Executives
12/04/2013 02:15 PM
BATON ROUGE – LSU College of Human Sciences & Education alumnus Alonzo Luce was named the 2013 Louisiana Association of
School Executives, or LASE, Superintendent of the Year. Luce will compete for the national superintendent’s award from the American Association of School Administrators in 2014. Luce has made
significant strides in improving student learning within the parish schools through technology and effective instruction. “I am pleased to see that the work our team has done in St. James Parish Schools has been recognized in this award,” said Luce. “I trust
that we are inspiring hope and purpose in students every day.”
Luce received his master of public administration, specialist certificate in educational administration, and Ph.D. in educational administration
and supervision from LSU. He has led 4,000 students and 13 learning sites in St. James Parish School Board as superintendent since July 2007, after a successful
career in the education field as well as simultaneously excelling as an officer in the United States Army.
He received his first instructional assignment by assigning the social studies and computer science teaching position at Istrouma High
School and Technology Magnet in Baton Rouge. He ascended to the position of technology magnet coordinator and eventually assistant
principal of instruction. During his years in Baton Rouge, Luce became known for his expertise of implementing technology into instruction by
helping transition the high school into one of the state’s first technology magnet programs. Luce’s successful tenure at Istrouma ended when he became assistant director and technology coordinator for independent studies at LSU.
He coordinated and participated in development and application of computer based technologies for independent study courses for college,
high school and non-credit students. He spearheaded the technology change that helped LSU sustain their ranking as one of the nation’s
top ten Independent Study programs.
LSU School of Education’s graduate programs in higher education prepare scholar-practitioners for leadership in colleges and universities
as administrators, educators and scholars. Through an examination of higher education theory and practice, the program seeks to help
students understand the diverse nature of higher education institutions and their participants. With this understanding, graduates are
expected to develop individualized styles of leadership that encompass educational excellence, respect for others and contextualized
practices.
The purpose of LASE is to provide strong professional leadership in securing optimal educational opportunities for children; to protect the
interests of education in Louisiana and the nation; and to enhance the effectiveness of the school administrator by providing for his/her
welfare, enforcing the code of ethics as presented by American Association of School Administrators and providing for a systematic sharing
of information and research.
The LSU School of Education offers graduate and undergraduate programs in Curriculum and Instruction and in Educational Leadership,
Research and Counseling. The school’s mission is to prepare P-12 educational professionals to be leaders, practitioners and scholars
knowledgeable in contemporary educational issues. Visit the School of Education at www.lsu.edu/education. Billy Gomila LSU Media Relations
