WSON first floor commons (1st floor near parking lot entrance to the WSON). You do
not need your nursing uniform for this picture – wear your regular college attire. The
photo helps the faculty get to know you by name, so please be sure to get your picture
taken that day!
Annual Clinical Requirements
1.
Physical Exam & Immunizations
Every student must have documentation of a complete history and physical
exam on file at the college. Use the form sent to you and return directly to the
Wegmans School of Nursing.
Once this requirement has been met, students may complete subsequent
annual health update requirements by completing the Health Update
available online at: http://www.sjfc.edu/dotAsset/080671b8-d576-4688abd9-11f48d75a4b4.pdf
Send forms to Wegmans School of Nursing, Attn: Judy Martz, 3690
East Ave, Rochester, NY 14618 due July 15th. If you have not submitted
this do so as soon as possible! These will be logged in at the WSON and
the health records sent to the SJFC Health and Wellness Center for your
student file.
*KEEP A COPY FOR YOUR OWN RECORDS*.
If your health update, PPD, or CPR card expires mid-semester, you will need to update them
before the start of the next semester. Submit the updated form(s) to Judy Martz at that time.
Also, if you plan on getting a patient care technician job in the next couple of semesters,
employers will require this same information. Save yourself time and make copies of your health
information before submitting.
On your health form…
You must provide proof of immunization against measles, mumps, rubella, hepatitis B, and proof
of an annual PPD. For the PPD you need BOTH the date shot was placed and date shot was
“read.”.
2


If you have a positive PPD, complete the screening questions on the Annual Health
Update and provide documentation of results of a recent chest x-ray.
If you have not received the full course of the hepatitis B vaccine, then proof of the first
administration must be provided or a waiver must be signed. A waiver for the Hepatitis
B series is available on the WSON website. Once the series is complete, submit
verification of the full course of the vaccine.
You are also required to get a seasonal flu shot. Submit the paperwork you receive when the shot
is administered to Judy Martz. For fall start students, you can get this shot when the new vaccine
is available – usually after mid-August. If you get the shot with the serum from last fall, you will
need to get another shot, so wait until mid or late August for this. Only the flu shot
requirement is due by October 1st, all the other compliance requirements are due July 15th.
Students will not be notified of their clinical group assignments until they are in 100%
compliance for clinical to include:
 Health form
 Immunizations
 PPD documentation
 CPR card
All documentation must be submitted to Judy Martz by July 15th. If you have not
submitted this, do so immediately. Once you are in compliance, your name will be added to
the clinical assignments that will be sent via email weekly to your SJFC email account
starting in August.
2. Health Insurance
Our clinical agencies require nursing students to have health insurance coverage to attend
clinical rotations in the hospitals. For students who are not covered under their own or their
parents’ insurance, coverage is available from the college: http://www.sjfc.edu/campusservices/wellness/insurance.dot Plan ahead if you need this coverage when you enroll for
the 2015-2016 academic year. You will be required to sign an attestation that you have health
insurance coverage.
3. CPR Card
Prior to the beginning of each clinical year students must have a current CPR card from either
 American Heart Association (BLS for Health Care Providers)
Or
 American Red Cross (CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers)
 These certifications should be good for two years, but check with the unit providing your training
to be sure.
 WSON and the affiliated clinical sites do not accept cards from other CPR agencies.
Students are expected to show proof of current CPR certification at the beginning of each semester.
This is a responsibility of the student and a requirement of both the Wegmans School of Nursing and
the affiliated clinical sites.
Send a copy of your CPR card to: Judy Martz, Wegmans School of Nursing, St. John Fisher
College, 3690 East Ave, Rochester, NY 14618 due July 15th. If you have not submitted this, do so
immediately.

Getting Organized for the Semester
1. WSON Undergraduate Nursing Student Handbook and Policies
You are responsible for knowing the information and policies articulated in the WSON
Undergraduate Nursing Student Handbook located on our website at
http://www.sjfc.edu/academics/nursing/resources/documents.dot. Review the current Handbook
(2015-2016) prior to starting classes 9/8-the handbook will be posted in August. In Junior 1
orientation you are required to sign an attestation that holds you accountable for the information
and policies in the handbook.
2. St. John Fisher College E-Mail & WSON Mail Folders
Remember to check your SJFC e-mail account and mail folder in the Undergraduate Learning
Resource Center (WSON 208) on a daily basis during the semester. The faculty use these
methods to communicate with students, return papers, assignments, and clinical work.
3. Blackboard – Course Management System
Another important communication link is the course management system known as Blackboard
(Bb). To access Bb you must have an SJFC network account (your email). Check each of your
nursing classes on Bb prior to the beginning of the semester for updates on room
assignments, special schedules, course syllabi, reading assignments, course materials, etc.
During the semester, faculty will post a variety of documents on Bb that you will need:
PowerPoint notes, class outlines, clinical documentation forms as well as reminders for class
preparation. You should check Bb daily for class and clinical announcements and updates.
You are automatically registered in Bb when you register with the College. You are
automatically added to or dropped from Bb courses as your registration status changes. Use the
username and password you use for the Fisher e-mail to login to Bb. Link to Bb by going to the
SJFC portal and click on Bb.
Some faculty make their course “active” in Blackboard a week or two before the semester starts.
Do not panic if a course does not show up on your class list in Bb until the start of the semester.
You should print the course syllabus from Bb and bring it to the first day of class. Get started
on time management and enter your course schedule, assignments, tests, projects, etc. into
your calendar!
4. Turning Point Student Response System - CLICKERS!
The Wegmans School of Nursing (WSON) faculty use "Clickers" (student response system
cards) for interactive exercises in the classroom. Faculty integrate questions in PowerPoint
lecture slides to provide student assessment and opinion polling. Clickers are used by students to
select a response to the question posed on the PowerPoint. Group feedback is instantly collated
and displayed on the PowerPoint slide with graphs.
All undergraduate junior nursing students are required to purchase a clicker (approximately $45)
for use with the Turning Point Student Response System in undergraduate nursing courses.
4
Clickers are available in the SJFC Bookstore (ask specifically for the Response Card RF LCD
clickers for nursing). Older clickers from previous years or from other colleges are not
appropriate. You will need your clicker for all four semesters, so it makes financial sense to
buy one (rather than rent it for one semester at a time).
You will need to register your clicker through Blackboard. How to register your clicker is
explained during your Junior 1 orientation. If you lose a clicker, you are responsible for
purchasing a replacement in the Bookstore.
5. Uniforms
New juniors were sent a mailing regarding uniform purchase. The complete Professional
Appearance Guidelines are available in the WSON Undergraduate Nursing Student Handbook
available at http://www.sjfc.edu/academics/nursing/resources/documents.dot and the guidelines are
included at the end of this newsletter.
Students must purchase the uniform top and pants from Uniform Village in Rochester, NY.
This includes a white top with the Wegmans School of Nursing logo embroidered on the left
sleeve and burgundy colored uniform pants.
Scrub pants, denim, jeans, stretch pants, leggings, sweat pants and shorts are not allowed.
 Clean white or black shoes with adequate support should be part of the uniform. These
shoes should be dedicated for clinical use and not for every day wear. The following
types of shoes are unacceptable: open-toed shoes, sandals, platforms, clogs, Crocs,
canvas or nylon shoes (like Keds). Sneakers are OK if they provide good support – they
should be white (or mostly white) or black (or mostly black) and easily wiped clean if
contaminated with body fluids.
The Wegmans School of Nursing ID consists of a retractable badge holder with alligator clip and
a clear badge holder ($10) where you put your SJFC student ID. This is available for purchase
through Judy Martz in the WSON. The supply will be available in the beginning of August. Your
student ID has your first and last name, your picture, and the word “student” on it, which meets
the ID requirements for the local hospitals. If you are a new “commuter” student, you can get
your picture ID done at Security at any time (they’re in Haffey Hall). If you are a new “resident”
student staying on campus this fall, you’ll need to wait until move-in day and this will be handed
out by Residential Life along with your room keys, etc.
Call the nursing office at 585-385-8241 if you have questions after you read the guidelines!
Required equipment each student needs to start clinical nursing courses:
 stethoscope (Littman or MDF are a good brands; 28 inch tubing; diaphragm & bell
capability or high/low frequency with one head; something in the $60-$80 range is
adequate). Inexpensive stethoscopes make it difficult to hear!
 blood pressure cuff (aneroid gauge; nylon cuff; price range usually $15-$30)
 bandage scissors (4 or 6 inch)
All are available at the SJFC bookstore, online, uniform shops or medical supply vendors.
6. E-Textbooks
Contact the Barnes and Noble bookstore at SJFC for more information on which nursing
textbooks are offered electronically, the benefits, cost, etc. Their phone number is 585-385-8252.

Course Reminders for New Juniors Fall 2015
Early Preparation
Get a head start on medication calculations. In NURS 300 Fundamentals, you will be taking a drug
calculations test; materials to practice are in the NURS 300 Fundamentals text/book package.
 Begin reviewing basic math, including memorizing the basic equivalents in the metric system.
These concepts and others are reviewed prior to the test.
Get a jump on being able to “talk like a nurse” and read medical records by studying medical terminology
before the start of the semester. Buy a copy of a medical terminology textbook (any text will do), or
borrow a text from a library. Concentrate on the prefixes, suffixes and combining forms that are used to
build medical terms.

WSON Professional Development Opportunities
Student Nurses Association
The Wegmans School of Nursing has a Student Nurses Association and all the nursing students (freshmen
through seniors) are encouraged to attend meetings. General business meetings occur approximately
twice a month. Usually the same meeting topic is covered on different days so that those in clinical on
the first day have an opportunity to hear the same content on the second day. Look for posted flyers
announcing the date and time of the meetings.
Nursing Academic Honor Society
Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI), the Honor Society for Nursing, promotes the growth of nursing by
sponsoring education programs, providing grants to researchers, disseminating the results of nursing
research, and providing a forum for discussing nursing practice.
The Delta Sigma Chapter of STTI is the Wegmans School of Nursing’s honor society chapter. Students
who have completed their junior year may be invited to join based on their class rank (usually top third of
the class). Seniors who are invited to join will be inducted in November.
