Massenet’s breathtakingly beautiful
Meditation from his opera Thaïs.
We will conclude our season opener
with the New World Symphony, the
symphonic tour de force by Dvor̂ák.

Shostakovich Piano Concerto No. 2

Brahms Symphony No. 4 in E Minor, Op. 98
Here we present some of the most
glorious works in the orchestral canon
from immortal composers. The concert
will open with Mozart’s beloved Overture
from The Magic Flute. Our youth concerto
winner Trevar Fiscus will join us as the
soloist for Shostakovich’s behemoth
Second Piano Concerto. We will conclude
the concert with a work that has never
been performed before by the Juneau
Symphony, Brahms’ rapturous Fourth
Symphony.

We begin this divine
and inspiring program
with the mystical Prayer
of St. Gregory. Then
the mood becomes
somber as we perform
the moving Nimrod
from Elgar’s Enigma
Variations. The somber
mood turns hopeful as we close the first
half with Copland’s famous Variations
on a Shaker Melody. The
second half will feature
the Juneau Symphony
Chorus joined by
acclaimed soloists
Michelle Johnson and
Steven LaBrie as an
immense Juneau Symphony Orchestra
is assembled to play Vaughan Williams’
serene Dona Nobis Pacem.

My inaugural season is filled with “new beginnings”
and will feature monumental works along with
artists of international stature. You won’t want to
miss a moment of this historic season, beginning
with our season opening tour de force concert
featuring Dvor̂ák’s New World Symphony. You will
also hear two works this season that have never
been performed before by the Juneau Symphony,
Brahms’ rapturous Fourth Symphony and Vaughan
Williams’ serene Dona Nobis Pacem, featuring the
Juneau Symphony Chorus. We will close the season
with a special tribute to movie music, playing the
greatest film scores of all time by composers John
Williams, Hans Zimmer, Jerry Goldsmith, and others.

The Juneau Symphony and the Student Symphony will combine
forces to present our Art Excursion for the fourth and fifth graders
throughout the Juneau school district. Our educational programs are
sponsored in part by the Kennedy Center’s Any Given Child initiative and
Carnegie Hall’s Link-Up program. Symphony musicians will also visit
classrooms for interactive music demonstrations. Plus, our Kids2Concerts
program continues to provide free concert tickets to schools in the district,
as well as JAMM and Student Symphony members.
