Part-Time Faculty Employment Information – Fall 2015
Welcome to Bridgewater State University! We are delighted that you will be contributing to the education of
our students, and hope that you enjoy your work on our vibrant and dynamic campus.
The following information pertains to NEW Part-Time Faculty only:
New Hire Paperwork:
If this is your first semester as a Part-Time Faculty member at Bridgewater State University, you must come in person to the Office of
Human Resources on or before your first day of work in order to complete new hire paperwork:

Personal Data form

Form I-9, Employment Eligibility
Proper forms of identification are required; please see page 9 of the Form 1-9 in the New Hire Packet for clarification on
acceptable forms of IDs. If you have any questions, please contact the Office of Human Resources at extension 1324.

Federal & State Tax forms

Direct Deposit
In accordance with State Comptroller policy, direct deposit is the required method of payment. Direct deposit forms can
be obtained online at https://my.bridgew.edu/departments/Payroll/SitePages/Downloadable%20Forms.aspx or in the
Office of Human Resources. Please complete this form and return it to the Payroll Office at your earliest convenience. If
you are new to direct deposit, there is a verification period required to ensure we have received the appropriate
transit/routing and account numbers. In some instances, this verification can take approximately 2-3 weeks, depending on
when it is received. As such, direct deposit of your pay may not be instantaneous and your pay will be in check form until
this verification is complete.
Until the verification process is complete and direct deposit is active, physical checks will be available for pick up in the
Office of Human Resources. Checks will only be given to those who show a valid photo ID. Under no circumstances will
checks be given to anyone without a photo ID. If you would like your initial check(s) mailed to you, please provide Human
Resources with self-addressed stamped envelopes. Payroll admittance advices can be viewed through a secure (encrypted)
internet connection, known as Employee Self Service, at your convenience. Payroll information will typically be available on
Thursday, the day prior to your payday but does not change the availability of funds, which continues to be on Friday. In
addition to payroll advices, Employee Self Service will also display an informational copy of your most recent W2; official
W2’s will continue to be mailed to your home address. Your pay information will not be available on line until you are
entered into the State payroll system as an employee and have received pay through this system. NOTE: your user ID for
Employee Self Service is the 6-digit number (your ID) found in the second row, middle box, of your pay advice. Your initial
password is your 6-digit ID followed by the last 4 digits of your social security number. For more information, please visit
the Office of Human Resources website, https://my.bridgew.edu/departments/HR/SitePages/Home.aspx.

BSU User Account:
A BSU user account grants employees access to campus computers, BSU e-mail, Community Announcements and posting
rights to Student Announcements. E-mail is the official means of communication at Bridgewater State University and, as
such, we strongly encourage all full-time and part-time employees to use your BSU e-mail account. Your BSU e-mail will be
used to provide you with your employment contract, important dates, meetings, deadlines and opportunities available at
BSU.
To open a BSU user account (network and e-mail account), please complete an Information Technology Request Form
available at http://it.bridgew.edu/Support/FacultyGuide/UserAccounts/ISUserAccountForm.cfm. The completed form
should be submitted to your department chair for approval then to the Office of Human Resources.
You may also be interested in creating a Blackboard account. Blackboard provides a secure website to post documents and
communicate with students via the web. To set up a Blackboard account, go to
https://www.bridgew.edu/accountregistration.cfm.
Once an account is created, your department will receive an e-mail with your login information.

Health Insurance for Non-GIC Eligible Employees
BSU part-time faculty and hourly employees are not eligible for health insurance through the Commonwealth of
Massachusetts Group Insurance Commission. Massachusetts residents can shop for health insurance through the
Commonwealth Health Connector and may be eligible for advanced premium federal tax credits and/or state subsidies if
gross family income is at or below 400% Federal Poverty Level. Health Connector enrollment information is available online
at https://www.mahealthconnector.org or by calling 877.623.6765. Non-Massachusetts residents can use the federal
government’s Health Insurance Marketplace at https://www.healthcare.gov/health-insurance-marketplace/ to apply for
coverage, compare options, and enroll.

Mandatory Retirement - OBRA
All part-time employees who are non-benefited must contribute at least 7.5% of their gross compensation per pay period
to the SMART Plan as required by the federal Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (OBRA) administered by Great West.
New Part-Time Faculty must complete the Participant Enrollment Massachusetts Deferred Compensation SMART Plan –
Mandatory OBRA Form and submit it to the Office of Human Resources. Failure to complete and submit the form in a
timely manner may result in the withholdings being deposited in a general account and delay any future withdrawals.
Part-Time Faculty who will not continue teaching at BSU can withdraw the balance from this account after receiving their
final paycheck. Additional information is available from the SMART Plan Service Center at 877.457.1900 or online at
www.mass-smart.com (select Participate, then click OBRA). If you are a returning Part-Time Faculty, you will need to
complete a new OBRA form only if a withdrawal was taken.
Please note you cannot contribute to the OBRA mandatory or OBRA voluntary deferred compensation plan if you are also
an active member or a retiree of the Massachusetts State Retirement Plan or the Massachusetts Optional Retirement
Program. Please see Suzzette Chaves in Human Resources to complete the necessary exemption form.
An employee cannot be placed on the BSU payroll until all paperwork is received and complete.
