Christmas is the time of year when we send messages of love, best wishes and gifts of happiness. Our family and friends are an important part of our life.
Christmas is a time when family and friends get together to get caught up on events from the past year. For some of us, it is a sacred time.
I have been thinking that we should interview our members so they can relate what Christmas was like for their family in the years past. That may be a project for next year.
Another project for 2015 may include composing a “SEESA Song”.
November was a busy month at SEESA.
We held a remembrance service, a successful fundraising gala, Drama Club shows, and a Memorial Celebration for our deceased members . Family members always appreciate this remembrance for our late members and their families. The Christmas tree is set up in the cafeteria. The stars represent our deceased members and were placed there by their families. Please take a minute to read the names on the stars.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish SEESA staff, the SEESA Board and SEESA members a happy holiday season that is fun and festive.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
2015 - friends!

Drop in fees increase for the first time since 1980! Yes it is true! Effective
January 1, 2015 drop in fees will be
$2.00/visit. Most people I speak to about this say, “it’s about time!” In the past 35 years class fees have more than doubled as well as the costs of utilities and supplies. Yes, it is about time. If this increase is substantial enough to prevent you from attending a club please see me in confidence. We can make arrangements for you.
We now accept VISA/MC and Debit at the front desk. There are restrictions:
1. A minimum purchase of $30.00
2. No cash back option
3. Phone-in credit card orders are subject to an additional user fee of
$2.
Phone-in registration for classes and tickets will be available the day following in-person program registration or sale.
To all of our members, on behalf of the staff of SEESA, we wish you all the warm and wonderful things that make a Merry Christmas. Thank you for your support, your hours of work, your answer to the “call of duty”; our volunteers continue to be SEESA’s greatest gift.
“Diamond Delight” quilt winner, Nadia Drozdiak, just happened to be celebrating her 80th birthday on the very day her winning ticket was pulled. What a fantastic

Christmas can be a very lonely time so in lieu of handy man tips here are some suggestions to avoid the Christmas Blues:
1. Volunteer Mustard Seed Church, Hope
Mission, Salvation Army all run programs through Christmas and are always looking for volunteers.
2. Accept Invitations - When people invite you to a function - say yes!
3. Enjoy Solitude - Prepare for a “you” day, get a haircut, a manicure, a new outfit.
Plan a movie marathon, prepare your favourite meal - Celebrate you!
4. Host an Orphan Christmas - even though you are alone, you are not alone.
MANY people have no one to celebrate with. Invite them to dinner!
5. Work - Offer to work the holiday shift.
6. Host an Online Christmas set up a
Skype chatroom or a Facebook group.
7. Take Time to appreciate what you do, and what you have. This is a good time to make a gratitude box.
8. Look Forward – Plan for a better future.
Make a list of things you want to change for next year and thoughts on how you are going to achieve those goals.
9. Mind Over Matter - If you are feeling overwhelmed, imagine what you would feel and look like if you could cope - you have more power than you think .
10.
Reach Out - If you are feeling down call someone. If you have no one try 211 or
780 482 4357.
If you need some help preparing for the holiday season - Let us know.

They are also considering other demo activities.
If you are interested contact Celeste for more information.
Commissioner of Oaths service is free for current SEESA members; for non-members a contribution to SEESA is appreciated. This is not a drop-in service - an appointment is required.

Greetings to all,
Christmas can be a lonely time. At the present time, we have volunteer opportunities if you would like to make a positive difference in a senior’s life. The
Friendly Home Visit is a great way to meet and socialize with an isolated senior. Also, our phone buddy volunteers can enjoy a phone conversation with isolated seniors from their own home and may check on them once a week. For more information please contact Sherr or Phil.
With a growing aging population in Alberta,
SEESA Outreach is adapting to seniors’ changing needs to live healthier and independently in their community. Outreach provides the following services to any senior who may need assistance: with government forms, personal sessions and advocacy.
Furthermore, we help decrease isolation through facilitating support groups such as
Social Circle, Shop Talk, and Seniors Insight
Group. Services are available to SEESA members, as well as non-members within our geographic boundaries, at no cost.
If you have any questions in these areas , please contact Celeste, Phil or 211.
Happy holiday to you and your family!

McDougall United Church has been a cornerstone in our city for over 100 years. From the curved hardwood pews and massive pipe organ to stained glass windows and towering brick pilasters,
McDougall still breathes with the sprit of fine craftsmanship. Among the church's historical treasures is a century-old walnut pulpit crafted by
Reverend McDougall. Amidst the splendour of the poinsettias, Christmas trees and lights, McDougall
Church offers Christmas carols, a featured musical artist, hot apple cider, cookies, and coffee from
Starbucks at this noon hour concert. The concert is free; however, if you wish you may donate to the
School Lunch Program run by E4C.
Lunch: We’ll walk next door and enjoy a holiday lunch buffet at La Ronde restaurant, located on the
24th floor. Revolving once every 88 minutes, you’ll be treated to an unmatched view of Edmonton.
Some of the items included in this festive feast include Eggnog, Carved Turkey and bread pudding with rum sauce.

At the Grey Matters Conference in Red Deer recently I attended a session from Alberta
Health Care Services that introduced a guide for making health care decisions during the
Palliative Care and End of Life phase of our life.
Why would we need this? The bad news is that
70% of us will reach a time when we are unable to communicate our own wishes.
Conversely, the good news is we can make our wishes known, communicate and document them now so that this information is available to the healthcare team when and if it is needed.
The information consists of a medical assessment done when you enter the health care system and recording your wishes with respect to treatment, care and housing. The information is stored in a green, plastic envelope called the Green Sleeve that will remain with you and accompany you as you move within the Health Care System. The
Green Sleeve documents are fluid and can be changed if your condition and choices change.
What do you need to do? You need to reflect on your wishes and values. For example, what do you expect from health care; what are your views on prolonging life; how would you define quality of life. You need to talk about your wishes and values to a trusted person: family member, spouse, partner or friend, in a number of conversations.
Finally you need to document your wishes.
Complete a Personal Care Directive that names the person or persons you have chosen to speak on your behalf and store everything in your
Green Sleeve. When it becomes necessary this material and this person will direct the Health
Care team to carry out your wishes.
