THE QUEEN’S HEALTH SYSTEMS TO COLLABORATE WITH
THE JOHNS HOPKINS ARMSTRONG INSTITUTE FOR PATIENT
SAFETY AND QUALITY
Queen’s to Work with World Leaders to Improve Patient Safety and
Quality for all of Hawaii
HONOLULU - The Queen’s Health Systems (Queen’s) is working with the Johns
Hopkins Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality (Armstrong Institute) to
improve patient safety and quality for the people of Hawaii.
Officials from the Armstrong Institute and Queen’s are exploring the possibility of a long
term collaboration between their institutions including a potential Quality and Patient
Safety Institute at Queen’s. This new initiative will focus on achieving the highest levels
of patient safety and quality across The Queen’s Health Systems, with The Queen’s
Medical Center serving as the primary Hawaii location for a potential quality and patient
safety institute.
“Patient safety and quality are a national concern, and patients are our highest priority,”
said Art Ushijima, President and CEO of The Queen’s Health Systems. “We look
forward to working with the Armstrong Institute and sharing its approach to addressing
safety and quality with the state of Hawaii.”
The Armstrong Institute is led by Peter Pronovost, M.D., Ph.D., senior vice president for
patient safety and quality at Johns Hopkins Medicine. Under Pronovost’s direction, the
Armstrong Institute aims to reduce preventable harm, improve clinical outcomes and
experiences and reduce waste in health care delivery at Johns Hopkins and around the
world. One of the world’s leading authorities on patient safety, he has been recognized by
numerous national awards, including being named by Time magazine as one of the
world’s 100 “most influential people.”
“Hawaii depends upon Queen’s to provide outstanding, high quality health care. We
believe that by working with Dr. Pronovost and his team of quality and safety experts
from Johns Hopkins, we can further fulfill our mission to provide high quality health care
for Native Hawaiians and all the people of Hawaii,” said Dr. Leslie Chun, Chief Quality
Officer for The Queen’s Medical Center. “At Queen’s, we are committed to continuous
learning so that we always keep improving the care we provide for the benefit of our
community. With this collaboration, we will be working with a world leader in quality
and patient safety.”
The relationship will focus on leadership, governance and accountability, culture, and
robust process improvement to assist in eliminating preventable harm, optimizing patient
outcomes and experience and improving value.
The Armstrong Institute’s work focuses on:
•
•

As part of this collaboration, Queen’s will be hosting a special Queen's Quality Forum
with Pronovost. A national leader in the field, Pronovost will present “Becoming a
National Leader in Patient Safety & Quality: The Armstrong Institute Journey” and will
discuss the national landscape of patient safety and quality, and how Queen’s can move
