-editing program, and Nvu, a Web
development program.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
• perform an audience analysis in order to successfully design a Web site
• take into account the appropriate Web design considerations in order to successfully
design a Web site
• use basic HTML to create a simple Web page
• define and differentiate between the various types of Web-compatible images
• describe the major copyright concerns regarding image use on the Web
• use GIMP to create and save a graphic
Unit 1: Site Design and Planning (Weeks 1-2)
This unit will introduce you to the basic Web site design principles. You can use these principles
to both design and evaluate your own sites and to evaluate other sites. The unit will also cover
concepts such as site architecture and navigation.

This unit covers the factors to consider when using graphics and photographs online, including
the types and sizes of images that can be used online. The unit also discusses copyright laws in

source, image-editing software program.
