1. In the midst of the brutal civil war depicted in Hotel Rwanda, Paul’s friend and co-worker
Dube asks, "Why are people so cruel?" How would you answer him? Why do you think
people are capable of committing such atrocities as those in Rwanda?
2. How is it possible that most people didn't know what was happening in Rwanda? What can
we do today to be made more aware of potentially tragic situations around the world? In
what ways can we be upstanders in our local communities and the world community?
3. Examine Paul’s character and compare it to a person in your community. What is an
example of an upstander in your community and what qualities does he have that make
him one? (Example: Father Pfleger, Reverend Corey Brooks or anyone that you know in
your community that has taken a stand against an injustice)
4. Would you consider Nelson Mandela an upstander? Explain your answer using notes and
researched sources about Nelson Mandela.
