Comparing MAT to GRE®
Scores 2012–13
The many graduate schools and programs that accept either Miller Analogies Test™(MAT)
or Graduate Record Examinations® (GRE) General Test scores as part of their admission
requirements may find it useful to be able to compare scores from these two tests. One
way to make these comparisons is through the psychometric analysis known as linear
equating. This method uses scaled score means and standard deviations to determine
equivalencies between scaled scores from two different tests with similar constructs.
Mean scaled score and standard deviation information published by NCS Pearson,
Inc. in the 2012 edition of the MAT™ Technical Manual (effective January 2013) and by
the Educational Testing Service in the 2012 edition of the GRE® Guide to the Use of
Scores 2012–13 have been used to link MAT and GRE Verbal Reasoning scores. The
reasonableness of this method is based on assumptions of similarity: both the MAT and
the GRE Verbal Reasoning assessment are designed to assess the same cognitive ability
in graduate school applicants, and both measures are similarly related to subsequent
academic success.
Of the GRE General Test subtests, the content included on the GRE Verbal Reasoning
measure is most similar in construct to the analogy items on the MAT (i.e., comprehending, analyzing, evaluating, and making inferences from concepts represented as
words). Because of obvious construct differences, no attempt has been made to compare
MAT scores to either GRE Quantitative Reasoning or GRE Analytic Writing scores.
The tables on the reverse side provide comparable scores for the MAT and the GRE
Verbal Reasoning test. However, because of limitations inherent in any method used
to determine such comparisons, the scores cannot be assumed to be equivalent or
interchangeable. One limitation relates to the different item content and formats included
on the two tests. Another limitation relates to the difference in scaled score ranges for
the MAT (200–600) and the GRE Verbal Reasoning measure (130–170).
Nevertheless, the score comparisons displayed here can be useful in comparing a score
earned on one with a score earned on the other test, which may be helpful in assessing
candidates applying to a graduate program.
