MAJORS OFFERED:
Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Psychology
Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Biopsychology
Psychology is the scientific study of behavior and mental processes. Psychologists
are concerned with the biological, cognitive, and social factors that influence
how humans and other animals function within their environments. Psychology at
UCSB is a laboratory science that is grounded in experimental research methods and
statistics.
Courses cover the broad areas of perception and performance, cognitive psychology,
biopsychology and neuroscience, social psychology, and developmental psychology.
Students can complete coursework in each of the major areas of psychology and learn psychological
research methods.
The department has its own three-story building with 27,000 square feet of well-equipped laboratory and
instructional space. Resources include an undergraduate computer lab, an undergraduate research laboratory
building, and a state-of-the-art brain imaging center that houses a high magnetic field strength, full-body MRI that is
used for functional brain imaging. Additional facilities include an animal vivarium and extensive computer facilities.
WHAT CAN I DO WITH PSYCHOLOGY?
Undergraduate work in Psychology or Biopsychology offers excellent preparation for careers in fields such as research and lab
assistant/technician, public relations, statistician, product research, marketing and law enforcement. A BA or BS in Psychology
or Biopsychology offers outstanding opportunities for graduate work in any area of the disciplines, as well as medical school,
law school, and clinical or counseling psychology.
