t h e re a f t e r, go l f a rc h itect, Tom Bendelow was engaged

m o s t p a r t u n c h a n g e d until 2006. In his day, Tom
B e n d e l ow w a s c o n s idered the nation’s leading golf
co u rs e d e s i gn e r a n d i t s m os t prol i fi c .

Du r i n g h i s 3 5 ye a r career, it is estimated that he
d e s i g n e d m o re t h a n 650 golf courses. He is credited
wi t h b u i l d i n g A m e r i ca’s first 18 hole public golf
c o u r s e , Va n C o u r t l a ndt Park in New York City which
wa s c o m p l e t e d i n 1 899. By 1910, he had star ted
a l m o s t a l l mu n i c i p a l golf courses in New York City
a n d C h i c a go. A f t e r 1920, he became chief designer
fo r t h e C h i c a go - b a s ed American Park Builders
a n d re s i d e d i n t h e s uburb of Austin. In addition to
Nap e r v i l l e C o u n t r y Club’s 18, he is noted for the
d e s i g n o f S t . C h a r l e s Countr y Club, the first two
c o u r s e s o f O ly m p i a Fields (the South Course still
e x i s t s t o d ay ) , a n d M edinah Countr y Club’s
C ou rs e N o. 3 .

I n t h e w i n t e r o f 1 8 68-69, Delcar Sleight purchased
1 3 0 a c re s o f l a n d e ast of Naper ville . The land
s e e m e d p e r fe c t ly f i t for grazing his extensive herds
- ro l l i n g h i l l s , n eve r tilled, with only volunteer
H aw t h o rn t re e s d ot t i ng t he l and s cape . However,
t h e p rev i o u s ow n e r who had homesteaded the land
b e fo re t h e C i v i l Wa r, never drilled a well to water
h i s l i ve s t oc k an d S l e i ght knew t hi s w as a mus t .
I n t h e l a t e s p r i n g o f 1869 he commissioned the
a re a ’s f i n e s t d i v i n e to locate the proper site and the
n e x t d ay h e b e g a n drilling. He ordered a windmill
f ro m C h i c a go a n d by June cattle and goats drank
f rom t h e c o ol w a t e r s pum ped by gent l e breezes .
De l c a r S l e i g h t g r a z ed and watered his herds on the
p rop e r t y u n t i l h i s d eat h i n 1902. Lat er, hi s d aught er,
De l c a r a , re n t e d t h e land to local farmers. The
wi n d m i l l re m a i n e d until 1947 when, deteriorated by
a g e , i t w a s d e e m e d unsafe and was removed, except
fo r t h e p u mp.
T h i r s t y go l fe r s u s e d it as the only source of drinking
wa t e r u n t i l 1 9 7 3 w hen several modern fountains
we re a dd e d t o t h e 3rd, 6th, and 13th tees. The
m e mb e rs o f N ap e r v i l l e C ount r y C l ub m ad e t he
p u m p a p e r m a n e n t club icon in 1986 and although
th e we l l w as s e a l e d i n 1996, t he pum p rem ai ns as
a s y mb ol o f ou r p e aceful pas t or al pas t .

w h i c h t o l a n d t h e i r second shots. A substantial “bull
n o s e ” i n t h e c e n t e r of the putting surface can make
b i r d i e a b i t m o r e e l usive. Westward Ho! is a nice and
e a s y s t a r t t o w h a t will become a progressively more
d i f f i c u l t c h a l l e n g e as the scorecard squares become
f i l le d a l o n g th e w a y.

“ B l i n d B e a u t y ” i s t he hole that underwent the least
a mo u n t o f p l a s t i c s urgery during the renovation
p r o c e s s . A l l o f t h e features on this 384-yard, dogleg
l e f t p a r 4 e x i s t e d b efore. They were just
r e p o s i t i o n e d s l i g h t l y to strengthen the strategic
l i n e s o f p l a y. O n l y a fairly short lay-up or a big blind
bl a s t c a n s u c c e s s f u lly avo id t he se o bst acles.
T h e g r e e n c o m p l e x has always been one of the most
b e a u t i f u l o n t h e p r operty. The downhill approach
s h o t f r a m e d b y m a t ure trees is majestic. A retooled
p u t t i n g s u r f a c e p r o tected by a couple of diagonal
b u n k e r s w i l l l e a v e formerly experienced putters
s c r a t c h i n g t h e i r h e ads. Fortunately, this hole is
mo s tl y a l l b e a u ty a n d very lit t le be ast .

b e e n r e p o s i t i o n e d to wreak havoc and have been
m ad e f u l l y v i s i b l e t o create anxiety. While there are

s k i n n y p o r t i o n o f f airway that works its way between
t h r e e f a i r w a y b u n k ers—two on the left and one on the

the s e r v i c e s of A r t h ur Hi l l s / S t eve Forres t and
A s s o c i a t e s t o ev a l u ate potential changes to the golf
co u rs e t h at wou l d e nhance s t or m w at er m anagem ent
c ap a b i l i t y. A H S F i s recognized as one of the leading
go l f c o u r s e a rc h i t e ctural firms in the world. They
h ave d e s i g n e d m o re than 180 courses worldwide and
re n ov a t e d 1 2 0 m o re . Both Ar thur Hills and Steve
Fo rre s t a re P a s t P residents of the American Society
o f G o l f C o u r s e A rc hitects. Although the storm water
p l a n u l t i m a t e ly a d o pted by the City of Naper ville
d i d n o t i n c o r p o r a t e the NCC proper ty, the seeds of
re n ov a t i on we re p l a nt ed .
I n 2 0 0 3 , t h e c l u b b e gan a comprehensive evaluation
o f t h e go l f c o u r s e a nd clubhouse with a view to
ini t i at e s ome mu c h need ed changes . The obj ect i ve
fo r t h e gol f c o u rs e w as t o i m prove t he s afet y of
t h e d r i v i n g r a n g e , i mprove tee surfaces, add length
t o t h e c o u r s e , a n d address bunker playability and

a s e r i e s o f rev i s i o n s and modifications following
u p on re c o mme n d at i ons from t he m em ber s hi p,
p ro fe s s i o n a l s t a f f , golf industr y exper ts, and from
St eve Fore s t . T h e f i nal m as t er pl an propos ed t he
re ro u t i n g o f 1 3 h o l es and the reconstruction of
a ll g re e n s , t e e s , f a i r ways, and bunkers. The plan
a ls o i n c l u d e d a nu m ber of other improvements
i n c l u d i n g re c o n s t r u cting wetlands with indigenous
p l a n t m a t e r i a l s w h i ch are now called our E SA’sE nv i ron me n t a l ly S e ns at i ve Area.
T h e f i n a l m a s t e r p l a n represented a major
re n ov a t i o n p ro j e c t that made significant
i m p rove m e n t s t o t h e golf course and its
i n f r a s t r u c t u re . I n O ctober 2005, the membership
vot e d t o ap p rove t h e i m pl em ent at i on of t hi s pl an.
C ou rs e c o n s t ru c t i o n offi ci al ly began on July 17,
2 0 0 6 . T h e f ro n t n i n e opened on June 30, 2007, and
th e b a c k n i n e w a s avai l abl e for pl ay on S ept em ber 1,
2 0 0 7 . N C C c e l e b r a ted the official grand opening of
th e n ew c ou rs e on May 3, 2008.
