Graduate Newspaper Fellowship for minorities T he Newhouse Graduate Newspaper Fellowship for Minorities is a highly competitive 18-month program that provides two generous awards each year to minority students who have majored in subjects other than journalism as undergraduates. It is supported by the Newhouse Foundation, a private foundation established by Samuel I. Newhouse. The winners study in the Magazine, Newspaper and Online Journalism master’s program at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. Additionally, students receive professional, on-the-job training. While attending classes, students work as part-time reporting interns at Syracuse Media Group. Syracuse Media Group with two major brands, syracuse.com and The Post-Standard newspaper, provides 24/7 digitally-focused news and information to Central New York. Fellows receive full tuition scholarships, $1,400-per-month stipends, health insurance coverage, up to $1,500 to cover moving expenses to Syracuse, up to $800 for travel to professional conferences and up to $1,000 for books, fees and other academic expenses. Eligibility You must: • Be a U.S. citizen and member of an underrepresented minority group: African American, Asian or Pacific Islander, Hispanic/Latino or Native American. • Have an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university in a field other than journalism. • Have an undergraduate grade point average of B (3.0 on a 4.0 scale) or better. Graduate Newspaper Fellowship for minorities Curriculum Fellows enroll in the Magazine, Newspaper and Online Journalism master’s degree progam beginning in early July. You must submit complete application materials for Syracuse University’s master’s program in Magazine, Newspaper and Online Journalism. In completing the application, you should designate your ethnicity and mention your interest in the Newhouse Fellow Program. Indicate that you will pay your application fee by check or money order. The $45 application fee will be waived for all eligible Newhouse Fellow applicants. A complete application includes the following: - application form - personal statement - resume - three letters of recommendation - transcripts of all previous academic work - official general Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores Spring (6 credits) All application materials must be received no later than Jan. 15. Early submissions are preferred. Summer (6 credits) Applications are first reviewed for admission to the Magazine, Newspaper and Online Journalism master’s program. Competition judges will screen all eligible applications, narrowing the field first to 12 semifinalists. Six finalists will then be selected and brought to Syracuse, with all expenses paid, for personal interviews during a weekend in late March or early April. Finalists must be able to travel to Syracuse for these interviews in order to be considered. COM 698: Media Law NEW 535: Newspaper Practicum—Fellows work as interns 30 hours per week at Syracuse Media Group MNO 631: Journalism Enterprise (capstone) Intern at Syracuse Media Group full time during the second summer session. Fall (6 credits) Two Electives Intern for 20 hours per week at Syracuse Media Group. Fellows are not expected to intern on official Syracuse University holidays or between terms.
