I like to go o n trips and do things that are dif­ ferent. For examphe, sea kayaking and hiking. Q: What are your m ain responsi­ bilities a s a security guard? A: Probably to safeguard the safety of students and staff. After the safety aspect, there’s protection of Fisher property and upholding Fisher poli­ cies. My m ain thing first is to make others are safe bn their building or classroom. I take "that fairly seriously. Q: What’s bee® your biggest co n ­ cern? (J: What was y o u r rea so n for changing job hours? A.: Well, I think the thing I m issed m ost from working is that I didn't see m y friends that often. W hen I saw a position open during th e day, m y friends became a motivating factor because I missed spending time with them . I’ve known them fo r approxi­ mately 14 years. Q: What's your favorite movie? A: My favorite movie would proba­ bly be Jaws. I like monster movies and 1think Jaws is a great one. I t hits upon a b asic fear of not knowing what's u n ­ der the water. I think about it every time Igo boat­ ing. I'm not afraid of w hat lurks u n ­ der the water, but it brings up those thoughts. I used to w atch it with my dad while I was growing u p . Q:What influencedyoutobecome a security officer at Fisher? A: Immediately follo-wing High school, I became a personal trainer at YMCA. After that, I had a corvette an d drove co ast to co ast traveling the nation. I s p e n t quite a b it of tim e in Arizona. I helped my ^aunt raise dogs for dog shows. The benefit o f being able to go to school h e r e was o n e benefit. My d ad worked a s Kodiak security for 32 years. I had a n interest to do some­ thing sim ilar t o him, Q: W hat about Fisher attracted you? A: I had a coup le o f friends who* went here w h o toldi me about the job* interview. Q: W hat ad vice do you have for students? A: Use this tim e t o gather varied ex­ periences to Eielp g;uide you tow ards a preferred career. On Thursday, Nov. 20, Colleges Against Cancer (CAC) held a "Great American Smokeout" event in order to raise awareness about the dangers of smoking. "We promote the dangers o f smok­ ing on short-term an d long term health," Christine Coco said. The "Smokeout" is a national cam­ paign against sm oking and second­ hand smoke. It was started by Lynn Smith from Minnesota in 1974, in an effort to prevent smoking. The event itself is an effort for smok­ ers to give up their cigarettes, and to not smoke for the duration of 24 hours. Apparently, this effort is met with some difficulties. However, the smokers who turn in a pack of cigarettes were rewarded. Bri­ an Raymond said that students who turned in a carton of cigarettes would receive a pack of chewing gum. And, smoldng causes esophageaT, kidney, and jpancireatic cancer. In regards- to secondhand smoke, a p am phlet was distributed, with facts such as, "Secondhand smoke causes betw een 35 ,000 and 40,000 deathrs from, heart disease every year," Raymond, also gave some tips fo r how 1o quit smoldng. H e said, "T here are hot lines arrd counseling JavaiTable] through work and hospitals." In an effort to raise awareness about the dangers of smoking, people were asked to write d o w n the nam es o f loved ones rh at w ere lost because o f smoldng hazards. There w ere nam es of aunts, uncles, and grandparents placed on sheets o f pap er, in an attempt to commemorate those who Lost tlreir lives because »of smoking. A: Well, when I originally started the m ost reoccurring issue was underage drinking. There was alcohol poisoning and students passing out, Now, w hen I work during the days, it's m ost often making sure that Fisher is both open and welcoming to th e o p en public. However, it's also en su r­ ing th a t the dorms remain safe from suspicious people.
