Hermiston is a diverse community. We are the Gate Way to Eastern Oregon in terms of transportation infrastructure, physical location and a strong history of growth, we continue to see a strong housing market and new construction. Hermiston grew from 16,130 in 2007 to 16,330 in 2008. That is a 3% growth in one year. Hermiston is the fastest-growing city in Eastern Oregon for its size and is 5 minutes from the mighty Columbia River. The Chamber is continuously looking toward the future and our organization strives to take advantage of a strong local and national economy. We are focused on expanding the value we provide to members, as well as enhancing the process of identifying and acting on current and future issues which affect all businesses in the Greater Hermiston area. Central to these goals are the partnerships we facilitate and nurture. Partnerships which encourage the collaboration of business, educators and elected officials to build a common vision of what our community will become in the next decade. This is accomplished by developing partnerships that are results-oriented and which foster regional growth and cooperation. As your Chamber, we make each year a year of innovative growth and development. Without our members’ support, our mission of promotion, economic development and membership services would not be possible. With Warm Regards, Debbie Pedro Executive Director Hello! If you’re one of our newest neighbors, welcome to Hermiston—you’re going to love it here. This Community Guide & Business Directory is provided to give you an introduction to our community. It also serves as a one-stop information source for both new and long-time residents, telling you all about our town, our businesses, our service organizations, the recreation opportunities and other features that make Hermiston a very special community. Hermiston is a strong, vibrant community, and continues to grow. Our mild, “deserty” weather provides lots of sun and blue skies – perfect for enjoying your favorite activities. Our local businesses and industries provide our community a solid economic base. Our school system is, by any definition, the best in our region (as you go about town, note the three new schools being built). We have strong healthcare services (full disclosure: I’m the hospital CEO), and our diverse yet collaborative faith-based community offers a home to everyone. I encourage both businesses and individuals to get involved in our community. There’s something here for everyone. And local businesses couldn’t be better served with Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Debbie Pedro and her dedicated staff. We enjoy life here in Hermiston. Hunters, fishermen and water sports enthusiasts have many options for their favorite pastime. We also support one another through service organizations and participation in civic activities and programs. Put simply, Hermiston is us – it’s you. Our strength is in our people. Your Chamber staff can help you find the program or event you’re looking for. If you’ve lived here awhile and haven’t fully participated in Chamber and community activities, now’s the time. And if you’re just getting settled, then it’s my pleasure to welcome you aboard on behalf of your Greater Hermiston Chamber of Commerce. Dennis Burke President Welcome to our City. We are the fastest-growing city in Eastern Oregon and we are constantly looking for ways to improve our community. Hermiston has the largest school district in Eastern Oregon. In November of 2008, we passed a bond to build replacement schools, a new middle school and two new elementary schools. Currently we are working with Blue Mt. Community College and Eastern Oregon University to build a four-year educational center in 2010 or 2011. This will enable our residents to continue their education locally. It will also give employers an opportunity to further their employee’s education. We are currently in the process of upgrading our waste treatment plant. It will be the state-of-the-art facility and will serve our citizens for the next 50 years. We are also working with an irrigation group to enable our treated water to be used for irrigation of crops. We have numerous parks, which are well maintained with soccer and softball fields in abundance. We have a state-of-the-art pool with zero depth entry to a diving well. There is a spray park nearby. The Columbia River is just miles away for outstanding recreation. Whether it’s bringing in the crops or shopping in Hermiston’s downtown, you are sure to discover why so many people are choosing to call Hermiston home. Hermiston has a growing population that is attracting everyone from young professionals and new families, to energetic baby boomers seeking that ideal location to enjoy the good life. Hermiston’s history is rich and unique as the people who live here. In 2007, Hermiston was recognized for its 100th anniversary. The anniversary celebrated our rich history in agriculture and continuing industry development in the region. Hermiston is the fastest-growing and largest town in Eastern Oregon and has grown to a population of 16,215 as of June 2009. Growth has always been a part of Hermiston’s future and it was by furthering the use of irrigation. The Umatilla River played a huge role in this venture via the development of the Cold Springs reservoir, which is located seven miles northeast of town. Hermiston is known for its role in World War II. The Umatilla Army Depot became the storage place for ammunition, which spurred the economy here at that time. Then the McNary Dam was built on the mighty Columbia River and the completion of Hinkle Rail Terminal came in the 1950s. The products produced in the area could now be shipped via rail, highway or water. It is here in Hermiston that growth and expansion is happening in Eastern Oregon. As a result, businesses and jobs are created in all of our local industries. Whether it is through manufacturing, agriculture, technology, distributing, communications, retail or small business development, Hermiston is sure to be expanding towards a bright future. EVEN A LITTLE EXERCISE IMPROVES HEALTH We now recognize the importance of less intense exercise, which is key for the older, higher-risk population. This form of exercise places less stress on the body, exposing people to a lower risk of exercise induced injuries and heart attacks, yet offers most of the same benefits. Walking is highly recommended since it has been shown that brisk walking causes fewer injuries and has the same aerobic benefits as running if you walk longer and more often. All areas of Hermiston are easily accessible by walking, running or biking. There are sidewalks, trails and bike paths to safely get you to your destination.
