Math 221 Sections 02xx, Spring 2009 – Course Syllabus Instructor: Office: Office hours: Final exam: Dr. Christopher Shaw MATH 2211 Mon 3pm; Thu 11am; also by appt. Thursday, May 14, 1:30 – 3:30pm Email: Phone: Meeting time: Classroom: schris@umd.edu (301) 405-5158 MWF 2:00-2:50pm Jimenez Hall, 0220 Course website: http://www.math.umd.edu/~schris/class Among other things, the course website will contain: • Schedule of material to be covered in each class period; • Homework assignment lists; • Online copies of handouts; • Pertinent departmental links. Required textbook: Calculus & Its Applications, by Goldsten/Lay/Schneider/Asmar (11th edition), available at the University Bookstore, the Maryland Book Exchange, and online. Homework: All of your homework this semester will be done on Webassign. You will need to get a login for Webassign and purchase access in order to complete homework on Webassign. This is a requirement for the course. See the Webassign Directions page for more information. Recitation: You will have a quiz every week (including the first week) in your recitation section, the collection of which will add up to be worth the same as one exam. At least one lowest quiz grade will be dropped. For the rest of the class, your TA will field questions on current topics from the lecture, and will go over problems from the corresponding practice exercises in your textbook. Attached to this syllabus is a schedule of lecture topics, and a corresponding list of appropriate practice problems organized by date. Your TA will not answer questions directly from Webassign in your recitation sections. Exams: There will be three in-class exams and a two-hour cumulative final exam at the end of the semester. Sample exams are at db.math.umd.edu/testbank. Calculators: No calculators will be allowed on exams or quizzes, unless otherwise stated. Grading policy: Webassign Homework Weekly Quizzes 3 in-class exams Final exam TOTAL Absence/Makeups: Any unexcused missed quiz or exam will be given a grade of 0. University rules define “excused absence” to include only illness, mandatory attendance at legal proceedings, religious observance, or participation in University activities. No make-up quizzes will be given (we shall drop at least the lowest grade). Make-up exams will be given only with proper documentation. In the event of illness, you must bring a note from a physician stating that "you were too ill to attend class that day”. (A note showing you were at the Student Health Services is not enough.) For foreseeable absences (e.g. religious observation, jury duty), you must inform me or your TA prior to the exam in order to take a make-up. For participation in a University activity, you must have a signed note from the coach or advisor stating that you must miss class. 100 points 100 points 100 points each 200 points 700 points Math 221 Spring 2009 Sections 02** University of Maryland, College Park The following course schedule is tentative, subject to change as necessary.
