Green Eggs and Ham Resource Pack by Brian Boyd This resource pack is for use with Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss. Green Eggs and Ham is one of the best-selling English language children‟s books of all time. It was first published in 1960. This book is ideal for use with young learners in the EFL classroom. It uses a simple vocabulary of just fifty words, most of which are mono-syllabic. The story is told through fun rhyming dialogue, making it engaging to read aloud, and the lively, quirky characters bring it to life. The resources provided here: 30 small picture/word cards A game board A word search worksheet 12 Flashcards (with labels for the back) Additional resources: You will need a copy of the book, Green Eggs and Ham. You can also find the story as a cartoon on YouTube. Finally, there are suggested plans for two forty-five minute lessons. These have been trialed with several classes of Japanese students, aged nine and ten. I found that even my most difficult classes settled down, enjoyed the story and participated in the supporting activities. Good luck and I hope your students enjoy using these materials. (10 minutes) Filler: Use the flashcards for a team spelling game. www.grammarmancomic.com Lesson 2 Time: 45 minutes Resources: Green Eggs and Ham cartoon, 12 flashcards, picture/word cards and game boards – enough sets for a whole class to play in pairs or small groups. 1. Review the vocabulary using the flashcards, including boarding the spellings of each word. (5-10 minutes) 2. Watch the cartoon. Give the flashcards out to students beforehand. They should hold their flashcard in the air every time it is mentioned in the cartoon. (10 minutes) 3. Give each student one of the small picture/word cards. The students walk around the room, showing other students the picture side of their card. They ask “What‟s this?” … and … “How do you spell it?” Each time students test each other in this way, they should switch cards before moving on to ask other students. (5-10 minutes) 4. Game. Students can play in pairs or small groups. Each group will need a set of 30 picture/word cards, a game board and counters (coins, tiddlywinks, erasers etc). All players start on the house and move around the board. First to reach the green eggs and ham is the winner. Players move in turn by taking a picture card and attempting to spell the word shown. If successful, they can move a number of spaces equivalent to the number of letters in the word. So „boat‟ is worth 4 moves, and „cat‟ is worth 3 moves. (15-20 minutes) Filler: Use some of the vocabulary from the game or book to play hangman. www.grammarmancomic.com
