This year St. Mary’s High School is celebrating its 140th year in the Stockton community. We are having a number of activities
celebrating our school’s history.
Beginning on Friday, August 28, we celebrated a school-wide Mass on the exact day St. Mary’s opened in 1876. Bishop
Stephen Blaire was the celebrant for this Opening Mass. With him was Father Richard Morse, O.S.F.S., current pastor of St.
Mary’s of the Annunciation Catholic Church in Oakdale, CA. Father Morse was one of the first Oblates from Toledo, Ohio that
came to St. Mary’s in 1970 and served as the Dean of Boys. Also assisting in the liturgy was Father John George, O.S.F.S.,
who is an Oblate of St. Francis de Sales from India. Father John George has been a member of our staff for three years. Also
in attendance were representatives from the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael - Sister Maureen McInerney, Prioress General,
Sister Gervaise Valpey (’57), Sister Abby Newton and Sister Katherine Hamilton. Sister Gervaise spoke to the students about
her memories as a student at St. Mary’s.
Father John Fallon, O.S.F.S, President Emeritus, gave the students a history of St. Mary’s High School from the beginnings to the current location. In
addition, there were other distinguished guests at this Mass along with members of the Class of 1957 who were the first graduating class at the El Dorado
Street campus.
Other events this year to celebrate our 140 years of Catholic secondary education includes the President’s Club Dinner on November 8, 2015. The special
guest speaker is Pat McCaskey who is a Chicago Bears board member, author of two books and known for his Catholic faith. In addition, St. Mary’s will
have a display at the Haggin Museum on the history of St. Mary’s in Stockton. We are also planning a gala dinner on April 16, 2016, to celebrate this
milestone in our school’s history.
At the Mass, the entire student body including teachers and staff, wore green t-shirts with the words: “WE ARE ST. MARY’S, Celebrating 140 Years of
Milestones and Memories.” What we truly celebrate is the many friendships that individuals have established here as students, and we celebrate the
friends who support our mission. Jesus spoke to us about friendship with four simple words. “I call you friends.” (John 15:15). When He spoke those
words to His apostles - and to all of us - Jesus transformed friendship into something divine. Friendship, from that moment, became an imitation of Christ
and a path to holiness.
Friendship draws us outside ourselves, as we care for our friends’ concerns instead of our own. We give friends our time, help, advice, consolation and,
most importantly, our prayers. With every prayer, then, we draw closer to the Lord and to our friends. St. Francis de Sales said, “Those who are in the world
need friendships in order to secure and assist one another amid the many dangerous passages through which they must pass.” Francis called friendship
“a sacred trust” and described a perfect friendship as one that is good, holy and enduring. Friendship, the very heart of Christian life, helps us grow so
that we are better able to know ourselves. St. Mary’s High School has developed over the years many deep and lasting friendships.
As we continue to celebrate, we are reminded that the main purpose of Catholic education is to prepare students to become responsible citizens in
society. The coming events are also a celebration of our ability to educate and to teach religious truths and practices to our students throughout San
Joaquin County.
Indeed, St. Mary’s High School is celebrating 140 years in Catholic secondary education. More importantly we are celebrating that St. Mary’s High School
is a community based on timeless values. With prayer and the intercession of Mary, our Blessed Mother, and Saint Francis de Sales, we will continue to
celebrate God’s blessing on our school and community for another 140 years.
Respectfully in the Lord,

YOU DO THE MATH – CELEBRATING 140
YEARS IN THE STOCKTON COMMUNITY
Kathy Smith
While much has changed since 1876, the mission of Saint Mary’s High School remains at its core the same dedicated to the academic excellence that prepares each of our students for college and for a life that reflects
Christian principles.
As we celebrate this milestone, it is evident throughout our history, and almost everywhere you turn, 140 is a
significant number. For example, the above mathematical equation from our Math instructor, Mr. Dwight Swanson,
includes the school phone number, the calendar year, the school address, the zip code, the founding year and the
year St. Mary’s moved to our present school site, all of which equals 140. We have even found our place within
social media in that Twitter is allotted 140 characters.
Although twitter is limited to 140 characters, there is no limit to what Saint Mary’s High School can and will do
in the future. For 140 years of milestones and memories, Saint Mary’s High School has flourished on a strong
foundation. We must challenge ourselves if we are going to continue to move forward. To paraphrase the words
of Pope Francis: We must live in the present, and revere tradition, but we need to take the initiative and create the
future. We need to see today’s opportunity fully because it is the only opportunity we are certain of having. We
cannot shrink from change in a fearful way, but we need to drive change with hope and optimism. We must run to
the future, not from it.
Ms. Laura Wilkinson, our Math Department Chair, noticed that 140 equals the sum of the perfect squares of the
first seven integers.
You do the math:
Saint Mary’s High School may not meet the definition of a mathematical “perfect” square, but for our first 140 years,
near perfection is not so bad. The level of success we have achieved would not be possible if it were not for our
dedicated faculty and staff; you, our partners in the community; our committed leadership from Bishop Stephen
Blaire; our administrators and the Board of Directors.
The title of this publication, Traditions says it all. The 140th celebration is a memorable time for our school. Saint
Mary’s High School is built on tradition. We look forward to the next 140 years with great excitement.

Father John P. Fallon, O.S.F.S., Endowment
Your participation ensures our ability to carry on Father Fallon’s wish to empower students with the tools they need
to become the leaders and givers of tomorrow. The income generated from this endowment will provide learning
opportunities inside and outside of the classroom and support dedicated faculty who teach, mentor and inspire
students.
In honor of Father Fallon’s 40 plus years of service to St. Mary’s, we have set forth a long-term plan to ensure the
future stability of the school by creating the Father John P. Fallon, O.S.F.S., Endowment.
The goal is to grow the Endowment large enough so that annual distributions will have a meaningful impact to help
keep tuition low and teachers’ salaries competitive. With sound financial managment and the continued generosity of
our school community, this is achievable. Please contribute to the success of this campaign and make a difference
in the lives of our students. Contact development@saintmaryshighschool.org

class of 2015
“In the future we will encounter many new and exciting changes—
opportunities in which we can influence each other in ways similar to
how we have been influenced. And in looking forward to the many
possibilities we will all have, I repeat what Mr. Morelli says often, that
you are to be who you are and be that well. This classic line which we
know all too well comes from one of Saint Francis de Sales’ letter to
Saint Jane de Chantal, in which he also said, “Let us be what we are
and be that well so that we can bring honor to the Master Craftsman
whose handiwork we are.” He goes onto say that even if we were to
become the most perfect creatures under heaven, what good would
that do us if we were not as God’s will would have us be. So Class of
2015, as you go on to become the next great
faces of the world, let us never forget to go to
Mass, to pray the rosary, and to love God with
all that you are so that you can become the
person whom God created you to be.”
Peter Rainwater
Valedictorian, Class of 2015
“There’s really something about this class of 2015. Throughout my
four years I have always had this thought lingering in my mind. That
the people who I was surrounded by, had a certain kind of spark.
Like many teachers and parents may have realized, we have never
taken no for an answer. We’ve been able to keep high grades and
test scores, while still staying connected with our fellow friends and
families. We’ve been successful on the courts, fields, and tracks,
while still being successful in the classrooms. We have not been
afraid to question the world around us, to question past beliefs and
methods, and to sometimes question authority;
because, by nature, this class of 2015 does
not settle. We go out there and achieve what
we believe must be achieved. And because of
this, I see us all truly becoming a guiding force
in the years to come.”

Excerpt from Fr. Fallon’s letter to St. Mary’s community:
Let me let you in on the story of a startup which did not begin in Silicon Valley but found its roots in the Central Valley…
At its beginning, St. Mary’s High School was very much like the modern-day start up. It had few resources but had the faith to follow through with a dream. That
dream of providing Catholic secondary education to the young people of the San Joaquin began to take shape when the Irish Catholic wife of the founder of the city
of Stockton, Captain Weber, persuaded her husband to donate a tract of land on which St. Mary’s would eventually stand. Another dream shaper was Archbishop
Sadoc Alameny, the first archbishop of San Francisco who persuaded the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael to leave their convent in the temperate climate of Benicia
to make what he called a “little sacrifice” to come to Stockton with its often unbearable heat, to raise funds for the building of the school. The sisters did their
fundraising by horse and buggy.
The first teachers were the Dominican Sisters who have maintained a constant presence even to today. Over these many years, the Dominicans were joined by the
Franciscans, Diocesan Priests, Sisters of the Blessed Virgin Mary and since 1970, the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales. The coming of the Oblates introduced the
school to the spirituality of St. Francis de Sales, one of our current patrons. The Spirituality of St. Francis de Sales has been wholeheartedly embraced by the school
community and it is one of our hallmarks. Our milestones over these 140 years are made up of the memories of people who have been part of us…

BROADCASTING LIVE FROM SMHS
- Karl Winter (’18)
St. Mary’s has debuted a Broadcasting course this year, amid great excitement from participating students
and teachers alike. The Broadcasting 1 class, which fulfills a Fine Arts requirement for the tech-savvy student,
was established by the radical ideas of Mr. Paul Scheet, our AP U.S. History teacher and longtime football
broadcaster for St. Mary’s. Mr. Scheet’s knowledge of the equipment, theories, and behind-the-scenes work
involved with all types of broadcasts and television elements, have proved invaluable to the students, allowing
them to take control of the information and apply it to their video productions.
The Broadcasting course has covered several aspects of television production, including sports coverage,
interviews, sale and production of commercials, and camera terminology. With the wide variety of skills that
have come from the first few months of class, the students have used the hands-on experience for several
projects.
Parker Caston (’16) enjoys the freedom for creativity in the class. He said “I like the fact that it’s a student-run
class where we really get to do things on our own and have hands-on interaction with what goes on behind
the scenes in broadcasting.”
To date, we have produced live productions of all five varsity football games, as well as a volleyball match,
two frosh football games, and the 140th Celebration Mass on smhsramstv.com. One thing the students have
learned quickly is the need for teamwork. Samson Goudreau (’16) said, “The class is very enthusiastic and
creative, and I like how involved everyone is. We all communicate really well to carry out the events.”
Soon the students will be producing personally-created commercials with interviews mixed within the videos.
They are also working on the production of a news magazine show, St. Mary’s Today, to be shown every two
weeks beginning in the second quarter. With an abundance of television equipment and students who now
know how to use it, as well as the burning passion of both the students and adults involved, it certainly looks
like the sky is the limit for the brand-new St. Mary’s Broadcasting course.

iLike my iPad - Caroline Stephens (‘17)
There’s no denying it – iPads are here to stay. From kindergarten through college, teachers are using iPads
to deliver instruction and engage students for learning in the 21st century. The faculty at St. Mary’s has
jumped on this technology wave and uses this new versatile tool to change the way they teach. Some of the
most innovative instructional software is being developed specifically for iPads and with more than 15,000
educational apps available through Apple’s app store, teachers will have no trouble finding material to use
in the classroom.
Our English Department Chair, Mrs. Gillespie, enjoys using her iPad to connect with other teachers and
having limitless resources for engaging and assessing students. “The iPad has allowed me to better attend
to the learning needs of my visual and auditory learners. I can direct them to specific sites that help them
grasp concepts and strengthen skill sets. This intervention is immediate and helps students to understand
that technology is not just for entertainment, but for growth and progress,” said Mrs. Gillespie.
Every student at St. Mary’s is required to purchase an iPad for school. Although this purchase can be
quite expensive for families, the educational benefits outweigh the cost. Students can access information
quickly, cutting down on research time. Mrs. Kozina, our religion teacher, said, “I enjoy being able to have
students get information instantly. No need to wait for answers.” Mrs. Kozina allowed her students to use
the iPad to follow the Pope during his U.S. visit.
For the students, it has been great. The iPad fits our lifestyle. It’s easier to use than the traditional computer
and this new novelty lends itself to our curiousity and more learning. Junior Will Ramirez uses his iPad the
most in Physics. He likes using the tablet to do calculations and take notes. It helps with homework and
checking answers. Will also commented, “I don’t have to go to my locker as much now and I feel more
organized for school.”
Senior Mi’cole Cayton uses her iPad the most in English Literature. “The iPad makes it so much easier to
take your Membean quizzes because you can access the quiz from class and don’t have to worry about
missing the deadline,” said Mi’Cole.
CROP
This summer we have been busy with
the CROP garden. We have provided
Catholic
Charities
with
zucchini,
bottleneck squash, green and yellow
beans,
carrots,
beets,
eggplant,
tomatoes, bell peppers, and persimmons
on a weekly basis. We have had a very
good harvest!
And let’s not forget about our environment. The iPad is a paperless innovation. From homework, tests and
digital textbooks, the iPad eliminates paper, saving dollars and our environment. Don’t believe me? Check
it out, there’s an app for that.

CHOIR-BAND
MURAL
Beginning in late April of this year, students from the
St. Francis de Sales Club initiated an idea to paint
a mural surrounding the Campus Ministry Office.
They took their ideas to art teacher, Mrs. Jean
Aguilar, and soon their wish to honor St. Francis
de Sales in a painting was born. With the help of
Mrs. Aguilar and their club moderators, Mrs. Eileen
Yeager and Mr. Harrison Brehm, a collection of
talented club members and some of Mrs. Aguilar’s
art students banded together through July, logging
in many hours to complete.
Last April, Mr. David Tanner’s music department
took home two Gold Awards at the 2015 Forum
Music Festival. Both the Prima Voce Choir and
Symphonic Band competed and ranked in the
top 10% on a national scale. This spring, Mr.
Tanner looks forward to his students competing
in the Heritage Music Festival in Los Angeles and
the Forum Music Festival in Santa Cruz. Good
luck to our music department!
Seventh and Eighth grade students who are
interested in applying to St. Mary’s are welcome
to spend a day with a freshman student who will
serve as the visitor’s personal guide for the day.

A great time was had by all at the 6th Annual Olive Oil Festival in September. It was a nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon,
tasting olive oils, enjoying good food, sipping wine, listening to live entertainment and celebrating the wonderful agriculture
from the San Joaquin Valley.

Annual Report
2014-2015
St. Mary’s High School has a record of responsible and prudent financial management. We continue to keep tuition increases to a minimum (an
average annual increase of less than 1 percent) while continuing to secure more resources for financial aid in an effort to keep St. Mary’s education
affordable for our families. With the completion of our new Athletic Performance Center, we are looking ahead to future facility improvements
including a new Science Center and needed renovations around campus.
We are grateful for your social, spiritual and financial support of our community.
St. Mary’s High School is blessed with dedicated faculty, staff and administrators who continue to recognize the link between education and future
success. We are proud of our students – what they have accomplished and what they will go on and achieve in life. The generosity of alumni and
friends helps St. Mary’s High School provide an education that is truly superior.

the highest peak in the continental United States. They achieved the 14,505-foot climb in 14-1/2 hours, covering 22 miles. “Mental and

in your daily life. Pushing through obstacles and not listening to what others say.” At 18 years old, Fisher finished 9th in the world championships and also
represented the United States in the Junior World Weightlifting Championships. Lauren is a senior at San Diego State University and joined the Invictus
gym under coach C.J. Martin. Since her move, she has finished ninth overall at the 2014 Nationals and represented the United States in the Junior World

Class of 2013
Grace Cabri visited her brother, Anthony Cabri (’15), at the Air Force Academy.
“My parents and I were there to watch the Acceptance Day Ceremony which marks the end of Basic Training
and the acceptance of the new freshman class into the cadet wing. We were able to talk to him for a few hours,
check out the campus, etc. While we were visiting we stopped at his room to drop off a few things, and as we were
standing there a familiar face happened to walk by. It turns out, Joey Carl (’13) now lives just a few doors down
from Anthony! I couldn’t help but laugh when we found out. It’s too funny to think that the two St. Mary’s kids at the
Academy are now living down the hall from each other!”
Class of 2014 Wesley Thompson made the Dean’s List at Cal Lutheran University.

Tribute Gift.
Memorial Gifts Program
A tribute gift is a special way to honor or remember a loved one. Upon
receipt of your contribution an acknowledgment card will be sent to the
person designated, stating that a donation has been received in their honor.
When you honor the memory of a deceased person, you help a student
who has lost a parent. Memorial gifts may also benefit scholarships and
departments. St. Mary’s living benefactors are remembered at Mass on
the First Friday of each month. The names of the deceased are inscribed
in our In Memoriam book and are remembered in a special Mass on the
third Wednesday of each month in the St. Mary’s Chapel.
