Accuplacer® ESL English Placement Test Placement Tests are used to determine if students are ready for college-level coursework. What Can I Expect? What steps do I need to follow? 1. Complete the online application. 2. Write down or print the SIS ID number that is automatically generated after you complete your application. 3. Bring your SIS ID number and a photo ID to your designated testing site. 4. Your results will be given to you when you complete the exam. 5. Meet with your assigned advisor to determine which classes you should take. Three Sections (Twenty questions each): Reading Skills, Sentence Meaning, Language Usage If students score at least 300 out of 360 possible points, they will be required to write a one page writing sample. Speak to your advisor or a Testing Center staff member for the retest policy. How do I study for this test? NVCC uses three Placement Tests: Compass® Eglish Placement Test Accuplacer® ESL English Placement Test Virginia Placement Test for Math Students are required to take either the Compass® English Placement Test or the Accuplacer® ESL English Placement Test, and the Virginia Placement Test for Math. What if my scores are too low? If your scores are low enough that you are not eligible to take college-level classes, NVCC does offer options that will help you to prepare to take college-level classes in the future. Please talk with your advisor. Compass® English Placement Test What Can I Expect? Reading Section: Students will read between three and five passages and answer several multiple choice questions. Proof Reading Section: Students proof read between two and five passages, and correct grammar, punctuation, word usage, and style errors. This test can be taken again after six months. The VPT is an adaptive multiple choice test. A calculator is provided in the test itself. Students are permitted to retest one time within twelve months of their first attempt. Students who enroll in a math class are not allowed to retest. How do I study for this test? Make Sure You Choose These Options: o Institution: VCCS Practice Test Institution o Site: VCCS Practice Test o Site Password: Virginiapt Click ‘Submit’ An email will be sent to the address you used for the Student Registration Form with test login information.
