1) What was the significance of the 1852 election?
In the election of 1852, Democrats nominated Franklin Pierce, and Whigs nominated Winfield Scott, and the election was again strongly related to attacking personalities. Pierce won by a landslide of 242 electoral votes to 42.
This election marked the death of the Whig Party.
2)How did the Gold Rush and Mexican War events change the peopling and “Manifest Destiny” of the US?
The victory in the Mexican War and the discovery of gold in
California reinvigorated the spirit of Manifest Destiny.
The Treaty of Wanghia was the first formal agreement between
Chinese and American diplomats. Americans were granted the status of most favored nation and extraterritoriality by the
Chinese, and trade with China blossomed.
Japan was in isolation until 1853, and in 1852 Fillmore dispatched a fleet of warships to Japan.
The signing of the Treaty of Kanagawa in Japan would open trade and break their isolation.
3)Transportation for the growing nation was becoming a major concern. What technological “octopus” was weaving its way across
America?
A transcontinental railroad would seem to be the only solution for the transportation issues
4)Which Act lead to the creation of the modern Republican Party?
What issues in the Kansas-Nebraska Act were of major concern?
The Kansas-Nebraska Act had the territory sliced in two, with
Kansas a slave state and Nebraska a free state. This called for the repeal of the Missouri Compromise. This Act also shattered the
Democratic party, but led to the creation of the Republican party.
