We've produced some of the most storied companies in telecommunications that, in turn, have provided the leadership to shape the wireless industry around the globe. Bell-Northern Research From its beginnings in the 1800s as a part of the Bell system, BNR grew into an innovation powerhouse that would continue to make telecommunications history for more than a century. Among its accomplishments was Digital World introduced in 1976 as the world's first complete line of fully digital telecom systems. BNR went on to fuel the innovations of the celebrated Nortel Networks. Nortel Also tracing its history to the 19th century as Northern Electric and Manufacturing, Nortel grew to represent Ottawa's best and brightest. The company grew steadily, building on major successes such as the world's longest microwave system and the Contempra, or Princess telephone, whose handset dial influenced telecommunications products around the world. The world's first all-digital switch, the SL-1 PBX, gave Nortel a jump-start for other innovations - North America's first cellular telephone system which gave subscribers features such as call forwarding, call waiting and three-way calling; and the first live-test calls to use a commercial handset for the emerging broadband wireless technology, HSDPA. Nortel's ongoing spirit of innovation, coupled with its agility in responding to an ever-changing world, speak to the strengths of the Ottawa-based workforce that were at the heart of many of Nortel's historic commercial advances. Mitel Mitel's Ottawa founders Mike Cowpland and Terry Matthews were among the first to recognize how new microprocessors could change the way office telephone equipment was built. Mitel introduced the SX200 PBX to astonishing success and went on to build a ubiquitous presence in the PBX market place. Newbridge Networks Terry Matthews founded Newbridge after Mitel to create data and voice networking products. Matthews foresaw that data networking would grow far faster than voice networking and he wanted to capitalize on the trend. Newbridge quickly became a major player in this market by tapping into Ottawa's expertise in voice switching and software engineering. National Research Council Created in 1916 as the Honorary Advisory Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, the NRC has supported ground breaking research in Ottawa and across Canada for nearly a century. The NRC's cutting edge research and collaboration with industry have led to the development of the artificial pacemaker, the atomic clock, and the International Space Station's Canadarm. With its international partners, the NRC has supported other key advances in radar, atomic fission and defense technologies.
