(For more information on the Las Vegas Hilton, visit www.lvhilton.com.) Gaming and good fun Las Vegas is, of course, the home of myriad casinos, but it is also an unrivaled epicenter of entertainment for both grown-ups and kids. Just a few of the attractions include the Fremont Street Experience, a 175,000-square-foot light and sound promenade that runs along four acres of casino-lined downtown street; multiple thrill rides on the top deck of The Stratosphere’s landmark tower; Mandalay Bay’s Shark Reef, which houses more than 1,200 species of aquatic life; the Tropicana’s Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition; Circus Circus’s largest permanent—what else?—circus; Madam Tussaud’s Interactive Wax Museum at The Venetian; and the ASIS DY NAMICS Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat at the Mirage. And don’t forget the shows. Las Vegas boasts Circe Du Soleil’s “O,” “Mystère,” “Zumanity,” “Kà,” and The Beatles-inspired “Love,” as well as the ABBA-inspired “Mama Mia!” Other performances include the Folies Bergere, The Blue Man Group, magicians Penn and Teller, the mesmerizing “Le Rêve,” and many more. M AY/ J U N E 2 0 0 7 Get away Just outside of the city, there’s a magnificent desert waiting to be explored. Aside from the world wonder, the Hoover Dam, vacationing attendees can tour Death Valley, the lowest elevation in the North American continent—280 feet below sea level. In the valley, visitors will find an array of ghost towns and scenic points of interest. In contrast, Mount Charleston, located 35 miles from Las Vegas, rises to a height of 11,918 feet. Among the attractions are hiking trails and horseback riding. Red Rock Canyon, 15 miles west of the city, is a spectacular escarpment produced by a thrust fault. The resulting breathtaking rock formations delight thousands of visitors each year. A little further away is Valley of Fire State Park, which includes hidden canyons, rock formations, petroglyphs, and the ruins of an ancient Native American civilization. While Lake Mead is the most well known of the Las Vegas valley’s recreation areas, those with the urge to be active can arrange bicycling, horseback, and hiking tours through Red Rock Canyon, raft the Colorado River, as well as take advantage of the area’s many fine golf courses. Las Vegas’s new slogan may be “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas,” but attendees of the ASIS International 53rd Annual Seminar and Exhibits will take home a superlative security education, keynote speakers’ food for thought, new and renewed connections to their industry peers, and memories of the sights, sounds, and tastes of a city like no other. ◆ 11 Panoramic photo by Ron Niebrugge; desert photo by Brian Jones A Desert Oasis Stirring Speakers in Las Vegas The ASIS International 53rd Annual Seminar and Exhibits in Las Vegas will feature four distinguished and fascinating speakers who will educate, inspire, and motivate attendees at the special sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday, and the Security Insights program on Thursday. Tom Peters The famous, and infamous, guru of management Tom Peters will be the keynote speaker on Tuesday, September 25. Hailed both as “business’s best friend and worst nightmare” by BusinessWeek, he is the co-author of 1982’s In Search of Excellence—a book named by National Public Radio as one of the top three business books of the 20th century. The primary message of In Search of Excellence was that business problems should be solved with as little business process overhead as possible, and that decision makers at multiple levels should be empowered. The book was the basis for a series of PBS specials featuring Peters, who is renowned as a vibrant onstage personality. His later books were Thriving on Chaos (1987); Liberation Management (1992); The Tom Peters Seminar: Crazy Times Call for Crazy Organizations (1993); The Pursuit of WOW! (1994); The Circle of Innovation: You Can’t Shrink Your Way to Greatness (1997); The Brand You50, The Project50, and The Professional Service Firm50 (1999); and Re-imagine! Business Excellence in a Disruptive Age (2003). Peters’ newest passions are for women as leaders; the supreme role of design in product and service differentiation; the creation of customer experiences that rival a Cirque du Soleil performance; capturing the enormous, underserved market represented by women and aging baby boomers; reimagining education for a Creative Age; and reorienting healthcare from “fix-it-after-the-fact” to wellness and illness prevention. Peters is a native of Baltimore, but a long-time resident of California. He received his Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree in civil engineering from Cornell University, as well as an MBA and Ph.D. from 12 Stanford Business School. He is also a Vietnam War vet who later worked at the Pentagon and in the Nixon White House as a senior Peters Kissinger drug-abuse advisor. From 1974 to 1981, Peters worked as a management consultant at McKinsey & Company, becoming a partner and organization effectiveness practice leader. He then went solo and became an independent consultant. Henry Kissinger Nobel Peace Prize Winner Henry A. Kissinger will speak at the keynote session on Wednesday. Kissinger, who won the Nobel Prize in 1973 for his work in stopping the Vietnam War, served as assistant to the president for national security affairs from 1969 to 1975, and secretary of state from 1973 to January 1977, during the administrations of Richard M. Nixon and Gerald R. Ford. Born in 1923 in Bavaria, Kissinger fled Nazi persecution with his family in 1938 and settled in New York City. He became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1943. During World War II, Kissinger was an interpreter for the 970th Counter Intelligence Corps. After returning home, he earned a B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. from Harvard University, then served as a member of the faculty, being appointed associate director of the Center for International Affairs in 1957 and was director of the Harvard Defense Studies Program between 1958 and 1971. Kissinger brokered the Strategic Arms limitation Treaty and Antiballistic Missile Treaty with the Soviet Union and made secret trips to China seeking a détente between the two nations and the restoration of diplomatic ties after a severance of near 25 years. His involvement in trying to find a negotiated end to the Vietnam War with his Vietnamese counterpart Le Duc Tho, earned them both a Nobel Peace Prize in 1973. In 1983, several years after his tenure as secretary of state ended, Kissinger was appointed by President Ronald Reagan to chair the National Bipartisan Commission on Central America until it ceased operation in January 1985, and from 19841990 he served as a member of the President’s Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board. From 1986-1988 he was a member of the Commission on Integrated Long-Term Strategy of the National Security Council and Defense Department. He is currently a member of the Defense Policy Board. Dr. Kissinger is Chairman of Kissinger Associates, Inc., an international consulting firm. He is also a member of the International Council of J. P. Morgan Chase & Co.; chair of the International Advisory Board of American International Group, Inc.; and a counselor to and trustee of the Center for Strategic and International Studies. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom (the nation’s highest civilian award) in 1977, and the Medal of Liberty in 1986. He has authored multiple books and essays—the latest being Ending the Vietnam War: A History of America’s Involvement in and Extrication from the ASIS DY NAMICS Vietnam War and Crisis: The Anatomy of Two Major Foreign Policy Crises. Michael G. Oxley Thursday’s Security Insights program will feature Michael J. Oxley, a veteran of 25 years in the U.S. Congress (R-OH). A native of Findlay, Ohio, he received his B.A. in 1966 from Miami University—Oxford, Ohio. In 1969, he earned a law degree from the Ohio State University College of Law. From 1969 to 1972, Oxley worked as an FBI special agent and became active in the Ohio Republican Party, serving as a delegate numerous times in the 1970s. He also served in the Ohio House of Representatives from 1972 to 1981 and was elected a U.S. representative in 1981 in a special election. A part of the “Reagan Revolution,” Oxley supported the president’s program to renew the American economy and to restore American influence abroad. He backed efforts to curb excessive government spending, to lower taxes, and to reduce regulatory overkill that had contributed to the sluggish economy. He strongly opposed the nuclear freeze, supported the Strategic Defense Initiative and the MX missile, and backed other defense initiatives. In 1995, after Republicans took control of the House of Representatives, Oxley was named chair of the Energy and Commerce Committee’s Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade, and Hazardous Materials. After the Subcommittee gained jurisdiction over the capital markets, Oxley successfully pressed for stock prices to be quoted in dollars and cents, leaving the fraction system behind and saving investors billions of dollars. He was a conferee on the GrammLeach-Bliley Act—legislation that increased competition and opened up financial services markets. Additionally, Oxley is the author of the Child Online Protection Act (currently under court review) that requires Web sites that distribute legal adult material to verify that customers are over 18 years of age. M AY/ J U N E 2 0 0 7 Oxley Gardner In 2001, Oxley was chosen by the House leadership to chair the new Financial Services Committee. Among the committee’s legislative achievements are the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act, the anti-money laundering provisions of the USA Patriot Act, and the Fact Act that mandated free annual consumer credit reports. Christopher Gardner Thursday’s closing luncheon will feature keynote speaker Christopher Gardner, author of the autobiography The Pursuit of Happyness. Gardner is the owner and CEO of Christopher Gardner International Holdings with offices in New York, Chicago, and San Francisco. Gardner is also a passionate philanthropist committed to many charitable organizations. The Pursuit of Happyness was the New York Times bestseller that inspired the eponymous hit film starring Will Smith. Both book and movie revealed a hardworking and tenacious man, who was left homeless by a series of unfortunate circumstances in the early 1980s while he was the sole guardian of his toddler son. Unwilling to give up Chris, Jr., or his dream of financial independence, Gardner started at the bottom. Without connections or a college degree, he earned a spot in the Dean Witter Reynolds training program—the sole trainee offered a job at Dean Witter Reynolds in 1981. However, Gardner’s meager stipend as a trainee meant he, like so many working poor in America, had a job but couldn’t make ends meet. Gardner’s coworkers never knew he spent his evenings trying to arrange daycare, find food, and a locate a safe place to sleep. After spending nights in a locked bathroom at a Bay Area Rapid Transit station in Oakland, California, he was able to stay at a church shelter. Gardner passed his licensing exam in 1981 on the first try. He spent 1983-1987 at Bear, Stearns & Company, where he became a top earner, and then in 1987, he founded Gardner, Rich & Company, an institutional brokerage firm specializing in the execution of debt, equity, and derivative products transactions for some of the nation’s largest institutions, public pension plans, and unions. The company has expanded into Christopher Gardner International Holdings and now has a business project underway in South Africa. Gardner serves as a board member of the National Fatherhood Initiative, whose mission is to increase the proportion of children growing up with involved, responsible, and committed fathers. Gardner was the recipient of the group’s Father of the Year Award in 2002. Additionally, he is on the board of the National Education Foundation and sponsors two annual awards: the National Education Association’s National Educational Support Personnel Award and the American Federation of Teachers’ Paraprofessionals and School-Related Personnel Award. He is also involved with the Chicago Teachers Union, sponsoring activities and outings for Chicago public school kids. Gardner has also been honored by the Los Angeles Commission on Assaults Against Women with the 25th Annual Humanitarian Award, and by the Continental Africa Chamber of Commerce with the 2006 Friends of Africa Award. A: I’ve always personally believed that security belongs at, or close to, the executive level where issues affecting the safe and secure work environment are given voice. This association also helps the security department plan its emphasis and adjust its expectations according to corporate needs. Such a relationship exists for my department within our corporation, and we reap the benefits. But success requires dynamic executives who are appreciative of security’s role, as well as informed and progressive security professionals. It’s a rare mix. P H O T O S B Y B R I A N PAY N E J UDITH GREEN MATHENY, CPP, is vice president for Lehman Brothers Inc. Corporate Security—central U.S. security manager. She joined the company in 2003 after a 15-year career in corporate security. Prior to that, Matheny served ten years as an FBI special agent, spending most of her law enforcement career as a member of the FBI/NYPD Joint Terrorism Task Force. Matheny says that she was “enticed away” from the FBI by Bankers Trust, Inc. (now Deutsche Bank), where she investigated financial matters around the world before heading west in 1993 as the Western U.S. Civil and Criminal Fraud Coordinator for the Resolution Trust Corporation. Matheny has also served as Criminal Justice Department chair for Remington College and as developer of the security program for a large Colorado-based bank. 14 Q: What was the biggest challenge you’ve faced during your security management career? A: In my current position, I’m pleased to be part of a sophisticated security team where industry trends are embraced, but in the past I’ve been a change-agent who was tasked with establishing a security management presence—selling the need, choosing the appropriate systems and controls for the environment, and continually justifying security’s existence. Having had to roll up my sleeves and dig deeply into security’s many components, I’m now better able to identify with the broad spectrum of security challenges that I encounter on my job, and in my associations with ASIS’s membership. Q: What are the security challenges you face in your workplace today? ASIS DY NAMICS Matheny outside her office in Littleton, Colorado (left) and conversing with a colleague (below). such as biometrics or object tracking video technology should become major themes over the next five years as companies adopt their use. A: I’d say implementing new technology, expanding security’s influence, remaining in sync with our corporate executives, and assisting the corporation in its compliance mission. Security enjoys a recognizable place within our corporation but we’re always challenged to provide a distinct and quantifiable service to the business and employees. I am continually developing this value-added package. Q: What’s the most important security trend right now? A: Beyond the convergence trend that has been greatly discussed, I think we’ll continue to see an increased focus on and awareness of compliance and security’s importance and role in a corporate defense evidencing stewardship. Even in smaller companies, there will be greater pressure to comply and increased scrutiny. Q: What are you the proudest of? A: I think working on the Threat Assessment Response Guideline was my most rewarding experience with ASIS. It was my first opportunity to interface with some of the smartest volunteers available and see how the guideline process works. We also put together a very helpful and professional product. Q: Why are you a volunteer leader? A: About ten years ago, I found myself leading a one-person security operation. I needed the resources, networking, and fellowship that ASIS offered to develop the best program for my employer. Volunteering gives me the chance to return the favor—to develop resources that others can tap and to set the direction for future security professionals. Q: Have you had any mentors during your career or ASIS involvement? A: So many people have been influential in my ASIS experience, but two dynamic women come to mind: Former ASIS President Shirley Pierini, CPP, PCI, and Council Vice President Dr. Kathleen Kiernan. Each of them has inspired, directed, and motivated me at different times to give more toward the greater cause. ASIS Banking and Financial Services Council Member P. Kevin Smith, CPP, was an example to me of professional excellence in financial services. I’m also indebted to the Mile-Hi Chapter for the networking and camaraderie afforded me through the years. Q: Who are you a mentor to? A: I’m always surprised that security management remains a nontraditional career for women, when I see great opportunity, so I look for chances to mentor and inspire those talented women in my sphere toward establishing meaningful professional credentials. I’m also dedicated to developing my security staff toward greater performance and accomplishment. We both benefit from these efforts. ◆ Q: What about developments in new security technology? A: Some technologies that were first considered “new-fangled” are through their beta test and ready for installation. These asset and personal identification technologies M AY/ J U N E 2 0 0 7 15 President’s Reception Chupa’s Night in the Spotlight A SIS INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT STEVE CHUPA, CPP, welcomed guests at the Annual ASIS International President’s Reception at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Arlington, Virginia.
