being the right specifications,”
Rocket said.
“This year we got $92 for
them and on average when we
shore them they cut 3.5kg of
wool for six months of growth,
so on the whole it was a good
result.”
The shearing schedule has the
main mob being shorn at the
end of September-early October
however the wethers are shorn
again a few weeks prior to
going to the abattoir which is
usually mid to early July.
For the main flock the average micron sits at about 20
across 55 bales of wool while
the wether hoggets which are
shorn, again prior to going over
the hooks, most recently
recorded 18.7 micron.
Lambing is in a tight six
weeks from late May through
most of June and Rocket said
they run their breeding program a little differently to others in the area.
“We lamb a little bit later
than some people here,” he said.
“The idea is to push out the
lambing so the lambs are dropping in the middle of seeding
which sounds a bit crazy but
❐ The Roberts run a straight Merino ewe flock of 850 head.
means that we aren’t marking
them during seeding the following year.”
“Another added bonus if the
season permits is that the ewes
are hopefully lambing onto
green feed if we get a good
start.”
Percentages have seen the
Roberts record 96 per cent for
this year’s lambing and while
this is something they keep
their eye on in terms of the
breeding and feeding factors, it
is very much in the hands of the
season.
“I’d say we have averaged
about 90pc over the last 10
years,” Rocket said.
“Feeding wise we do supplement a bit by trail feeding some
lupins if we get really short but
we are mostly pretty reliant on
what is in the paddocks.”
When looking at the livestock to crop ratio the Roberts
are sitting at about 75pc crop to
25pc livestock and at this year’s
seeding they have put in
2400ha of equal quantities of
wheat and barley.
Crops are grazed, not by the
sheep but by a mob of 50
Angus breeders which the
Roberts also incorporate into
their livestock concern.
“We try to use the sheep
sometimes,” Rocket said.
“But we haven’t had much
success with it as the paddocks
are often too big and it’s hard to
get that that short sharp intensity to crash graze an area.
“We have found the cows to
be good in that regard.”
Looking further down the
track, the Roberts are pretty
happy with the size of the various operations they have going
aside from rebuilding their
sheep flock.
They have no plans to make
any major changes and haven’t
been tempted by the prime lamb
market with their sheep operation.
“We had an ‘accidental
experiment’ with some fat
lambs after a rogue prime lamb
sire got in with one of our mobs
and while the lambs looked
good to start with we found it
very hard to finish them without pouring feed and money
down their throats,“ Rocket
said.
“So from that small experience I realised that if we ever
did do something along the fat
lamb lines, we would have to
feedlot to fatten them and for
us that doesn’t really go with
our low maintenance, easy-care
operation.”
“With our seasonal variability we are happy sticking with
our Merino operation and keeping things simple.”

Newdegate's Merino presence
HE Merino presence at this
September’s Newdegate
Machinery Field Days will
be as strong as it has ever been.
The breed has a long association with the event through
the State Merino Ewe Hogget
competition and now through
the increased number of
Merino studs on display.
Following on from the field
day’s 25th silver anniversary
celebrations in 2011, the State
Merino Ewe Hogget competition will continue its popular
commercial reputation of
attracting quality entries from
various sheep growing regions
of WA.
Also as a result of the
increased number of Merino
studs on display at the field
days over the last couple of
years, they now have a permanent new home on the site.
This year will be the second
year the studs will display in
the permanent structure.
The committee decided the
permanent structure was a

cater for them.
Bayer Animal Health is again
continuing to support the
Merino display this year and
has the naming rights to the
shed which is called the Bayer
Avenge Ram Shed.
Bayer Animal Health area
manager Paul Dugan said
Bayer was excited to be
involved in the Merino display
at Newdegate and be the naming rights sponsor of the shed.
“We are excited to be associated with the Merino stud
breeders in WA and the spring
field days correspond with an
important time for Bayer in
terms of the products we provide to the industry,” Mr
Dugan said.
As well as being naming
rights sponsor of the shed,
which has been built adjacent
to the sheep yards, Bayer will
also have representatives on
hand in the shed to discuss
with producers any animal
health and husbandry needs
and also Bayer’s new dipping
product Piranha.
Mr Dugan said he was hoping to have 18 studs in the
shed this year and these would
include: Barloo, Wiringa Park,
Coromandel, Belmont Park,
Penrose, Nepowie, Derella
