Music Teacher for Family Center and Lower School, Bank Street School for Children , NYC (Spring 2011) Sabbatical replacement
Taught music to coed classes of 10-24 students from Daycare – Kindergarten. Classes with the Family Center were integrated special education and included classes with children as young as 6 months. Whole and small group in the classroom, half group or whole group in the music room. Teeny Tiny Music. Weekly Singing Assembly with the entire Lower School and Weekly Singing Assembly with the Family
Center. This curriculum was based on singing, building on a varied repertoire of songs. Worked on playing surface rhythms and steady pulses on instruments and also through movement. Explored responding to cadences, tempo changes, and mood changes with their bodies and on various Orff and percussion instruments. Worked on developing inner hearing. Encouraged children to choose songs for the group to play, to orchestrate and to sing along as they played. Children developed their own “sound” as they played and sang and learned to identify “musical” sounds. We prepared five group dances to present on Field Day with the entire Lower School and families.
Movement & P.E. Teacher for Lower & Middle School, Bank Street School for Children , NYC (Fall 2010) Maternity replacement.
Taught creative movement and P.E. to coed classes of 10-16 students from Preschool – 2 nd Grade. Movement: Used combination of live percussion instruments and recorded music, students warmed up with “Brain Dance” concepts. Explored themes like Levels, Speeds,
Shapes, Animal Movements, Self Space/General Space, Stopping & Starting, Mirroring. Classes ended with relaxation activities to slow down our breathing. The objective of the curriculum is to explore movement as an expressive experience. The challenge for all age levels:
“Voices off and bodies on!” P.E.: Although I was hired because of my experience as a dancer, teaching gym at this age level taught me how to work on similar concepts in a different context. The focus was pre-gym sports (dodging/darting/balls/bean bags/paddles/scooters/hoops, etc.), but necessary skills were the same (Coordination, Spatial Awareness, etc.) Bank Street’s unique environment (lab school within teachers college) continues to nurture my development as a teacher.
Flamenco Dance/Singing/Creative Movement, After School & Summer Camp, Bank Street School for Children (2002 to present)
Flamenco Dance, After School, Little Red School House , NYC (since 2008)
Founded two flamenco after school programs. Weekly classes (at two levels at Bank Street) introduce K–5th Grade students the basics of flamenco dance technique: arm and hand movement, feet tapping, hand clapping, turns, marking steps. Classes explore the challenging rhythmic patterns with hand claps and castanets and melodies through singing. Using fun games, theater skits, and movement exercises, children also learn about expression, choreography, good rehearsal technique, theater/dance terms, and Spanish. Students work toward a presentation of a group choreography/song at the end of the semester. The program at Bank Street became very popular, expanding to two levels, to Summer Camp and to Little Red School House.
