Course Description Two Dimensional Design explores the creation and use of the elements and principles of design as applied to visual communication. Traditional and contemporary tools of design are introduced as students work through a variety of visual design projects. Conceptual development and creativity are emphasized. This course is designed to prepare students for intermediate-‐level visual arts courses in both transfer and career programs in art, design, and interactive media. • Three credits • Three lecture hours per week • ENGL 052, RDNG 051 to RDNG 052, and ESOL 052 and ESOL 054, or permission from Program Coordinator.
Course Objectives Upon successful completion of the course the student should be able to: 1. Define and identify basic design terms; 2. Apply the stages of the design process to his/her approach to design problem-‐solving; 3. Use elements and principles of design in the production of images that convey the intended message; 4. Identify and produce examples of figure ground relationships; illusionism, spatial ambiguity, and equivocal space; 5. Identify and produce value transitions and shape transitions from 2-‐D to 3-‐D illusion; 6. Produce accidental textures and shapes, and employ them in construction of specific effects; 7. Redesign a representational or realistic image by stylization and abstraction; 8. Arrange dissimilar elements to create a sense of unity; 9. Identify and describe careers in the field; 10. Identify major styles of design and identify and use sources to further explore; 11. Explore the use of icon, symbol, and sign; 12. Identify and collect professional examples of concepts; 13. Develop critical skills in evaluating the effectiveness of design, composition, and communication. 14. Originate and maintain a portfolio Points and Evaluation •

Studio Projects Design samples Portfolio Participation = = = = 600 points 200 points 100 points 100 points TOTAL POINTS POSSIBLE = 1000 points Students will be held responsible for knowing and using professional design protocol and the techniques demonstrated in class. Attendance & Participation Policy Attendance is mandatory at all class sessions. Excused absences will only be permitted when prior permission is obtained from the professor, or in cases of extreme emergency (illness, death in the family, etc.) See the attendance policy below. Three unexcused, late arrivals (more than 15 minutes) will be counted as 1 unexcused absence. Students are expected to come to class on time and prepared to work. If the student has an extenuating circumstance that will cause him or her to be late on a regular basis, the situation should be discussed with the instructor at the beginning of the semester. The instructor will not repeat material missed by students arriving late (this includes quizzes and/or exams). If the student knows they will miss a class session, he or she should make a reasonable effort to contact the instructor in advance. If a student should miss the equivalent of two (2) weeks of class their final grade will be lowered by one letter and they must schedule a conference with the instructor to review their performance. If a student should miss the equivalent of three (3) weeks of class they will receive written notification by the instructor that they will not successfully complete the course. Students will begin the semester with one hundred (100) Participation points. These points will neither increase nor will students have the opportunity to add to this point total. Students should immediately realize that one of their goals for the course should be to keep this point total where it begins through active class participation, punctuality, and devotion to their studies. Points may be lost through such events as class tardiness, improper class preparedness, and/or exiting class early. Students cannot be charged more than ten (10) points per class. Absence Policy When absent from class it is the student’s responsibility to follow up on any missed work, including obtaining any missed information from lectures, demonstrations, or assignment details. If an absence does occur, it in no way negates the student’s responsibilities for the following classes, including specific deadlines. Please keep in mind that lectures, demonstrations, and assignment details will not be repeated unless deemed appropriate by the instructor. If the student knows they will miss a class session, he or she should make a reasonable effort to contact the instructor in advance through email, phone, or during office hours on campus. Excused absences include illness or family emergency. All other absences are unexcused. Any work submitted past a deadline, due to an absence, must be accompanied by a late submission form. This form in no way excuses any late work nor assumes late work is unexcused – this is determined by the instructor and college policy after discussion with the student. Archiving Policy Students should maintain an archive of all sketches and projects – digital and non-‐digital. It is the students’ responsibility to keep all items in the digital archive backed-‐up in a timely manner. Neither the instructor nor the college can be held responsible for students’ loss of work due to poor archiving procedures. Also, the instructor will not excuse any work deadlines due to poor archiving procedures. Students must maintain back-‐up copies on removable media. Cancellation Policy College closings and cancellations are posted on the college website (www.ccbcmd.edu) at the bottom there is a link for closings, as well as through the campus alert system which will notify you via text message or email in the event of a closing. The official CCBC snow policy states if the college has a delayed opening, then classes resume at the time the college opens (e.g. If a class is scheduled from 9am – 1pm, and the college opens late at 10am, you will be expected at your class at 10am for the portion of class time remaining). It is your responsibility to check on the status of delays/cancellations and attend class accordingly. Studio Projects Studio project details will be handed out during regular class times, and posted online (URL on first page of syllabus). Most studio projects will be started in class and must be completed on the student’s own time outside of class. When course time is devoted to projects it will be announced the class prior and via the course calendar. Project deadlines are on the course calendar and will also be posted online. Projects may be submitted late if accompanied with a late form. All unexcused late assignments will be marked 10% lower per week. Assignments turned in late without a form will not be accepted. Forms can be obtained from the instructor. Design Samples Design samples will be assigned, collected, and submitted digitally via the web using a Blogger blog. The blog URL is 2d-‐
design-‐2011.blogspot.com. Students will link to images and websites of art and design via the the blog to share and review their design samples. Requirements and further details will be provided on a separate instruction sheet. You will be required to join Blogger (free) to contribute and submit your samples.
