Gilleo Below are the words from the First Amendment that protect freedom of speech and a brief description of the details of a case that went to the Supreme Court. Read both and form your own opinion of whether or not the City of Ladue, Missouri, violated Margaret Gilleo’s right to free speech. Words to Look For Abridge to shorten, to lessen, to cut Respondent the defendant in a civil court proceeding Ordinance a municipal or city statute or law AMENDMENT I Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. City of Ladue v. Margaret P. Gilleo “Respondent Margaret P. Gilleo owns one of the 57 single-family homes in the Willow Hill subdivision of Ladue, Missouri. On December 8, 1990, she placed on her front lawn a 24" x 36" sign printed with the words Say No to War in the Persian Gulf, Call Congress Now!. That sign disappeared. Gilleo put up another but it was knocked to the ground. When Gilleo reported these incidents to the police, they advised her that such signs were prohibited in Ladue. The City Council denied her petition for a variance. Gilleo then filed this action . . . against the City, the Mayor, and members of the City Council, alleging that Ladue’s sign ordinance violated her First Amendment right to free speech.” http://www.socialstudies.com/product.html?record@TF27620 TLC10079 Copyright © Teaching & Learning Company, Carthage, IL 62321-0010 Handout 13 31
