W
elcome to the 33rd edition of Corvettes at
Carlisle! My father, Chip Miller, started this
event because of his passion for Corvettes. I’m
fortunate to be able to follow in his footsteps
and continue following my passion. Corvettes at
Carlisle is all about having a FUN time, meeting
new people and, of course, being surrounded
LANCE MILLER
by incredible cars. We realize there are a lot
of choices where to spend your time each weekend and we’re
thankful you chose Carlisle, PA as your destination for this Corvette
extravaganza.
The Carlisle Events team and I put forth a lot of effort to ensure
you enjoy your visit with us. In fact, our ultimate goal is to have you
go home with a big smile and hopefully help us spread the word
about this fun-filled event with your family and friends.
During your visit I highly recommend that you visit our huge
vendor area; you’ll be blown away with the Corvette items for sale.
Not to mention the knowledge the vendors have. If you’ve got
questions, ask them!
The Manufactures Midway showcases some of the industries
latest and greatest trends, be sure to check it out! While visiting the
Midway; be sure to stop by the Team Chevrolet Tent where you can
speak with the people that built the car we’ve all fallen in love with.
Chip’s Choice, NCRS Gallery, NCCC Concours, ’65 Reunion and the
incredible American Flag Display are other features I encourage you
to check out.
If you need assistance, please reach out to any of our team
members and we’ll be happy to help you. If you feel we can improve,
please be sure to let us know. We’re always trying to make each of
our events better, and the only way to do this is by listening to your
feedback. Again, thank you for joining us and have an phenomenal
visit! Mark your calendars for August 26-28, 2016 so you can join us
for the next Corvettes at Carlisle!
I’d love to hear from you! Send an email or call me at:

I
t’s funny looking back to our
childhood. For instance I recall
when I was sitting in study
hall for the final 45 minutes
of the day during junior and
senior years of high school just
watching the clock slowly tick.
Time just couldn’t go quickly
enough as I couldn’t wait to get
out of school so I could enjoy
my hobbies with my friends.
Fast forward MANY years…
now I can’t believe how quickly
time flies! I feel as though I was
just writing last year’s Lance’s
Corner!
We often hear “time flies
when you’re having fun” – this
stands true! I’m fortunate to
love what I do, and after work
I’m eager to go home and enjoy
my much needed family time
too. Time has a way of never
slowing down. The Carlisle
Events’ team puts forth so much
work for each of our events and
Corvettes at Carlisle is a heavy
focus for us. We work hard all
year to make sure our events
are the best that they can be, but
we realize there’s always room
for improvement. On that note,
I’d like to ask for your help. If
you can take a minute to visit
our website, carlisleevents.
com, and take our survey to
better help us make Corvettes at
Carlisle a better place, we’d love
to hear from you. We’re always
seeking new ideas and we love
your feedback; it’s important to
ensure our success.
Since my daughter Ella was
born, I always enjoy putting a
picture in the event magazine
with her. I’ll continue to stick
with this theme because I firmly
believe that the car hobby is
one big family. Ella is a big part
of it for me! She’s getting more
mature by the day, in fact she’s
enjoying speed more and more
by the day too (shhh… don’t tell
Mom!). I cherish every minute
Ella and my wife, Michele, have
together and I’m thankful for
how fortunate I am. We are
always seeking ways to get
children interested in automobiles; if you have ideas, please
send them my way!
The Americana theme
is tough to beat, but in 2016
we’re going to feature the 20th
anniversary for the ’96 Grand
Sports! This group is always a
blast to hang out with; be sure
to stop by and say hello – you’ll
know exactly what I’m talking
about. We’re also going to
feature the 50th Anniversary
of the ’66 Corvette. This will
be another incredible display
of cars that you won’t want to
miss.
Sadly Corvette legend
John Greenwood recently
passed away at the age of 71.
In his honor we will feature
Greenwood Corvettes for the
2016 Chip’s Choice Display.
Expect to see some amazing
wide-body Greenwood
Corvettes that have become
famous over the years. John
will rest in peace, but his cars
will continue to live on for
generations. If you’ve got a
Greenwood Corvette, please
sand an email to LanceM@
carlisleevents.com.
Two years down the road
in 2017 Chip’s Choice is going
to be spectacular as well; we’re
going to focus on the holy grail
of Corvette engines… the L88!
Considering the first 427ci L88
Corvette was sold to the public
in 1967, we thought it would be
appropriate to focus on these
engines and cars for their 50th
Anniversary! Many folks in the
Corvette hobby haven’t had the
opportunity to see an ultra-high
performance Corvette equipped
with the 427CI L88 Corvette
in person; we’ll change that
in 2017! Expect to see some
phenomenal and extremely
rare and expensive L88 Corvette
examples. Our goal is to have
a nice variety of L88 Corvettes
from race theme to stock. The
Corvette code “L88” could only
be ordered through GM from
1967 to 1969, but the development of the L88 was called “427
Heavy Duty” or “HD” but it was
considered the L88 engine as
the program progressed.
In 2017 we’ll be thrilled to
focus heavily on the incredible end-to-an-era-Corvette,
the 1967! Expect to see the very
best of the best on display; we
wouldn’t settle for anything
less. If you have ideas on what
you’d like to see, let us know!
After all, this event is being
hosted for you. Thank you in
advance, we appreciate your
support.

Corvette American
Flag Presentation,
Swearing-In
Ceremony &
Veteran’s Tribute
and Parade
By presidential proclamation and
acts of Congress there are many
locations where the American
Flag is permanently displayed.
It is a glorious American icon
that includes 13 red and white
alternating stripes that represent
the original 13 colonies. The
white stripes signify purity and
innocence and the red signify
bravery and valor. The 50 stars,
representing states, sit on a blue
field that represents vigilance,
perseverance and justice.
For over 200 years our flag
has symbolized the unity and
strength of our country. It is a
source of inspiration and pride
and has become the single-most
viable icon in our nation’s history.
We are celebrating this great
icon by pairing it with another
American icon – the Corvette.
We will create an American Flag
with nearly 200 Corvettes on
Friday.
Join us at the Grandstand
on Friday at 2 p.m.
The ceremony includes
special guest speakers
and a parade you won’t
want to miss!

Diagnostics
Due to overwhelming demand from
Corvette owners, Carlisle is happy

conduct weekend-long seminars and
diagnostic sessions in the Corvette
Mechanic Tent. Watch Paul Koerner
and Brittany George professionally
advise Corvette owners on their
Corvettes throughout the weekend.
Have an issue with your Corvette?
You can schedule a 15- to 30-minute
diagnostic session on your own car.

quickly, so don’t delay. (Diagnostic
sessions are free but a donation to

Experience the Thrill of a Lifetime
What could be better than a relaxing
three-day stay at a resort in western
Nevada? How about the ability to
drop the hammer and take a Corvette
onto a race course with instruction
by professional drivers? You can do
that if you are the lucky winner of
this weekend’s giveaway.* One (1)
person will be awarded a $500 Visa
gift card, given the chance to spend
three nights at the Spring Mountain
Motor Resort and Country Club in
Pahrump, Nevada and have access
to the Level 1 Ron Fellow’s Performance Driving School.
Call it High Speed 101 if you’d
like, but this Level 1 deal is really
open to drivers of all skill sets. If you
want to know what you’ll experience,
keep reading…because you’ll be in
for the experience of a lifetime if you
win this prize.
First, what are you driving? How about the all new C7 Stingray Corvette. It won’t be a
basic C7 either as it comes with the Z51 option package.
What about the sessions? The Level 1 driving school is as much educational as it is
hands-on fun. The curriculum focuses on developing your car control skills and performance driving techniques. And, so you don’t feel alone or lost, there is a two-way radio.
This keeps you in constant contact with the instructor.
It’s one thing to drive fast on a dry surface, but what about wet roads? This curriculum also includes dynamic car control exercises for wet surfaces, handling on oval
courses versus road courses, and helps improve your driving skills visually. After all,
you need to see what’s in front of you at all times as well as what is beside and behind
you too. There is instruction on cornering and you’ll get to lead and follow the instructor
while also getting open track time.
Mind-speed and decision-making are key elements in the high performance world.
All car control exercises and on-track training will help you improve your ability to
process information quickly and accurately, resulting in a better coordination of eyes,
hands and feet as well as improved speed and accuracy.
When you are done with the R&R&R (rest, relaxation and racing), you’ll find yourself
a more knowledgeable and confident performance driver.
*Approximate Retail Value $4,275, air fare not included.

Project Corvettes What to Look For
Presented by Chris Petris
Friday 9 AM, Corvette America
Hospitality Tent
Plenty of “good deals” are out
there for someone looking to
put sweat equity into a Corvette
project. Sometimes you will get
lucky and save a lot of money this
way, but there are times when the
20 complete opposite occurs. Chris will
cover the inspection process, the
right questions to ask and how to
interpret any documents that may
come with the deal. This seminar is
not about locating numbers-matching, restorable Corvettes; it is about
making the right choices and saving
money along the way. Bring your
questions so everyone can learn.
Corvette Value Trends

1997-2013 Corvette
Updates and Assistance
Presented by Paul Koerner and
Brittany George
Friday 11 AM & Sat. 8 AM, Corvette
Mechanic Tent
Technology in many forms
command respect in this generation of Corvette. Why is it that some
features work and some don’t? Is it
because we simply need a detail that
is being overlooked? Is it that we just
need more schooling on the systems
and how they work? As technicians
and owners, no one can understand
2015 CORVETTES AT CARLISLE | CarlisleEvents.com
all the technology and how all
the computers interact. Paul and
Brittany will break the information
down into simple terms, show you
what the computers see and help
you understand many of the details
that are overlooked in Stingray.
Question and answer will follow to
address individual concerns.
ZR-1’s 24 Hour
Record Run
Presented by Dave McLellan
Fri. 11:30 AM & Sat. 9 AM, Corvette
America Hospitality Tent
We are delighted to have Dave
McLellan, former Corvette Chief
Engineer, join us again this year!
Before retiring, he had a hand in the
design of the C5. He’s written a book
called “Corvette from the Inside, the
50 Year Development History.”
Join this seminar and hear him
discuss how the Corvette ZR-1 broke
the 24-hour land speed record in
1990, a record that held for nearly 50
years! In the 24 hours of March 1-2,
1990 on the track at Fort Stockton,
TX, the Corvette team set an FIA
World Endurance Record with a
stock ZR-1 traveling 4,221 miles
in 24 hours at an average speed of
175.885 mph. He’ll talk about the
preparation, logistics and what it
was like to drive day and night and
day for 24 hours.
Visit Dave throughout the event
at the ZR-1 Display tent.
Car Care by Meguiars
Fri. & Sat. at Noon, Meguiar’s Display
behind Stage
Our long-time partners at Meguiar’s

Mechanic Tent
Ladies, this seminar is for you! Join
Paul and Brittany for this LADIES
ONLY seminar about any and all
aspects of Corvette. From C4 to
C7, any and all questions will be
answered. Why do we change fluids?
What fluids should be changed? How
do I know I need tires or brakes?
Why does my car make a noise?
My car doesn’t drive like it used to,
why? These may sound like simple
questions but in truth, simple
questions always prevent big repair
bills later on. Let them help you
understand your Corvette in simple
terms and in a calm atmosphere.
They will have a few Corvettes on
hand to show and help you better
understand your Corvette! Question
and answer time will be provided
after the demonstration.
Choosing the Right
Pieces for Your Project
Presented by Chris Petris
Friday 3 PM, Building R
After many years of experience
completing restorations and projects
Chris knows first-hand how difficult
it can be to put together a comprehensive plan. All too often a Corvette
project car is purchased and the
love affair fades quickly as the costs
mount and “gremlins” keep popping
up. Many projects are sold time and
time again for this very reason. He
will cover how to put together a stepby-step plan for the project from
start to finish, what to attack first,
and which parts work in harmony.
He will also discuss when a professional should take over to help save
you money in the long run. Don’t be
afraid to ask questions about your
project or potential project.
The Truth About Oil/
Defending Carburetors
from Ethanol
Presented by Driven Racing Oil
Sat. 4 PM, Building R
This seminar will first focus on oil
with some history, trivia, “Motor Oil
101,” explaining zinc, and a review of
how and why oil specifications have
changed over the years. There will be
a strong emphasis on the changes
to “SM” and “SN” specifications in
2004 and 2010. It will continue with
providing an explanation of ethanol
in today’s fuels and why ethanol
destroys carbureted fuel systems.
After a little background information, you’ll be educated with ways to
prevent damage to your fuel system
along with products to solve these
problems. It will conclude with a
Q&A session for your specific needs.
C2 Knockoff and DirectBolt Knockoff Wheels:
Similarities, Differences
and Installation
Presented by Corvette America
Saturday 9 AM, Building R
Wheels are a big part of what gives
a midyear Corvette its distinctive
look. Corvette America’s Sales and
Technical Advisor, Doug Swoboda,
will discuss the differences between
Original Style Knockoff Wheels and
Direct-Bolt Knockoff Wheels for
1963-1966 Corvettes. For decades,
Corvette America has been an
innovator in the production of both
Knockoff and Direct-Bolt Knockoff
Wheels. A demonstration of how
to properly install the wheels, an
overview of what tools are needed
for the install and a question
and answer period will be some
highlights of this seminar.
Fuel Injection
Troubleshooting
Presented by Chris Petris
Saturday 11 AM, Building R
Chris will begin with the basics of
how the fuel injection system works
including various sensor functions.
Sensor failures and the effect they
have on engine performance will
be covered. Engine scanners are
a must today; he will hook one up
and go over what each parameter
means and what to look for when
engine performance is lackluster.
He will also bring photos and props
to show some of the many things
that are typically found that hurt
performance. Most importantly Chris
will cover what to make note of when
you are trying to diagnose a problem
or explain a problem to a technician.
How to Purchase a
Corvette
By Butch Claar
Friday 1 PM, Corvette America
Hospitality Tent
Butch Claar with Mid America
Motorworks will give you valuable
information to consider and talk
about what to look for when buying
a Corvette.
Transmissions Manual and Automatic
Maintenance and
Troubleshooting
Presented by Chris Petris
Saturday 3 PM, Building R
They work tirelessly for hundreds
of thousands of miles then one
day nothing happens or, worse
yet, they come apart while you are
rolling down the highway. Today’s
transmissions are tough but they do
require maintenance even though
most shops do not recommend
it until failure occurs. Chris will
cover the transmission internals
and what occurs over time that
requires service on a regular basis.
Transmission servicing techniques
will be discussed and questions will
answered about any maladies you
might be experiencing with your
Corvette’s manual or automatic
transmission.

special display: Chip’s Choice Building T
C
hip Miller took great joy in hand-picking cars
for a display he called Chip’s Choice because
they were just that, his choice. His son, Lance, has
been proudly carrying on his dad’s enthusiasm
for this display with a new theme every year.
This year the theme is honoring our heros. The
Corvettes on display are owned by those who
serve or have served in the military, fire or police
departments. With this display, we honor those
who fight for our daily freedoms.
To compliment our salute to heros theme,
there will be an American Flag made of Corvettes
on the hill Friday and a special ceremony at the
stage. Check the schedule and be sure to join us.
Next year’s display will feature Greenwood
Corvettes in honor of customizer John
Greenwood who passed away this year. You’ll get
to see several wide-bodies in this special display.
CHIP’S CHOICE #335
Michael Brown
1963 Corvette
Michael Brown has a Corvette collection so large that
while the majority are stored in his 3,000 square foot
custom-built, climate-controlled garage, some of the
vehicles still have to be stored elsewhere. Michael frequently welcomes Corvette clubs to take tours around his
garage located in the state of Texas. While his vehicles
range in year from 1954-2012, the one that was chosen
for the Chip’s Choice award is a 1963 split window coupe,
his very first Corvette. Michael became infatuated with
this car when he was in high school but never thought he
could actually own one. 22 years later, he purchased the
car and the rest is history.
Ten years after the ’63 Corvette was debuted,
Michael wrote the essay “What Is An American,” (printed
below). Years later, he realized that the theme of his
poem is closely connected to the Corvette hobby. His
essay described the sacrifices U.S. military members
have made throughout history to preserve our freedom.
Anyone who owns a Corvette knows that the car gives
you the feeling of “freedom” on the road.
Listen to Michael Brown recite his essay “What Is An
American” during the Corvette American Flag Presentation on Friday. See the essay on page 29.

CHIP’S CHOICE #336
Doug Robinson • 1965 Corvette
Doug Robinson ordered his 1965 Corvette while deployed
in Vietnam as part of the United States Air Force back in
1964. A USAF aircraft flew him to St. Louis, Missouri to
pick up his new ‘vette from Meyer’s Chevrolet Company
in December of 1964. Doug then drove to his home in
Maryland where both he and the car still reside. The
Corvette has the original paint, chrome, engine, interior,
gauges and both tops.
After his USAF career, Doug became a Honeywell
technical engineer and remained there until his retirement 40 years later. While at Honeywell, Doug was the
Chief Field Service Engineer supporting the Air Force
One aircraft. He also supported all USAF Air Mobility
Command aircrafts.
Both of Doug’s sons followed in his footsteps, as they
are pilots in the Air Force and Army. Doug is still an A&P
certified mechanic and a commercial/instrument rated
pilot. He is also an active member of the Veterans of
Foreign Wars and American Legion organizations.
In his retired years, Doug enjoys working in his automotive business, RaceTech Inc. He builds and modifies
Corvettes, street rods, and other vehicles. Along with the
1965 ‘vette, Doug and his wife own a 40th anniversary
Corvette coupe and a 2004 Corvette convertible. Their
collection also includes antique and vintage vehicles as
well as drag race cars.
CHIP’S CHOICE #337
Cliff Johnson • 1970 Corvette
Cliff Johnson purchased his 1970 Corvette to fulfil his
“bucket list wish” while deployed in 1970. He served in
the Army from 1968-1971, and spent the year of 1970 in
Vietnam. Many military personnel would purchase new
cars through the Post Exchange, unfortunately Corvettes
were not part of this program at the DaNang PX. Cliff’s
father sent him sales brochures from a local dealer near
his hometown in Maryland, and a 1970 ‘vette was ordered
that spring. Cliff returned home for a short time period
and was able to drive the car until he was deployed to
Germany in the fall of 1971. His parents were able to
keep the Corvette while he was stationed overseas.
The car has been a faithful daily driver for
many years and also served as a primary family vehicle,
being named “Old Green Machine” by Cliff’s kids. Snow
tires were mounted on during winter months in Maryland.
The odometer broke 61,000 miles in the early 80’s. The
only major work was an engine rebuild in 1991 due to a
broken timing gear and windshield frame repair. As you
might have guessed, the paint does have a few nicks but
the engine still runs well.
CHIP’S CHOICE #338
Jerry Mackling • 1988 Corvette
Chief. Dennis and his wife had three children who are
also connected to his line of work, as his oldest joined
the same department and is now a paid firefighter. His
next son joined the Marine Corps and trained as an
aircraft crash rescue fire fighter and served several tours
overseas while the youngest child, a daughter, is married
to a marine and living on Camp Lejuene N.C.
Dennis decided to buy his Coupe after retiring from
the fire department, as a Corvette is something he
always wanted to own. Dennis drove the car for a year
and attended car cruises and also came to Corvettes at
Carlisle with it. He decided the car needed to stand out in
the crowd so a few subtle modifications were made.
CHIP’S CHOICE #340
Lou Pittack
2003 Corvette
The 1988 Dark Red Metallic Coupe with a 500 HP 383
stroker engine was featured in the June 2014 issue of
Corvette Magazine has been chosen to be part of the
2015 Chip’s Choice. The owner, Jerry Mackling is an experienced Corvettes at Carlisle patron, making the trip from
Virginia with his son Damon since 2008.
Jerry was in the United States Marine Corps from
1992-1999 and spent his first four years in Okinawa,
Japan and Korea as a Marksmanship Instructor. He
was then assigned to Marine Barracks 8th and I in
Washington D.C. where he was a platoon Sergeant for
a transportation unit that required a lot of time to be
spent in the White House. After leaving the Marine Corps
in November of 1999, Jerry joined the Prince William
County Police Department. He spent three years on a
patrol squad and then joined the Bicycle Unit in 2003
where he worked alongside Narcotics Detectives. In 2007
Jerry was chosen to be a Detective in the department’s
Major Crime Unit where he was assigned to work financial
crimes. In 2014 he was reassigned to another patrol
squad and is currently still assigned there and enjoying it.

With a nickname like Captain America, it is only fitting
to have a Corvette to match. Lou Pittack is a veteran of
the U.S. Air Force and spends his retired days volunteering for various veteran organizations. A veteran in more
ways than one, Lou and his wife have been attending
Corvettes at Carlisle since the very beginning.
The generous couple has escorted the Moving Wall
a number of times, stood watch throughout the night,
participated in welcome home events for our service
members returning after being stationed overseas,
helped out at area veteran homes, escorted Wreaths
across America, and in general have supported the
Veteran population whenever they can.
Lou was given the nickname “Captain America”
while in the service and it stayed with him through the
years. He has always had Corvettes, but Lou now owns
a 2003 Corvette absolutely made for Captain America.
He now shares his love for ‘vettes with his 20 nieces and
nephews, giving them rides and also showing them how
to drive.

2004 Corvette
Mike Skelly is a Police Officer with the U.S. Department
of Veteran Affairs Police Department in Bath, NY and has
a total of 33 years in law enforcement under his belt. He
is also a 25 year veteran of the U.S. Army/Army Reserve
having retired in 2004 at the rank of Major. In 2001 Mike
was in a Civil Affairs Army Reserve unit in Syracuse, NY
when the United States was attacked on September 11th,
and in June of 2002 he was deployed to Afghanistan.
Mike was a team leader for a Special Operations Civil
Affairs Team and supported the Special Forces (Green
Berets) in Civil Military Operations. Mike returned to the
United States in September 2003 after a very successful
deployment. In 2004 after 25 years of service he decided
to retire.
The love affair with Corvettes began when Mike was
only 9 years old after seeing the movie Hot Rods to Hell,
with the 1958 Corvette being the coolest car he had ever
seen. Mike bought his first Corvette in 1995 but not long
after had to get rid of it. After returning from Afghanistan,
Mike and his wife came across a 2004 Corvette with a
custom patriotic paint job. Mike looked at the engine and
saw it had headers, a custom exhaust, cold air induction,
Hurst competition shifter 4:11 gears and a custom trailer
that was an exact replica of the car. Mike knew he had to
have the ‘vette because it represented his service to his
country as an Army officer and to his community as a
police officer.

Dan owns a totally original yellow Z06 with Vietnam

He is proud that the military members who form a bond

Dan has a special message to service members/

under the American flag were achieved from the blood of

CHIP’S CHOICE #343
Jerry Hilbert
2013 Corvette
By Michael Brown
An American is not delineated
by a particular skin color or way
of life. He is a person from many
places with many shades of skin, of
different sizes and varied energies.
He has a Master’s Degree or he may
never have finished high school. He
may drive an expensive automobile
or perhaps he relies on two mules to
carve his living out of the earth. But
regardless of what he is, lacing the
different physical features together
is a bond of strength in tradition
which exemplifies the American
way, a way which opens the doors
of opportunity to all peoples who
may knock upon them. An American
has a spirit which was born when
the bells tolled of independence and
which has released the adrenalin of
his nation time and time again when
its existence was threatened by an
aggressor.
An American does not view
armed conflict as a means of getting
what he wants, but rather as a means
of protecting what he has. He is one
who loves the very concept of peace
for all nations, but will not hesitate
to fight on the shores of others to
protect his own. An American sees
the knowledge of experience in his
past, feels pride in the accomplishments of the present, and has hope
for the future of the world even when
others would view the days to come
with dismay. But a realistic American
finds no guarantee of freedom or
security in the future solely because
he has always had it in the past.
An American recognizes the
faults of his system and seeks to
correct them through a process
unknown to many nations. A process
which does not promise absolute
perfection, but one which allows
for peaceful change, if change is
needed. That process is democracy,
and an American holds that word
so dear that he stands ready at a
moment’s notice to lay down his life
for its perpetuation.
An American finds nothing at all
unusual about getting cold chills
when his flag passes in review, for
his flag has always been a source
of inspiration; when the smoke
cleared over Fort McHenry, when its
sheen was reflected on the sands
of Iwo Jima, and when the colors
glistened on the side of the craft
which took the first man to the
moon. An American sees nothing
strange about getting a lump in his
throat when the National Anthem is
played, or weeping unashamed when
taps is played for one who paid the
ultimate price for his freedom. He
realizes that the only thing that
exceeds that price is the freedom
itself. An American never forgets
the indebtedness he has because
of that sacrifice, for without it, his
freedom would only be an unreachable concept in some philosopher’s
mind.
A true American is the essence
of pride in a way of life. What is an
American you say? He is fortunate.
After college, Jerry joined the Navy Seabees and spent
two tours in Vietnam. His first deployment was from
1966-1967 and his second was from 1967-1968. The
Seabees did construction work for the Third Marine
Division and both of his tours were spent with the Mobile
Construction Battalion 62 as Engineer Aid and Surveyor.
Jerry and his wife Barbara have been coming to
Corvettes of Carlisle since 1991, usually registered in
the Fun Field but have also had four Corvettes displayed
in the NCRS Gallery. Those cars include a 1994 Copper
Metallic coupe, a 1994 Copper Metallic convertible, 2007
Pace Car, and a 1998 Aztec Gold Convertible.
The car of Jerry’s that was chosen for Chips Choice
is a 2013 427 convertible, low production model 1 of
17. Features include exterior code u-28, Inferno Orange,
beige top, 4lt added custom leather wrapped interior,
ebony/cashmere and 3lt equipment group with 6 speed
manual transmission.
Military and Flags of Honor have been
graciously donated by Dan Soldano
and Jerry Hilbert in honor of all
service members, past and present.

1965 World’s Fair
Corvette Display
By Sarah Burkarth, Carlisle Events Social Media Specialist
In 1965, a cut-away Corvette was
featured in the GM Futurama
building at the World’s Fair in
New York and a Mark IV 396/425
cut-away engine was part of the
display.
GM always had two identical and
completely interchangeable displays
at all major shows so that touch
up and maintenance could be done
without having an empty booth.
In 1966 the World’s Fair closed
and GM sent one of the displays
to a car show in South Africa. To
avoid the cost of shipping, GM then
donated it to an engineering college
there at the conclusion of the show.
Students dismantled and reassembled the engine, losing some of
the small parts over the years. The
30 dismantled engine was stored in a
crate until the late 90s when a South
Africa Executive got permission from
the college to ship the display to
Florida.
In 2000 he took the display to the
NCRS Florida Chapter meet. It was
entered into an impromptu auction
and purchased by Al Wiseman of
Tarpon Springs, Florida. He sold the
display for $704,000 at an auction
in 2007, but kept the engine with
plans to restore it. Eventually, he
sold it to Ken Kasyer, former Big
Block Business Team Manager at
the Tonawanda GM plant, who began
restoring it in 2013.
Ken happens to have a family
connection to the engine as his
father was the General Supervisor of

Meanwhile back in Detroit,
the twin of the original Corvette
display remained in storage and was
eventually donated to Ferris State
University’s Plastics Engineering
Program. The body’s whereabouts
remain unknown, however, Curt
Simlik owns the chassis and drive
train from this display. Curt bought
the chassis at an auction in Texas
this past May.
Both Curt and Ken will be displaying these special 1965 World’s Fair
items in Building T. This is the first
time in 50 years that the chassis and
engine have been displayed in the
United States.

50th Anniversary of the

By Sarah Burkarth, Carlisle Events’ Social Media Specialist
S
ome people may remember 1965 as the year
“The Sound of Music” won an Oscar or the year
The Beatles and The Temptations had number one
hits. We remember it as the year that Chevrolet
became the first company to build more than
3 million cars and trucks in a single year and
debuted a now iconic Corvette.
2015 marks the 50th Anniversary of the 1965
Corvette and we have a tent set up with 20 of
these beauties for you to admire. 1965 was a
memorable year for Corvette and the big block
engine, with a production total of 23,562 of which
only 8,186 were coupes. These cars were produced

from August 1964 through August 1965. This
marked the first and last year of the 396 ci-425 hp
engine for the Corvette. It also was the first year
that four-wheel disc brakes were available as
standard equipment.
The colors options for the 1965 Corvette
included Tuxedo Black, Ermine White, Nassau
Blue, Glen Green, Milano Maroon, Silver Pearl,
Rally Red, Goldwood Yellow, and five 1965's had
non-standard paint or primer. Interior styling
showcased newly styled bucket seats and real
leather also became an option.

ears of watching the classic

inspired Mike Persson’s passion
for Corvettes. He attended
the Missouri School of Mines
and Metallurgy (now Missouri
University of Science and
Technology) and earned his
electrical engineering degree.
After that accomplishment,
Mike purchased a 1962 Corvette
with one of his first paychecks.
Soon after, he bought a brandnew 1965 Corvette and used it
for decades to commute to and
from work, haul kids behind

the family boat (bad idea) and
bring home Christmas trees in
the passenger seat. He and his
father even took it on a trip to
California on Route 66.
In 2012, the Corvette was
completely restored. Mike and
his family traveled to Bowling
Green, KY to take delivery of a
1999 magnetic red convertible
Corvette. Later, Mike and one of
his sons duplicated the Route 66
trip in it.
Mike was an active member
of the Raleigh Corvette Club

regularly attended Corvettes at
Carlisle and was excited about
entering his 1965 in the 50th

Although Mike passed away
earlier this year, his sons, Jon,

25th Anniversary of the
ZR-1 Corvette
By ZR-1 Net Registry
This year we are joining the ZR-1
Net Registry in celebrating the 25th
Anniversary of the Corvette ZR-1.
It is also the 10th Anniversary of
the ZR-1 Net Registry, the organization dedicated to “Keep the Legend
Alive.”
The Corvette ZR-1 was introduced to the world as one of the
most technically advanced engines
of its time. It featured a unique
overhead cam engine that was
conceived by management and
engineers at GM and brought to
reality through the combined efforts
of Lotus Engineering in England,
Mercury Marine Manufacturing in
Stillwater, OK and the Chevrolet
Division of GM. Twenty-five years
later, it remains the only production
Corvette model with a dual overhead
cam V-8 engine, the “LT-5,” which
was a distinctly original engine
unique to the fourth generation. This
special Corvette set new standards
in acceleration performance while
meeting federal emission regulations and providing outstanding fuel
economy.
In 1990, the Corvette ZR-1 was
used by a team of eight to break the
24-hour world speed record. The
team included Tommy Morrison,
Scott Allman, Kim Baker, Stu Hayner,
John Heinricy, Don Knowles, Scott
Lagasse and Jim Minneker. The
record of 160.180 mph was set in
July 1940 at Bonneville Salt Flats
by Ab Jenkins and stood for nearly
50 years. Using an unmodified LT-5
engine, the ZR-1 set three FIA World
Records: 5000-kilometers at 175.710
mph, 24-hours at 175.885 and 5000miles at 173.791. In comparison, the
average speed of the winning car in
the 1990 Daytona 500 was 165.761
mph; however, the Corvette ZR-1
ran 10 times the distance at speed
without mechanical failure. This was
an amazing feat for a production
automobile.
The C-4 Corvette ZR-1 was
produced from 1990 through 1995
with 6,922 in total; only 448 were
made in 1993, 1994 and 1995. The
unique features of the Corvette
ZR-1, its amazing history, and
continued interest among automotive enthusiasts make it one of the
most collectible C-4 Corvettes. As
a result, the ZR-1 Net Registry has
been the largest Corvette Club at
Corvettes at Carlisle for three years
running. To learn more about the
Corvette ZR-1 and its unique history,
visit the ZR-1 Net Registry’s website
at www.zr1netregistry.com or stop by
the display in Rows IL and IM. Also,
don’t miss your chance to speak
with Dave McLellan, Corvette’s Chief
Engineer during the development of
the Corvette ZR-1.

scavenger hunt: The Carlisle Quest Friday & Saturday
“The Carlisle Quest” is a documentary about
the journey Carlisle Events’ founder Chip Miller
went on to find the No. 3 Briggs-Cunningham
Corvette. Chip planned for this quest to involve
finding the car, restoring it, and then taking it to
France to celebrate its 50th Anniversary of the
iconic Le Mans race where he would reunite it
with the driver of the car, John Fitch. Devastatingly, Chip died in 2004 and in 2012 Chip’s son,
Lance, completed his father’s quest.
This is where the inspiration and name
originated for this scavenger hunt, The Carlisle
Quest.
Quests are more than just a destination.
They are a journey. Many a Corvette enthusiast
has enjoyed the quest to find their Corvette, like
Chip did. Whether it involves finding, rebuilding,
restoring or returning, a quest can become a
lifelong event.
We invite you to share “The Carlisle Quest”
with someone and experience the thrill of the
hunt and the satisfaction of completing the
journey. Shown here are seven clues (representing seven generations of Corvettes) to
locations on the fairgrounds. Go to each, have
your event guide stamped and at the end you’ll
receive a limited edition Carlisle Quest pin and

A Special Welcome to Charlie Chico!
Once Carlisle regulars, Charlie and his wife Sylvia have returned to Carlisle. They made the trip from
Morgantown, WV in their 1961 Corvette. Charlie is the original owner of the car, and it has never been
restored. Look for the ’61 Vette and ask Charlie about his drag racing days when, he joked, “it never went
fast enough.” Now that he is 77 years old, he says it is plenty fast. Join us in welcoming Charlie and
Sylvia to Corvettes at Carlisle.

Corvettes for Chip
The 9th annual Corvettes for Chip
charity event was founded and
started by a generous group of individuals that were compelled to help
fulfill the mission of the Chip Miller
Charitable Foundation. It’s always
a tight-knit group of passionate
Corvette lovers that enjoy this event
year in and year out. Please to mark
your calendars and plan to attend
this October.
Each year I’m amazed at the
quality of Corvettes that attend this
fun-filled event. The mission of the
CMCF is to empower people with
the knowledge and understanding
of Amyloidosis for earlier detection,
ensuring a better quality of life for
those afflicted with the disease and
to help science find the cures. The
Corvettes for Chip event is a fun
way to help a great cause. Please
consider attending this year.
I hope to see you there!
